Hey guys! So today, i was talking to one if my friends about cosplay. She wants to do it really bad but she thinks that she’s not “good enough” or “pretty enough”. I’ve also lately been seeing things about how people are comparing “good” cosplayers and “bad” cosplayers and thought i should share my input on this.
The picture i have posted here is a comparison of my VERY FIRST cosplay (kakashi from Naruto) and my most recent cosplay (Hanji Zoe from Attack on Titan).
My first con ever was Ohayocon 2011. I’ve seen cosplayers around and i wanted to dress up also. At the time, i knew absolutely shit about cosplay. My first cosplay, i basically spray dyed my hair white and stuck it up with a shit ton of hair spray. I’d bought a koniha headband a while back and i tilted that over my glasses. My mask was just my brother’s old ninja costume i ripped up. I couldn’t find a green vest so i went to the con in my kakashi jacket from Hot Topic, and black slacks. I was actually very proud of myself, despite knowing i didn’t look as good as some of the other kakashi cosplayers around. At this time, i didn’t know anything about wigs, where to buy cosplays, how to put on make up, how to make cosplays, or anything else. I didn’t know anyone there (other than the friend I came with) and was awkward around people because i didn’t know what was and what wasn’t acceptable at cons. I hardly took any pictures at this con because i was too shy.
My most recent con was Matsuricon 2014. On Saturday, i dressed as Hanji Zoe from Attack on Titan. This is about 3 years since my very first con. I’ve been to a total of 11 cons since Ohayocon 2011. I now know where to get good wigs, i can do make up fairly well, my cosplays look better and i’ve mixed them by buying some, making some, and buying the rest from thrift stores and whatnot. I’ve since then recconnected with old friends (Kida’s page). friends at cons; including my cosplay partner VAN チャン. I walk around now and have people take pictures of me in my cosplays/ which is a very flattering experience. I’m not so shy anymore and i feel more and more confident in my cosplays. Sure, there are things i can work on with each cosplays I do, but i keep tweeking and making it better. Not for anyone else; but because i want to.
You see, i have just as much fun now as I did at my first con. I’ve gotten better at cosplaying because i’ve met more people who give me good (kind) pointers. But i try my best at cosplays for me; not anyone else. Because cosplaying is for fun. I work hard on my cosplays because I want to. I’m not perfect at cosplaying; and i don’t pretend to be. But i find it fun to try and better myself.
Ad I hate it when people bash others for having “bad” cosplays. If they’re having fun, who cares? Whether they want to upgrade and better their cosplays or not is their own choice. If they’re happy with the cosplay they have now, then more power to them!
And body type shouldn’t matter either. I’m big chested, but I still cosplay boy characters. I’m overweight, but i still rock my cosplays. I can’t put in contacts so if i wanted to cosplayer a character with a different eye colour, i have to photoshop it in. I’m short, but i cosplay tall characters a lot. Not having the same body type as that character should not stop you from cosplaying a character you love.
If people bash you for it, hold up your head high and keep your dignity, because in the end, you can rock it with confidence.
