I was abused by my mother from a very young age,groomed by an elderly man and also assaulted by two other family members. I created the I SURVIVED IT tag for all those that survived something they never thought they could and for all those who came out the other side fighting. Three Myths about Child Abuse

1) It is only violent

This is defiantly not true there are several forms of abuse i.e Emotional abuse and neglect. These can cause just as much damage as violent abuse if not more at times.

2)  Only "evil" people abuse children.

This is a false assumption. Not everyone intends to harm their children. Many times the parents were not intending harm their children but many times were being negligent.

3) Most Child abusers are strangers

     Much of the time the victim knows the person that assaults them. More often than not it was a friend or family member that is responsible.

The Difference Between The Lines

I firmly believe that West Virginia’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Law gives an protecting shield for minors better than Delaware’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Laws.  Delaware’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Law differs from West Virginia’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Law ,because Delaware’s law concerns with young female minors under the age of the sweet sixteen and West Virginia’s law concerns with minors under the lawfully eighteen. This age difference may cause many problems ,because if a minor is seventeen or eighteen there is no parental consent or notification law needed to protect the minor. Delaware’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Law allows a minor under sixteen to give notification to an grandparent or a mental health professional not just the parents, where as West Virginia’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Law does, this could pose a possible problem as well, because a mental health professional is not part of the minor’s family or the minor’s health physician and the grandparent is not an legal guardian of the minor ,thus rising the question if grandparents are equivalent to parents. Virginia’s Planned Parenthood Parental Notification Law is straightforward and concerns only the parents of the minor, most importantly, this law deals with ALL minors ,not just minors under sixteen.

Why we should change school policies

The recommended law I would want to try would be to try to equalize students religions and remove the idea that certain topics cannot be said in schools but instead be free to be a talked about as an open subject. In my classes, teachers have openly admitted that no form of Christmas can be expressed in class rooms such as movies or decoration. Also at my high school during Black History Month, it has a required seminar about their culture. I think there should be seminars about all other cultures as well or remove this seminar in order to keep everything as equal and fair as possible to other students. We should teach the different viewpoints and cultures to the youth in order to educate them on the diversity of us. Learning about each other, kids could learn more about each other and result in showing compassion and an understanding for their peers. Some people may argue that people are naturally going to discriminate but eventually we want to be the good guy as show in a study done with babies and kids.

Time for a Change

A policy of expanding the states CPS would be a balanced solution to assist in solving the issue of child abuse. It provides more assistance without overstepping states’ rights and would not be a huge task to reform the current system.  This would not help the children being abused while people argue over technicalities of laws. Keeping the current policy in place and simply expanding on it would be the best solution for the citizens of the US. They would have to reform all of the current policy in additional to trying to pass new laws on the federal level.

This policy would expanded on what is already been put in place and provide more local jobs to stimulate the state’s economy and in turn the nation’s economy. The policies in place would be reflective of the people in the area rather than the national level where people may feel misrepresented. The expansion of the business creates entire new fields of work while limiting the repercussions of a complete overhaul.

                                       Laws for Change

Approximately 5 children

Approximately 5 children die each day in the United States every day. California P.C. Section 1165.2 subsection (a) defines severe abuse. This law describes severe mistreatment of children malnutrition or a non-organic failure to thrive. This includes the children not having proper homes or shelter.

This extends to not being able to provide medicine housing or basic necessities of the children. These abuses can be intentional and non-intentional the law extends to the same degree. This law requires shelter, food, clothing, and medical care to be provided by parents to their legal minors. This law is not specific, however, there are several types of child abuse some are not given the proper attention needed.

Physiological damage can permanently incapacitate someone which, should be classified as severe abuse due to of the lasting effects. The children that are affected in this way, should be treated for the damages brought upon them. The child abuse laws began in the early 19th century where people attempted to limit the children working in factories. This was beneficial to children’s health at the time. In 1962 child abuse became a more relevant issue and the federal government began to give grants to child care services in order to remove people off the streets.

Today, there are strict laws that surround child abuse. Between 1.6 and 2.8 million children were reported to have run away, of these, 80% were reported to have been abused. This lead to the creation of the CPS (Child Protective Services). The government enacted this law and several  others for children’s welfare.

