i’m in a history of animation class this semester, and this week, we ended up digging into s.leeping beauty. i got to watch it in class, and write up a response on some of the themes. i chose to write about how fate plays a part in the narrative, and the way it affects the characters

...unsurprisingly, I now have INCREDIBLY high for audrey, who is crying in my head because of how much she believed in fate and true love, and got LET DOWN

  "yeah?" ben stood frozen in his spot, afraid of what might happen if he dared to move a muscle. the king could handle audrey, he thought. he was used to her outbursts. but this-- this was a lot more than an outburst. "i get that, auds. i do. you're heartbroken and you have a lot of pressure on you. but this isn't how you get what you want. this isn't you."

Her head tilts, as she stares directly at Ben from where she’s standing in front of his own throne. “Maybe I want this to be me,” She counters, walking down the steps, and carrying the scepter with her. 

“And last I checked, Benny-Boo, you’re in no position to be telling me who I am, or what I want. Frankly, you’re lucky that I talked Chad out of ending your life. He was really upset with you too,” She figured that she would mention, stepping closer to him, and then gently flicking some hair away from his forehead. “Some gratitude would be nice...”

          “ LOVE THE DRESS. ” she hates the dress, actually. it’s her number one competitor, and of course auroria’s princess would choose his work. the worst part is that the royal is stunning in it— enough that it nips at her own insecurities, makes her feel LESS BEAUTIFUL in comparison. why did audrey always have to be everything she tried so hard to seem like. “it’s been ages, auds, we should catch up? tell me, how has it been? you know— readjusting.”

“Oh, this thing?” She finds herself twirling to show off the dress, pink silk splaying outwards by her ankles. “It’s an oldie, but a goodie. I didn’t have much time to shop around for something new, so I didn’t have much of a choice but to recycle this one from last spring.”

Audrey feels beautiful in it, but it doesn’t matter. It’s not new, and it’s all the press could take note of when she arrived earlier this evening. Great.

“But, readjusting has been... something,” She smiles, just a little too sweetly. “I mean, so much has changed around our little school since I’ve been gone. It’s just... wow.”

It was hard to find something nice to say when it was clear that there just wasn’t room for her anymore at Auradon Prep--not as Ben’s girlfriend, not as head cheerleader, and even the student council had planned this whole ball out without any input from her. She wasn’t used to being so out of the loop with her own community...

“But you? You seem to be fitting right in!”

   “no–” a shaky breath escaped the prince as he swatted away audrey’s hand. blond hair fell into his eyes at the shake of his head. “don’t make promises to me that you’re gonna break,” he spat out. tears welled in chad’s blue eyes. an incredulous, crackled laugh burst from him. “what is so wrong with me, auds, that you insist on painting wonderful lies on me that wash away?” 

   it seemed that no matter what he did, he would never be good enough for her. there was always ben to compete with. the perfect boyfriend, ben. he tried to ignore it– that she would always search for whatever those two once had. “don’t lie to me. just call this what it is.” the prince’s voice cracked. “just call this what it is and you won’t have to deal with me ever again.”

No, no, no, she couldn’t lose him too. Please--

She flinches when he swats her hand away, and swallowing, Audrey’s fingers twitch, before she lowers her hand to her side again. Her back is straight, feet together, and her whole body is stiff--poised, even when she feels like crumbling. 

“It’s not you, it’s--”

But it was him. Or was it her?

“No, I... I love you.” But I’m not in love with you. 

Was there something wrong with her? Why was falling in love so hard this time when it was so easy the first time?

She refrains from wiping the large tears that are rolling down her cheeks. She forces herself to be still, gripping the skirt of her dress until she can feel her fingernails digging into her palms through the material. “I-I love you, please, Chad ...p-please don’t leave me. Please.”

    the smile on the prince’s lips only grew at the kiss to his cheek. chad knew audrey left her mark behind and was more than happy to have the pink lips stained on his skin for the time being. others might have been embarrassed by such a thing, but he was proud– proud to be the subject of audrey’s affections.

   as she led him away, chad kept an arm wrapped around her waist. “no need to worry, ma belle,” he teased and pressed a kiss to her head. “i’ve taken much harder hits.” in truth, the blond’s ribs ached from the few blows struck to them; however, he was lucky they were not broken. “no one stood a chance against me today, though. not even jay.”

