“Not drugs” he shook his head, but didn’t provide any further explanation to what he meant. “Oh you must be making it for Suri. She’s been working overnight shifts over at the bakery. She does have a more fresh smell to her.”

text to helena: i made a whole batch for someone and they went and died before I got the second part of the payment and now his wife is refusing to pay because she’s all ‘distraught’ or some shit.

“Judah” he repeated his name as he took his hand to give it a shake, “you work over at the paper, don’t you? I’ve seen you working some of the town’s events.” he pulled his hand back to rest by his side. “You can call me Everett”

Even with his sire saying not to worry Edgar felt his entire body tense.  Everything about the hybrid screamed danger, and he felt like an idiot for not noticing it sooner.  “You killed me Everett,” he seethed.  “And for reasons I can’t even fathom.  So yes, pardon me for having a few ideas.”

“Clearly it didn’t stick since you’re here.” he gestured to the other man. “Think of all the people you wouldn’t have met or been with if it wasn’t for me. If anything you should be thanking me. I accidentally gave you a longer life than you were going to have. I could still kill you now, if I wanted to, but I have no interest in doing that. It’d feel like killing a part of myself in a way, and I’m too much of a narcissist to do that.”

“A good time? What do you mean by that?” All of her work had been grim when she thought about it. Suppressants, mood regulators, synthetic fear. Then again she was use to playing with the things people were too scared to go to their coven about. “I finished it. Managed to make up a batch that would last him a year so he’s gone out of town for a while.”

“Oh you know people looking for ways to loosen up, feel like they don’t have any troubles for a couple hours. Free themselves of their inhibitions.” Some had requested specific things, while others had left it vague. “Are you working on anything now?”

“Oh well…. Um, I guess not.” The redhead shrugged, still confused at why Everett was sending her away. But the extra cash would definitely be useful. Having to start a whole new life, with no savings, no skill she could really use… it had been hard. Of course, Briana had helped her, and for that Suri was grateful, but the vampire couldn’t be ungrateful for a little extra savings. “Did you want me to finish this shift?” She still had at least an hour left.

"Yeah that’s fine.” the heretic nodded, “I need to go next door to take care of a few things. make me an earl grey with two of the honey sticks for when I get back.”  he said before disappearing to the back for a moment to grab one of the boxes from one of the refrigerators.

Lizzie took a moment to think before nodding.  “Yeah, lots of shit to be mad at.”  She scuffed the toe of her shoe into the ground.  “Oh, you know, pretty much everyone.  Especially humans.  They think it’s okay to treat people like shit just because you’re different.  Asshole adults too.  They should pay.”

“Ah humans, so...opinionated and yet so killable. They definitely aren’t as fun as some of the others. No real challenge to it.” he eyed her for a moment, “You’re an adult.” he pointed out to her, rolling his eyes a little at her comment about asshole adults. “So really, it’s just assholes who should pay. Not just the adults, asshole children aren’t worth much either, and they do tend to have a sweeter taste to them, so in that way, I guess they’re at least worth a little something.”

“I suppose that’s true.” Everett had spent quite a while in the beginning teaching Suri what needed to be done, how to bake most of the things they sold. And sure, it wasn’t the job she’d dreamed of doing, but she took pride it in regardless. She wanted to make Everett glad that he’d hired her. “I don’t mind the night shift.” Without a daylight amulet, it worked just fine for her at the moment.

“That’s good to hear.” Everett nodded, not actually caring if she didn’t mind the night shift or not, just able to play off like he did. “So, is there anything I can do for you while I’m still in?”

“How’s business on your end? I’ve been seeing an up tick recently, especially in people wanting revenge.” It was important to Helena to keep good working relationships with others that were in a similar market to her. She had been to Everett before about poison and had since returned a few times to inquire about other things. She had decided he was an odd man. “I almost long for the days where the only think I had to worry about was synthetic fear.” @everettbriggs·

“Ah, yes, revenge.” Everett smirked, “revenge does always seem to fuel sales better than most things. I’ve seen a slight up tick, myself. Have had a few more people looking for a good time rather than revenge though.” those never seemed quite as fun to him, but if it was in demand he would supply. “How’s that coming along?” Last he knew she’d still been working on it.

