The Kings Gambit: Part 1 (Dexter's POV)
Monday Â
The hero training classroom was a cavernous, airless space that felt like that of a cage. I sat at my desk in the middle row, the wood grain smoothed by generations of students who were all, presumably, more interested in their destinies than I was. The professorâmy fatherâwas lecturing us on the âfoundations of heroic presenceâ, whatever that meant. I looked up at some point in the nearly endless lesson and locked eyes on Daring. He was slouched back in his chair, his arms crossed, and his smirk wide. Every once in a while, dad would say something in reference to him and his heroic history. Dad and Daring had a tight bond.Â
Growing up together was anything but similar since dad had picked a favourite from the moment we came into this world. I was used to Daring being praised in class, but I couldn't help but gag every time.Â
Itâs so unfair, I thought, the bitter feeling rising in my throat like bile. I audibly gagged by mistake, thinking everything I did was invisible to others. I almost caught the attention of dad and Daring. Though they didnât seem to notice, a few others in front of me did. Alistair, the new kid from Wonderland, snapped out of his daydream and looked around in pure confusion. I sunk backwards further into my chair, trying to ward off any attention I might have drawn to myself. I tried to pay attention again, but my fathers words began to shapeshift into background static compared to my own thoughts. Suddenly, the blackboard shook with a fist of regal intensity that made my stomach turn.Â
âAnd for this week's assignment,â he began, âyou will be placed in randomly assigned squads, and you will navigate the arenaâs most complex traps. You are to be judged not just on speed, but on how you handle the unexpected. Like a true hero should."Â
He looked at Daring during the end of his speech, making my heart do a slow and painful coil. Just when I thought it couldnât get worse for me, he added the details: the girls from multiple classes would be watchingâ including princessology, damsel in distressing class, and even the grimmnastics classâ as the entire challenge would unfold, and we would be put into predetermined partners. In all honesty, Iâm not even sure who I expected or wanted my partner to be, but I ended up getting Alistair. It was laughable. I didnât know Alistair in the slightest, but just from watching his out of body experiences in class, I figured he wasnât going to be the strongest partner. I knew he wasnât lacking in the brain department, and neither was I; I needed someone with physical strength to be paired with my linguistic strength. I swallowed my putrid sorrows and started gathering my stuff. The bell rang and the entire room erupted into casual chatter and the scraping of chairs against the ground. I left the room along with the band of other boys and made my way to the tech lab.Â
When I opened the door to find circuit breakers switched on and off, buzzing of chargers, and non stop typing, I knew that's where I would find Humphrey. I quickly found his whereabouts: behind the ladder up to the circuits, and sat beside him. I took off my backpack and put my head on the table nearby. Humphrey was used to me coming to the lab every day after hero training â and with that, he was used to seeing me upset.Â
âIt's just not fairâ I started, âI feel like he knows just how to make me suffer and does exactly that. I mean, I know no one expects me to win this thing, but it would be nice to have a new winner for a changeâÂ
âMhmâ
âMaybe Daring could cut me some slack and let me win or something.âÂ
âYeahâÂ
Humphrey's eyes were glued to his screen, but I always knew he was listening to all that I said. Friends like him were rare, yet I felt like he really didnât understand how bad this situation really was. I was used to failing hero training assignments, but this time the girls were going to be watching. It wasn't the girls who concerned me, not really. But there was one girl in particular that I was wanting to talk to from the moment I laid eyes on her. Raven Queen. I knew she had grimnastics the same period I had hero training since there were days where we were outside at the same time and I would stare at her for long periods of time and I figured she was going to be there to watch me fail. I knew I needed to act fast and smart, but training for anything in that class was nearly impossible.