It was exactly the sort of thing that she liked to hear. As well as being handsome, Chad was capable, and Audrey wouldn’t settle for anything less in a boyfriend. “Sounds like a successful practice.”

The kiss to her head was a surprise, but it was one that made the princess’ cheeks blush pink. There was always a formality to the affection exchanged between her and Ben--a couple of chaste kisses on the lips here and there, or a kiss to the back of her hand. While Chad would still do all of that, Audrey liked the times when he pulled her close, unprompted, or planted kisses in . He was willing to give all of the affection that she craved, and she was more than happy to reciprocate.

“You know, if you’re not too tired, I was thinking we could spend the evening together?” She found herself asking, peering up at him. “Um, I don’t really have anything planned out like I usually do, but we could figure something out together, or have a night in at my dorm...?” It wasn’t something that Audrey had been intending on bringing up, but now that she was in Chad’s arms, she didn’t want to depart yet.

   the current situation was certainly not something evie ever expected to occur between the two of them, but she would not complain. audrey was beautiful and despite what their previous interactions might have suggested, kind. it was a welcome surprise, at the end of the day. evie’s other hand gently rested on audrey’s waist as she awaited the sensation of their lips against one another.

   the breath in her lungs was quickly whisked away when at last their mouths met. audrey’s lips were almost imperceptibly soft, if it weren’t for the pressure. evie had exchanged many kisses in her life, but none quite like this. it was a new kind of exciting, one she did not know she lacked.

Her lips moved gently against Evie’s, and somewhere along the way, Audrey’s hand had come up cup the side of the other girl’s face. It felt soft, unlike the shaved down stubble that brushed her own face whenever she had kissed boys in the past. Was it possible that she enjoyed this sensation more?

She broke away in time, pressing her own lips together momentarily, before she managed to meet Evie’s gaze once more, blinking through her daze. “...uh, wow.”

  the string of questions from audrey caused a lump to swell in ben's throat. fingers played with the ring on his hand as his green eyes stared at his feet. "no," he almost whispered out. finally, ben looked at her with a sincerely apologetic expression. "you weren't wrong, audrey. you weren't wrong because i lied to you," he admitted. a shaky breath was pulled into his lungs. "i let you think everything was perfect so that i didn't hurt you. so that our parents were happy-- so everyone was happy even though i wasn't. it wasn't fair to you, or anyone for that matter. i didn't mean for it to happen like this."

This couldn’t be happening. Not again. 

Normally, Audrey liked to think that she saw the world through a rose tint--there was beauty in everything. When Ben broke up with her the first time, she could hardly see anything past her own tears. Now? All Audrey could see was red. 

“So, let me get this straight...” She swallows down her temper. “First, you dump me in front of the whole school. Then, in the same hour, you profess your love to the daughter of the woman that tried to murder my family. Then, you find out that same girl has been using you to try and take over Auradon, but you decide to keep dating her anyway,” She lists off, growing more and more visibly frustrated with each item she lists. “And now, I’m finding out that you lied about ever loving me... Wow. You really know how to make a girl feel special, don’t you?”

He really did make her feel special before.

Her eyes sparkle with angry tears that refuse to fall, and she’s smiling too tightly. “You’re right, Ben. That’s not fair,” She shakes her head. “You know, maybe you do deserve someone like Mal. You’re both liars, after all.”

He hops onto Wynn, doing it with a practiced ease that was second nature at this point. It was the way he and Wynn tended to move as one when they were together and working together. “It was not my intent to imply that, Audrey,” he said as he gave Wynn a pat. “I was merely worried that our trail is not that simple even for our mounts, and I am more unfamiliar with your amount of expertise in riding.” Not everyone grew up as he did, especially those from the kingdoms closer to Auradon’s capital.

She does her best not to make it obvious, but she does wind up rolling her eyes. “Fine. Horseback riding isn’t really a... consistent hobby of mine,” She confesses, holding herself high upon her saddle. “I only really do it in the summer when I’m home in Auroria. It’s not like school let’s us keep horses around the campus, you know?”

   it wasn’t often that evie found herself truly speechless. yet, there she was, with her eyes locked with audrey’s and searching for the answer to what felt like a surprisingly important question. the sound of her own heartbeat swelled in her ears as she leaned ever closer to the other.

   a hand reached up to gently card through audrey’s hair. if audrey was talking about kisses, she figured a small gesture of affection would be an easy start. when evie’s hand finished with the hair, it rested at the base of audrey’s neck.

