saddest thing ever is seeing new 18-22 year olds talk about how Christmas doesn't feel magical anymore during their transition from it being a super special day of the year to kinda just another average day of the year. I remember that feeling well, and I just want to say to those young people specifically: if you want the magic back you have to create it yourself now, the way you want to. it's your magic now
Mary Tudor : The death of her mother
The year 1536 was hardly begun when Mary lost her mother. Katherine of Aragon, who had fought so unflinchingly for herself and her daughter, died at Kimbolton Castle on 7 January. She was fifty years old. Katherine told Ambassador Chapuys wanted to bequeath to Mary her furs and the gold cross she had brought with her from Spain in 1501. Few other possessions remained to her. She had suffered with “pain in her stomach” for several months and had begged Henry to allow Mary to visit her. Yet mother and daughter, separated for four years, were not to be granted the solace of a final meeting.
Four days after Katherine’s death, Lady Shelton went to Mary and “most unceremoniously without the least preparation” told her that her mother was dead. That evening Mary requested that Katherine’s physician and apothecary be allowed to visit her so she might hear of her mother’s final hours and of the manner of her death. Charles V wrote to his wife, the Empress Isabella, that Mary was “inconsolable at the loss she has sustained, especially when she thinks of her father’s past behaviour towards herself, and the little favour she can expect for the future.” Chapuys encouraged Princess Mary to show ‘good heart and constancy … great sense and incomparable virtue and patience’ to bear the loss of ‘such a mother to whom she bore as much love as any daughter ever did to her mother, who was her chief refuge in her troubles’.
In the final inventory of Katherine’s possessions taken after her death, the scribe noted that she bequeathed four small, frayed quilts to her daughter, Mary. These quilts were used by Katherine during the lying-in period of Mary’s birth and were willed to Mary as swaddling for her own children. Katherine does not say why she kept these quilts or what they meant to her. She doesn’t need to. These quilts are deeply emotional objects that convey love and affection and ultimately, sadness, because we know, from our vantage point centuries later, that Mary never had a chance to use them because she never gave birth to a child.

Her idyll, if that was what it was, came to an end in the late spring of 1501. The future princess of Wales had been expected in England eight months earlier (when her husband-to-be turned fourteen), but Isabel procrastinated. An Italian visitor who reached Granada late in 1500 reported that Catherine had been ill, though she was well enough to receive him on New Year’s Day 1501. It still, however, took her several months to set off for England.
Isabel was, perhaps, unwilling to part with her last child. Catherine was younger than her sisters had been when they left. Eight months earlier she and her parents had gathered at the old royal encampment of Santa Fe – near to Granada – to say goodbye to María. The sister she was closest to, the one she had grown up with, went off to marry the king of neighbouring Portugal.
One Spanish chronicler reported that English ambassadors arrived early in 1501 to find out when she would be travelling. It is tempting to think of them being entertained in the luxurious surroundings of Generalife gardens, though there seem to be no other reports confirming either the sending or the reception of an embassy.
This, then, was the charmed world that Catherine left behind. When she finally set off on 21 May 1501, on a long, slow journey northwards towards England, she did so as one of the last princesses of the Alhambra.

They had known each other since Katherine first came to England. Margaret’s late husband, Richard Pole, had been Prince Arthur’s Lord Chamberlain, and she had accompanied him to Wales during the brief five-month marriage of Katherine and her first husband. Royal by birth, Margaret Pole was one of the most important ladies of high rank in the kingdom and one of the last Plantagenets at the Tudor court.
There a bond seems to have been forged between the two women, despite the fact that Katherine spoke little English and was 12 years younger than Margaret. The Spanish princess soon learned that her father had demanded the execution of Margaret’s brother before she arrived in England, and she was horrified. Feelings of guilt over the Earl of Warwick’s unjust execution pushed Katherine to seek Margaret’s friendship. Many years later, Margaret’s son, Reginald Pole, recorded that Katherine was “very much bound to recompense and requite us [the Pole family] for the detriment we had received on her account (although she was not in the least to blame for it), and to show us every kindness, having found by experience that in all her sorrows and afflictions, from no family of the realm had she ever received greater consolation than from ours, although for her sake we had received so many injuries”
Arthur’s premature death at Ludlow parted them, but they continued to correspond until Henry VIII’s accession rescued Katherine from penurious widowhood and made her the queen consort she had always expected to be. Margaret had also known financial distress during this period (her husband died in 1504), but her loyalty and friendship were not forgotten. She came to court with her eldest son to attend Katherine’s coronation and was soon appointed one of the queen’s chief attendants. In 1512, possibly at his wife’s behest, Henry VIII granted Margaret’s petition for restoration of the earldom of Salisbury and she became a countess in her own right.
Katherine chose Margaret to be the governess of her daughter, Princess Mary. Margaret had formed a close bond with Katherine and treated her daughter with the same warmth. Katherine would gladly have seen a marriage between her daughter and her friend’s son Reginald. The Pole family fortunes crashed after Anne Boleyn became the second wife of Henry VIII. Not surprisingly, Margaret had sided with Katherine and Mary during the divorce struggle. Lady Salisbury was known for her devout Roman Catholic beliefs. When Princess Mary was declared a bastard in 1533, Margaret refused to give Mary's gold plate and jewels back to Henry VIII. When Mary's household was broken up at the end of the year, the sixty-year-old Margaret Pole asked to serve Mary at her own cost, but was not permitted. Five years after the death of Katherine of Aragon, Lady Salisbury was executed on the scaffold. Her death is one of the most tragic events in Henry VIII's reign.

Queen Mary was laid to rest on 14 December 1558. In her last will, she requested to be buried with “the virtuous Lady and my most dear and well-beloved mother of happy memory, Queen Katharine”. Katharine of Aragon, dead for twenty-two years, had been buried as the Dowager Princess of Wales at Peterborough Cathedral, and Mary willed that her body should be transferred from thence to Westminster Abbey and “laid near the place of my sepulchre”. She further requested that her executors should see to it that “honourable tombs or monuments” should be erected “for a decent memory of us”. This was not to happen.
