Desert Hearts (1985) Dir. Donna Deitch
“A vampire is a creature of total want, of pure appetite, an antithesis to our self-denial, and I find myself picking through the bones of the story about the tension between these two states. Appetite is a dirty word for women, a cardinal sin. For food and sex, yes, but also for power, for ambition, for violence. What is Carmilla but a woman unleashed on any limits on her appetites? Does it make her monstrous? Is what we celebrate in men always monstrous in women? Is it also not monstrous to starve ourselves, to kill our appetite until we embody a living death?”
Hungerstone, Kat Dunn
Hungerstone by Kat Dunn is a worthy addition to the annals of sapphic vampire stories and does a phenomenal job challenging what a vampire story can be. There is a viscerality and surreality to it that pushes it more towards the pure Gothic than the conventional vampire narrative. Loosely inspired by Carmilla, the plot follows a thirty-year old English noblewoman who has moved to a country manor newly purchased by her new money husband in desperate need of refurbishment. She has dedicated her life to amputating her own wants in favor of serving others, but she takes in an injured young woman who challenges her to do otherwise.
A dry description of the premise does not do the narrative even close to justice. The prose is impressionistic, emotive, and simultaneously introspective and self-deluding. Carmilla's nature as a vampire is never revealed in full, only alluded to, and she looms like an enticing spectre of id in our protagonist's mind. The house feels more like a monster, a synecdoche for the grievous harm our protagonist's circumstances have pushed her to inflict on herself. As she allows herself to rediscover want, the experience is as uncomfortable as it is elating, her desires as cruel and unjust as they are wholesome and fulfilling.
If you can live comfortably in ambiguity and take joy in seeing someone living rather than living well, I highly recommend this book.
