… did he write this and forgot to actually film it? Because that’s not what I watched. I saw a young man trying his all to push back against plans laid out for him, trying his all to stay with the girl he deeply cares for. He literally tells her, “A perfect show is how I stay in SLC—a perfect show is how I stay with you,” and it essentially went in one ear and out the other like she didn’t care, or want to care. And then broke up with him citing she didn’t want to be a “maybe.” Someone should tell Gina she had a really great boyfriend because I don’t think she knows.

I knew R/G was going to happen. It’s unfortunate for me and a great portion of the fandom, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see it coming with the way the writing has been all season. I had hoped however it happens, that EJ (and us) would get closure. Not all relationships are meant to last, especially at such young ages—but it’s upsetting that not only did EJ not get closure, he was also misunderstood and Gina all but said he was an alternative. Her big breakup speech about not being a “maybe” while EJ was her “maybe.”

It’s just… so fucking cheap. EJ has lost his girlfriend to Ricky twice. TWICE. And the thing that honestly pisses me off the most here is that it made no sense this time around. If EJ and Gina had just fucking talked to one another then this whole thing could have been avoided. EJ loves her. He is in love with her and for her to act like she’s some sort of second choice is absolutely insane. Now of course i understand why she might feel that way but like realistically, it makes no sense. EJ has always shown up for Gina, no matter what. And what? Suddenly a couple of weeks over the summer where EJ clearly has just an absurd amount of responsibility and stress is enough to convince her that he doesn’t take them as seriously as she does? “I was ready to build a future with you” AND A FEW WEEKS OF HIM BEING STRESSED OUT AND DISTRACTED WAS ENOUGH TO RUIN THAT FOR YOU???

I am just so tired and absolutely pissed. They didn’t even ruin EJ’s character like i’ve seen people suggest, they just wrote the stupidest most unbelievable breakup of all time for him and Gina so that Ricky could get the girl again.

Also this quote from Tim: “Gina’s big thing is that she doesn’t get anything right the first time, but she doesn’t stop when she sees something she wants”

Her first love interest/crush/whatever on this stupid fuckshit of a show was RICKY not EJ and he’s gonna act like EJ was just some sort of fluke? Some sort of stepping stone for Gina? That makes no sense narratively, it makes not sense for Gina’s character, it makes no sense period.

I’m so done this show is such a waste of wonderful potential.

Of course i’m going to watch season four bc honestly there is no way EJ and Gina aren’t endgame. I will however be watching each episode with an entire bottle of wine otherwise i won’t survive.

I feel deeply sorry for EJ as a character, he deserved so much better. He just wanted to have a great last summer with all his friends. Instead, he got all this shit dumped on his head and still tried his best to make a great musical happen so those friends could shine and his dad could be proud of him. And in the end, he never even got a “thank you for the effort, EJ” from his friends. Or any recognition from his dad. And ended up losing the girlfriend who apparently didn’t even like him in the first place and was just killing time waiting for someone else. For the second time. And even then, he chose to take the higher road and managed to call Ricky his brother (which they aren’t, they are barely even friends). Everyone else gets support from the wildcats, everyone else gets to wrap up their summer happily. He just gets to be miserable all the time. Honestly, I’m never watching another episode of this show, but I still hope they can give him even an ounce of happiness on season 4. Because what he got so far is just complete bullshit.

Ok, I just needed to come back here after I was given the information that Tim Federle said, in a post season interview, that while he’d love to write for EJ in the future, they’re focusing on the high schoolers right now. Which I understand. But then why leave him in the absolute lowest most miserable point in his life, without any direction or any support system to speak of? Why have him as a main character for 3 seasons only to use him as a plot device every time? Why give him these complex and relatable struggles that young people go through if its gonna lead to... absolutely nothing? If he’s just gonna fade into forgetfulness, why is this point of no resolution where they chose to leave him at? Does someone in the writer’s room have an archnemesis named Elton John? That must be it. Or then someone please spell it out for me cause I can’t see the reason.