The Two Worlds And Child Abuse

In the world approximately eighty percent of children that die from abuse are under the age of three.

China and The United States are two completely different countries. Both countries have a some form of republic , however, China is more of communist country while the U.S. is more of a democracy.

China does not have nearly the amount of child protection laws as the United States does.

Even though the U.S. is not perfect, the U.S. does a better job at protecting their children than China does.

In China there are hundreds if not thousands of despairing children.

Children are left behind like trash while the parents look for work in other countries.

These children have no way out, most do not even know they are being taken advantaged of.

They wake up and think it is normal for an adult to sexual and physically abuse them.

In China the punishments of the abusers are not serious. The ‘efforts’ of the  government to protect the children is a complete joke. Within China if a citizen bought an abducted child the penalty may result ,AT MOST, three years imprisonment.

Committing rape in China may result in a fixed-term imprisonment from three years to ten years, and if it is a “serious circumstances” defined in the The PRC Criminal Law happens, a fixed-term imprisonment from ten years up to the death penalty could be imposed.

Criminologist Wang Dawell states “ Behind every reported sex abuse case, there might be six hidden cases unreported.”

In China seventy percent of all sex abuse cases happen at schools.

A primary school principal was sentenced to thirteen and a half years in prison for molesting six female students.

In the United States a man from Alabama was sentenced to imprisonment for twenty years for raping an fourteen year old girl.

Thirteen and a half years for raping six child versus twenty years for raping one child.

There is a major problem here that NEEDS to be fixed.

Child Abuse is a serious topic that needs immediate attention.

Our childhood forms whom we will grow to be.

To abuse a child would be to destroy their future.

Child Abuse leads to serious emotional and psychological problems, as well as, substance and sexual abuse.

Our children are our future. We need to protect our future.

UK gov & child abuse policies

          The United Kingdom has a government of a Constitutional Monarch. The monarch rules alongside a parliament that helps keep balance between the monarch and their power. It has other subsiding territories that rule as devolution to the monarch. The monarch appoints a First Minister for every territory who acts as representative and their duties includes official and handling the development and presentation of their Government. The First Minister of the region appoints new cabinet members. The people do not have the ability to appoint members of the parliament nor any say in the law

            When it comes to child abuse, The United Kingdom follows CRC (the Convention on the Rights of the Child). The CRC is the universal law that all other nations agree to follow created at the United Nations. The only capital punishment that differs from the US in the United Kingdom is that being is hung is still a legal capital punishment. The sentence for child abuse in the United Kingdom, according to their CPS website, is 10 years. While the US sentence fluctuates between six to 25 years. Though both nations have an equal view on child abuse, the United Kingdoms’ child abuse rate has risen by 10.8% in April 2011 to January 2012. Scotland’s Government official Netta Mciver stated “By focusing on the more difficult cases, we are getting a better picture of the problems. But it's a disturbing picture.” Meaning that they are currently trying to understand the reason why it has risen.

            The contrast between The United Kingdom and The United States views does have similar ideas. Though the people of the United Kingdom have a constitutional parliament, unlike the US, don’t have a say in the laws of their country much less child abuse policy. I think that America’s ability to shape our own laws helps us change and improve our child abuse policies.

Two Extremes

North Korea and America have two completely different policies when it comes to child abuse. In North Korea the citizens work for the government and have almost no human rights. They have lived this way since the communist took over Vietnam. North Korea’s punishments are much harsher than in the US they will publicly execute someone who commits a crime.

In America the punishments are far less severe and they have a better chance to be cleared or investigated properly. The jail system in America mortality rate is 3% annually compared to North Korea’s Rate of over 25%. This shows Americas jail system is far safer than North Korea’s.

Child abuse is a common event in North Korea but is generally kept quite as it is an embarrassment. However, when they do deal with the issue the punishment is swift. They will either hang, fire squad, or thrown into “reeducation camp”.

Korea is run through a communist government which is the end result of a failed attempt extreme equality. However, in the true result is a select few end up abusing power and controlling the lives of everyday citizen’s through terror.

