now that this has broken containment i have some things to clarify:

1. this isn't a hypothetical scenario. i searched how to remove the complexity bar in spore, clicked on the first result, and was met with someone condescendingly describing how to use google (no actual answer present in the whole thread). "actually if this happened-" no but it did though. it did actually happen and i was compelled to immediately draw it (losing all desire to actually find out the information i was initially looking for)

2. "just use duckduckgo" i was using duckduckgo. i said it was goople.fart and added in the ads for comedic effect, and bc they might as well be the same bc the problems run deeper than the search engines themselves. duckduckgo isn't a superior search engine, its strength lies in that it doesn't track you the way that google does (and it's not overrun by advertisements)

3. "use marginalia search" have YOU ever used marginalia search??? it's not good for finding the answers to questions. in fact it is not good for finding anything specific at all. it's good for finding random websites when you're bored. it's like, a novelty search engine. i appreciate it's existence but really it's not very helpful in the day-to-day

4. "it's ok you can say reddit" INCORRECT. it was steamcommunity

5. for the record, someone saying "just google it" in a forum setting is different than someone saying "just google it" when you're asking them specifically, like in a social media or blogging context. it's still not particularly helpful, but strangers don't have an obligation to explain things to you (esp when in many cases they would just be the one going on an aggravating goople.fart journey in your stead). the difference with forums is that everyone saying "just google it" is going out of their way to leave unhelpful non-answers on a thread that they easily just could've ignored (plus, when someone makes a post on a forum asking for help, it's safe to assume that they've already been searching for an answer and couldn't come up with one. NOT the case for social media), with the unfortunate side effect that pages like that are the ones that come up when you search for that question

Does this kind of thing happen? Yes, sadly. But to just say that ALL surveys/research about lgbtqia people is either a psyop or a moment of genuine ignorance.

Research matters. And marginalized groups are often underrepresented in research and studies. And this leads to serious problems.

Often, people on tumblr will make fun of studies that say stuff like “trans people are happier when they get access to gender affirming care” or “disabled adults would prefer to decide for themselves when they go to bed”. Sure, it might seem like water is wet type of stuff, but without official research to back up decisions, it’s harder to get policy changes and funding to go along with this stuff. The reason many insurance companies cover gender affirming care is because of the mountains of research to back it up

Is there a dark and horrible history of marginalized communities being exploited in academia and research? Of course. But this is true of medicine as well, and I don’t think any of us want to advocate to refuse to ever see a doctor

As a queer person myself in academia, with a lot of other queer friends in academia, a lot of research these days about queer people is being done by queer researchers. And we’re going to have more difficulties doing the research and work we want to be doing over the next four years, so we really don’t need any more hurdles

If you’re contacted to do research or a survey, just do some basic research. Look up the authors of the study, what institutions they are affiliated with, and what types of review process they went through. Conservatives and Christians can fake and lie a lot, but it’s hard to fake being affiliated with an actual university or research institute, because you can take contact said institute and confirm if the person is affiliated or not

Please, let’s not fall into anti-intellectual bullshit out of fear. It takes only a few minutes to verify that the researcher is legit, and chances are they might be queer themselves

So, I've only just heard about the downfall of shinigami eyes because I have a crap internet connection, but controversially, I will just say

If someone turns out to be a transphobic cunt, I want to find out through my own research and by talking to them. If they've said bad shit but turned over a new leaf, good for them, but that never came through with that fuckin' thing. Plus it gives more of an incentive to avoid people purely because of assumptions, rather than see if those assumptions are falsehoods (or even see if you can change their mind!)