Suri nodded softly when he assured her that there was nothing that he needed. She’d have to take his word for that. “Oh, no, I’m fine.” She promised, shaking her head at the offer. Briana helped her get food when she needed it, though Suri usually stuck to the synthetic stuff. “It was fine. I think I’m finally becoming a real baker.” She mused, somewhat ruefully. It was not the career she’d been planning on, but she was grateful for the job all the same.

“Well, as long as it tastes good. That’s all that matters, right?” Everett  gave the top of the display case a little rhythmic tap. “I’d hate to have to fire you after all. Plus, it’s nice not having to be the one to come in over night to bake all the time.”

Judah had never been mind-controlled before; he didn’t know how to defend against it. He stiffened as he felt his body move against his own intentions, setting the man down. He blinked, shaking his head as his mind grew foggy. Rubbing his forehead, he turned around to look back at Everett. “Sorry … what was I doing?”

“You mentioned something about being out to get some air.” Everett told him, knowing that the other would have no reason, now, to question him. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”

His abrupt answer caught her off-guard. Everett could be aloof, sure, but there seemed like there was more to this. She almost wanted to ask more, if anything was wrong, if he needed help, but then he told her not to question him. Her face fell slightly, Suri feeling a little like a scolded child, shifting from foot to foot. “Sorry.” She murmured, quietly taking the money he offered. It was a lot, and it only made her more worried about what was going on, but she didn’t want to piss him off. “Is–is there anything else you need?”

“Need? No” he shook his head as he slipped from behind the counter again “how was the overnight? you’re not in need of anything to keep in the employee fridge are you?” he asked, usually keeping some blood stocked for himself when he wanted some and there wasn’t a warm body around to compel for a taste.

“Yes” he said as he punched in some buttons on the till to get the cash drawer to open. It was the only answer he was going to give her, because honestly all she needed to know was that yes, he had a reason. What that reason was didn’t concern her. “Here” he said holding out two hundred in various bills. “Now, don’t question why I do something again, okay?”

It was nearly sunrise, Suri having been at the bakery since midnight. If you’d told her a few years ago that she’d be working in a bakery, she would have laughed. She’d been on track to be a psychologist, having already picked out the facility she wanted to work at. But no. Here she was, doing what she had to to get by. She heard the door, a somewhat weak smile touching her lips. “Morning.” So her lustre was a bit lacking this morning. “What can I get you?”

“Morning” Everett responded as he came in, ignoring the second part as he made his way behind the counter. He wasn’t working today, but he did need to pick something up. Something that was kept behind the counter in a spot only he had the key for. “I’m going to need you to take tonight off” he said as he collected the bag from inside the space before securing it shut again.

“Hey, Professor.” Everett smiled, spotting the other man on the campus grounds, “don’t worry, I’m not here to bite you, I’m just here to talk. You seem to have some ideas in your head about me, don’t you? I won’t lie some are probably true.”

“What the hell, man? Was that necessary?” Judah asked in dismay as he was handed his dead phone back. He sighed, slipping his phone back into his pocket and looking over at the man slumped over the bench with a faint frown. Shaking his head, he moved over to him, struggling to lift him up, deciding he’d just take him to the hospital himself.

Was it necessary? Probably not, but Everett wasn’t thinking about what was or wasn’t necessary. The heretic watched for another moment as the other attempted to lift the unconscious man up from the bench. “This is just getting ridiculous” he let out a sigh, shaking his head at him. Annoyed he reached out, touching the other and saying something to get him to look at him. “Put him down.” he told him, knowing that it wouldn’t be as simple as compelling a human, but having a feeling that the young witch wouldn’t be as difficult to compel as many others of his kind that he’d come across over the years. “You’re going to forget that this man is even here.”