This turned a theoretically sound government into a living hell for the citizens of the country. American’s system is no way perfect or even the ideal government it is preached to be. However compared to Korea’s system it gives the child a chance. They founded the CPS in order to provide children a safe haven.

These Laws Are Suppose To Protect Our Children

A report of Child Abuse is made every ten seconds in the United States.

As of 2013, within the U.S. there are seventy-four million children, most of which see a doctor regularly.

One would think doctors would be able to report child abuse to CPS or the police, however, Penal code section 11164-11174.3 is a law that ‘protects’ the confidentiality of information received by providing health care.

A doctor is not required by any state law to report child abuse and/or any sexual activity the professional (being a doctor) learns about the minor and the professional may not share information with CPS or the police without the minor’s consent.

Meaning that if a patient is embarrassed of having people know about the abuse or does not want her or his abuser to be persecuted the doctor is not allowed to contact CPS or police.

This law is affecting both the doctors and patients. A doctor can save a life, but if the patient does not consent the life of the patient could be at stake.

Imagine if you were a doctor and you had a patient that was brutality abused, and she/he showed signs of being abused, however, when you asked if you could report her/his abuse to CPS and the police she/he said no.

Imagine how that would feel. As a doctor you are not allowed to share that information without the patients consent. What would you do? What would you try to tell them? How would you feel?

We have come far since the 1800s and1900s in regards to child abuse. There are more laws that are for the protection of children than ever before. There has been hundreds if not thousands of laws implemented to protect children.

Before hundreds of children have died in result of child abuse in the Untied States. Now four children die every day in result of child abuse.

We have come far, but not far enough.

Why 21 centurary medicine was invented

In the last 20 years, at least 172 children have been killed due to medicine faith-based healing because of the religions practiced by their parents.

Penal Code section 192 relates to the religions or beliefs practiced by US citizens in the church that include the prevention of certain, modern medicines and treatments. It concerns the children that are mortally injured or ill that have parents or guardians that do not seek medical help for their child. It states that any parents that practice these beliefs that they cannot force their medical beliefs on their child if their life is at risk or it will be considered child neglect. Health related a belief acts practice recognized by the church does not override the beliefs of modern medicines. This penal could be related to the recent cases of involving the Mormon beliefs that contradict blood transfusions and the controversy over the fate of the child.

There are currently 23 other religions that practice certain medical preventions that include Followers of Christ Faith Assembly, Church of the Firstborn, Christian Science, and Faith Tabernacle. Since the 1980’s, the top 21 diseases that kids currently die from included pneumonia Meningitis, diabetes, diphtheria, and appendicitis. The website “amednewsstated” reported that “At least 10 child deaths related to faith-based medical neglect come to light each year,” The Website “Desim” stated that “A 1998 study conducted by pediatrician Seth Asser and by the founder of Children's Healthcare is a Legal Duty (CHILD), Rita Swan, shows that over a 20 year period there were 172 child fatalities with the vast majority of them being caused by parents who accept and believe in the Bible-based religious superstition of faith-healing.”

Because of this law, child deaths due to religious practices have been recognized. However, some restrictions this law shows are that it only goes into effect if the child’s life is at stake; this Policy does not appeal to any other rights the child has such as social of economic needs, or any other of their physical well-being.

Howard Zinn Child Abuse

“All over the world, governments play national and ethnic hatred. I am aware of violence of everyday life for most of the human race. All represented by the images of children. Children hungry. Children with missing limbs. The bombing of children officially reported as “collateral damage”. “– Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn’s quote relates to child abuse, because war, mistreatment, hate, and violence lead to the death of our children, our fathers, our mothers, our families, our friends, and our fellow citizens.

Unfortunately, our governments try to work around criticism by stating as death is simply “collateral damage”, thus stating the death of a child or a loved one is insignificant.

I agree with Howard Zinn’s belief of equality and social justice.  I believe in equality as Zinn does. Everyone should have a chance of a successful life without unfair treatment.

I believe children get the worst end of the stick in a time of war.

I believe children are often pushed to the side, due to the fact that their parents ultimately make the decision that in all will seal the fate of life and death of their children and other’s children.

