the phrase "but i didn't mean to!" in the context of causing harm is kind of redundant to me, because almost nobody means to cause harm. most of us just want to do the right thing. and i don't mean that in a wishy-washy "oh, we're all good deep down" way, i mean that even people who regularly do the most heinous shit imaginable will have a way of justifying it to themselves. the world is not populated by hollywood sadists and psychopaths.
actually i have been thinking about this some more and i want to add on to it:
abuse in caregiving professions (like teaching or nursing) is not solely a result of power dynamics. it's also because people who go into those professions often have a idea of themselves as Good People, and are consequently incapable of recognising or acknowledging when they've hurt someone else. instead, they mentally put 'people who have inconvenienced me' into the Bad People box so they can freely abuse them while maintaining their moral high ground.
i read ross greene a lot when i was working with "difficult" or "behaviourally challenged" children. his refrain is "kids do well if they can" - meaning, in short, that most kids act out only when the demands of a situation exceed their capabilities. punishing them for this is not only cruel but also completely pointless, because they also don't want to be doing what they are doing.
a teacher who believes that there are two categories of people - Good People who Mean Well, and Bad People who Cause Problems on Purpose - is not going to see it that way. they're gonna put themselves in the first category, and the misbehaving kid in the second category. and once they have effectively depersoned the child and placed themselves on a pedestal, the world becomes simple again. because abuse is something that only Bad People do.
I told my little nephew that I'd wave at his airplane when it flew over my house today, and he very calmly and politely explained that it wouldn't be possible to see me due to the limitations of human vision. I said he just had to squint real hard, and he took a deep breath and went into the toddler version of "see, what you're not understandingā"

how it is apparently
just watched the invite in theaters. holy shit, itās like the second hand embarrassment is gripping you at the throat and you cannot run away. great movie, hard watch. hilarious movie, hard watch. in a good way, i promise. i went by myself, but laughed through the entire film with three strangers sitting next to me.
PenƩlope Cruz & Olivia Wilde
not enough people are talking about The Invite 2026 on this site. which is insane cause tumblrinas are the people who should be talking about The Invite the most!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spoiler free review of the invite: Olivia Wilde attempts to reclaim her bisexual icon status, Seth Rogen is Llewyn Davis if nothing bad happened to him, Penelope Cruz practices unethical non-monogamy, and Edward Norton speaks bad Spanish. Straight (ish) people are shocked to learn about sexual practices that represent the average gay weekday on fire island. 9/10
trans women:
center yourself in language that includes you. if it includes women like you, it includes you. it's not "them" it's "us". women are your peers. when someone says ladies that means you. keep reminding yourself. don't forget. it is a fact. treat it like one. you HAVE to treat yourself like a woman. keep reminding yourself. keep reminding yourself.
I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.
It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.
since this post was made, Rowling has also made it clear she is very willing to actively sue and dismantle AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL, a global human rights organisation, for correctly labelling JKRās charity and other TERF groups as āanti-rightsā groups
on top of this, she has also publicly shared upskirt photos of a trans woman without the womanās permission, which is genuine, actual sexual harassment, particularly when Rowling has such a large platform
there is no hyperbole in saying that any non-critical engagement with anything Harry Potter goes towards boosting Rowlingās presence and stature, and that any support for the franchise, in any way, goes directly to facilitating exterminationist policy in the UK and elsewhere, the dismantling of international organisations for rightfully calling her and her bigoted followers out on their bigotry, and also to the continued sexual harassment, bullying, and assault of trans women
Elliot Page does not play Achilles in The Odyssey like transphobes were preemptively angry about but Homer just told me he updated the Iliad and Achilles is canonically transgender now and not just subtextually transgender like in the first draft.

ladies⦠has anyone ever told you itās okay to be feminine š©· iām sure no one has ever ever ever reinforced this deeply held secret, thatās itās okay for you to be feminine. š©· i know the world totally tries to tell you that you have to be manly and masculine and grow your body hair and eat as much as you want and get strong and stand up for yourself and make waves and take up space and show your bare face and show your anger. but itās okay to do the exact opposite actually. š©· itās okay to shrink yourself down to the exact same mold every other woman is expected to conform to. š©· did you know that itās okay to be feminine. š©· did you know itās okay to be feminine. š©· did you know itās okay to be feminine. š©· has anyone ever told you itās okay to be feminine. š©· will you be feminine. š©· will you be feminine. š©· will you be feminine. š©· will you just be feminine already. š©·š©·š©·