   “no, i’m not going to stop you,” she finally answered with an almost relieved sigh.

Fingers threaded gently through her hair, and goosebumps trailed over the back of Audrey’s neck. She wasn’t a stranger to gentle touches. When Ben had done it, she felt like the most special girl in Auradon. When Chad did it, she knew with full confidence that he was hers. When Evie does it... somehow, it makes Audrey feel like she was Evie’s, even if it was just for this moment. 

With permission finally granted, she leans forwards until their lips meet, and her eyes flutter shut. If Audrey thought that Evie touching her felt different from others, then kissing her was a whole other experience too. She liked this. A lot.

  eyebrows raised at the compliment as chad wiped his face with his towel. it had been an intense fencing practice and he just got out of the shower, changed into his light blue tracksuit. a smile broke onto his face; the towel was stowed in his bag before he tugged at audrey's waist to pull her closer. "yeah?" he tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "you look hot in everything."

“Yeah,” She mused, letting herself get pulled closer. “Blue’s a good color on you, mon charmant.”

Standing on her tiptoes, she leans up to press a kiss to his face, leaving a faint pink lipstick mark on the hollow of his cheek. She makes no move to wipe it off, instead smiling wider at the sight of it. 

Pink and blue, perfect.

“Awe--I know I do,” She accepts the compliment with ease, and leads the two of them away from the locker room door. “You didn’t get too roughed up today at practice, did you?”

   when evie had first met audrey, she hoped they could be friends. after all, a royal friend would have been perfect to help her understand the ins and outs of life in auradon, but the other girl hadn’t been so friendly, at first. of course, the seamstress supposed it would be just as fitting to have a royal rival, instead. while she believed that her and audrey would never be on the same page, the once wannabe princess still hoped they could someday get along.

   from their sudden closeness, it seemed that day was closer than she thought. a perfectly pouty red bottom lip was caught between her teeth as evie felt her heartbeat soar. “it’s okay,” she started quietly. 

   evie bashfully looked away at the question in a poor attempt to hide her ever-reddening blush. “i don’t think so, no,” she breathed out.

Eyes were fixated on red lips, but Evie’s voice did temporarily snap Audrey out of her stupor, and her gaze snapped up to meet the girl’s brown eyes instead. They were... also quite pretty to look at. 

The attempt at comfort was much appreciated, and Audrey managed a nervous smile. The entire time, she hadn’t moved away yet.

“And... you’re not gonna stop me if I do?” She asked, needing to make sure, her voice light and perhaps a little breathy. She only wanted this if Evie did too. It was too embarrassing to imagine,  if she didn’t...

He tilted his head, as he refrained from saying everyone looked like people who die because everyone died. He figured she would not take to kindly to that. He swallowed, and gave the most unconfident answer ever as it stumbled out of his mouth, “No?”

“Exactly.”

His tone barely registered in her mind, it was good enough for her. 

“And I’m not so fragile that something like a horse ride is going to kill me. I know what I’m doing, and Rosie is a sweet girl--aren’t you?” She smiles brightly at the horse that she had already mounted, before peering across at Art again.

    the blond’s hands wrung in front of him as he swallowed the lump that quickly formed in his throat during her apology. part of him believed that he was over all of it, that he had finally come to terms with the fact that they would never be together– that she would never love him nearly as much as he did her. “yeah, it really isn’t,” he muttered.

   chad was not always vulnerable with his emotions, but audrey brought it out of him. a shaky breath was taken into his lungs. “look, i didn’t expect you to fawn over me or whatever.” deep down, he always he was being used but it didn’t make it feel any better. “but you weren’t supposed to hurt me. not like that. not without talking to me.”

It was never a real relationship, it was never supposed to be. That was what Audrey told herself. It was pretty obvious that Chad was a rebound when they started dating, she knew it, and she was certain that Chad did on some level too ...and then things got messy, and Audrey left to stay at her aunties’ cottage for the rest of the semester. People started saying Audrey had dumped him. Audrey never bothered to deny anything when she came back.

“Then let’s talk now,” She was quick to give in, her fingers fidgeting, as she straightened up and scooted closer to him. “Let’s get on the same page. Together.”