I wish to help relieve children from all sorts of abuse. I wish to unbind those whom are bound and shackled by law.

I will spread awareness of child abuse by informing people I come in contact with or/and those whom read this blog.

Howard Zinn spread awareness of social justice and helped end racial segregation by simply being a drop that help starts the pour of rain fall.

I hope to be this drop of rain water that starts the pour as well.

Howard Zinn: Words for the future

“It was those students and so many others who made the Spelman years, with all that turmoil-even with being fired-such a loving, wonderful time. Watching them change in those few years, seeing their spirit of defiance to established authority, off and on the campus, suggested the extraordinary possibilities in all human beings, of any race, in any time. (Zinn 45)”    

Children are the future of our world. The human race is capable of so many things each generation brings its own remarkable contribution to our society. When we harm Children we are not only harming one person we are harming the potential of the human race as a whole. 

Children are born with the greatest imaginations with endless possibilities that show cases the greatest of humanity's traits. It takes one person to change things but if that person never gets the chance to express their ideas for the future the human race can no longer progress.

This is one of the greatest atrocities that humans have committed they satisfy their own selfish needs by taking out their problems on the future .We would become a regressing species. Children are what we consider pure and innocent. They are not guilty of any crimes committed against another human being.  

If we give our children a home, family, and a chance to prosper then they will teach future generations to do the same. This will continue the cycle and humanity will continue to reach for the stars.

The newest Zinnsation

Pg. 25 “They were often bitter experiences, but they nurtured the anger that one day would become a great force and change the south forever”

I chose this quote because it foretells what’s to come. It’s about him remembering his anger about the past event. I admire the quote because I can feel his anger recalling his feelings and how he’s proud that what has happened has happened. The quote is a historical example about mistakes made over the course of time of how it will eventually lead to the backfire of the offender.

The quote can relate to the topic of child abuse is because child abuse doesn’t just affect our time now, it also affects our future. When a child is abused or neglected it not only affects them physically; it can lead to long-term effects. In the quote, Zinn quotes” …,but they nurtured the anger that one day would become a great force and change the south forever.” In this case, America represents its former, segregated past-self, and the children represent the black people being oppressed: And as long as America doesn’t do anything about this epidemic, it will soon backfire on us.

The reason why I think child abuse will backfire in the future is because children are our future. We may be young now but eventually we will run the world; and after we run the world it will soon be another generation’s time. And if we have abused children, then we will have an abused future.

Initial Impression

William Faulkner quoted, “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed.  If people all over the world…would do this, it would change the earth.”

I feel that child abuse should not be taken lightly. When children are abused, they are scared, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. We must protect the brilliant minds of the next generations to come, not hurt them.

I choose this topic because I believe this is a very important issue. There is a big difference from abusing a child and disciplining a child. William Faulkner’s quote is perfect, we must never be afraid to do what’s right and to make this world a better place for everyone. I have never been through any type of abuse, but I know someone who is very close to me who was abused.

I am not an expert, but in this blog I hope to open your eyes to this issue that is very real and harmful to not only the children but their loved ones.

My brother would hit my 7 years old niece when she would do something bad, like steal or lie. He didn’t know the right way to discipline her and he would hurt her, not knowing that he was mentally damaging her. Now because of the abuse she went through she is scared and has some horrible thoughts, thoughts that a 7 year old shouldn’t be having.

As social beings we are inclined to flow the crowd, because we fear ridicule from our peers. We are afraid to raise our voice for honestly and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed, because of rejection. 

There are children in this world that do not have a voice. There are children whom do not know how to escape injustice. There are children who do not know that they have a choice. 

These children are subject to abuse and stuck in a never ending traumatizing cycle. A cycle, in which, will forever change who they are as an person. 

It is our responsibility as a species to give a voice to those whom do not have a voice. We need to equality, justice, and fairness within all of our societies.

As a born female American high school student, liberalism, equality, and democracy will forever be within my heart. I believe that children should have the same rights as adults; Children shouldn't be seen as any less of a person or subject to abuse, because of their age.

 I am not an expert on child abuse; however, with this blog I hope to raise awareness and inform others about child abuse, I will strive to make a change within our world.