âItâs like he did it on purposeâÂ
âHmm. Thatâs rough, Dexâ
âItâs not just rough, it's humiliating. Iâm going to be the laughing stock by Thursday-âÂ
The door hissed open, and someone walked in. It was Alistair. He looked completely perplexed while holding a small, portable chessboard between his arm and torso and stopped dead in his tracks when he saw us.Â
âOhâ he blinked, âIâm sorry, I thought this place was emptyâÂ
Humphrey looked up from his computer for the first time all afternoon and pointed upwards. High above us, near the ceiling, distinct red and blue cables tangled up was pulsing an angry and erratic hissing, causing the lab's connection to the schoolâs main server to be laggy all day.Â
"Perfect timing," he said, his voice clipped and dry, "I needed someone to climb the maintenance ladder and untangle the cables, since I'm not exactly built for heightsâÂ
Alistair hesitated for a split second, glancing at the top of the lab as if weighing the option of leaving. He then let out a short, quiet breath and set his portable chessboard down on the same table I carelessly dumped my backpack on; he didnât bother with any polite chatter or ask why the schoolâs entire network was hanging by a thread in the middle of a school day. He simply walked over to the ladder, his movements fluid and unbothered; his tall boots clicking against the polished floors. I took my eyes off him for a second to fiddle with his chess board. It was in mint condition, and it reminded me of when I used to beg my dad to play with me to no avail play almost daily with Humphrey before he took on further responsibilities for our school. I looked back and was aghast at his new whereabouts; he was at the top in a matter of seconds, already beginning to get some of the cables free from each other. That was it. Maybe he really did have the physical skills for the tournament and I was just unfairly assuming. I didn't even know the guy, and I still had no idea what the tournament challenges were going to look like, but I figured that maybe we had a chance at cutting it close if he was my partner.Â
Tuesday
After seeing the scene yesterday, we had asked Alistair to join us for lunch before he left the tech lab. I wasnât sure if he would show up, but he ended up turning up with his chessboard and bagged lunch that was strapped around his shoulder. It was just the three of us sitting at that table. Usually, Iâd invite my sister Darling to sit with me and Humprey; but today, I was feeling really anxious about hero training and I didnât want to worry her. Though I was even closer to her than I was with Humphrey, I still felt like I needed to navigate this by myself. Alistair and Humphrey were playing a heated game while eating their lunches; Humphrey was sipping on a green smoothie and Alistair was munching on a celery stick with his free hand.
I was watching, imagining the two of us as the moving chess pieces that needed to take down a piece on Thursday; the king. Or should I say, prince. Though I wasnât playing yet, I held a tight focus on the game, still having the assignment fog up my mind. But then it all melted away and there she was. Raven. She walked into the cafeteria, her hair moving in slow motion in my mind. She moved with haunting grace, her dark hair pooling down her shoulders. Her breathtaking porcelain face held a worried expression. I wanted so badly to wave a hand over and invite her to sit with us. We had become friends in science and sorcery, yet I still felt too awkward to talk to her for real. She was stunning. Breathtaking. Ethereal. Captivating. It was like she was getting more and more magnificent as the days passed by.Â
âYou know, you should just ask her out already,â Humphrey said, interrupting my thoughts.Â
âI know but,â I paused, âitâs not that easy.â
Iâm just a huge mess. Not only was I a nobody now, but after Thursday, I'll be the laughing stalk of the entire school. Raven, Daring, and even my dad were going to watch me go down. I should just enjoy the invisibility while I still have it. There could only be one winner after all, but I couldnât afford another blow to my grade. Even though Iâm decently passing, I donât think dad is very impressed; though I doubt he cares.Â
âI wish we could do something to win that thing. Or at least be able to impress my dad with skills that I don't have.â
âLets just cheat then,â Alistair smiled without looking up from the game
Though he was joking, I think Humphrey had an idea from the look on his face. He stopped sipping, looked up and blinked at me with a tugging smile on his face. I didnât like what he was coming up with. I knew there was no getting around my dadâs assignments; I tried that before. Iâve tried playing sick and injured, Iâve tried running away and hiding in the bathrooms. Nothing worked. Besides, we didnât even know what the challenges were yet; how on earth would we be able to find a way to cheat?Â
âMaybe not cheat⌠butâ he paused, âsabotage?âÂ
âSabotage? Sabotage who?âÂ
âDaringâ they said in syncÂ
