Here’s a question that no one ever has a good answer for: why are cashiers forced to stand? Who decided people need to stand for 4 hours straight between breaks when they don’t MOVE?

At all my service jobs we were reprimanded if caught not-standing. We took turns sitting or squatting in a corner while somebody else acted as look-out. We came up with all kinds of code words and signals to alert each other when a manager was coming.

For me, that was the one small perk of stocking: I could bring a cart into the freezer and sit, completely undisturbed, for like 10 whole minutes. Bliss.

Because we have allowed people who live in perfect comfort to convince enough of us that there is virtue in toil, whether it accomplishes anything or not; that “work ethic” means not taking pride in doing a job well but suffering silently every second that you are paid.

I work in food & beverage and let me just say that every single one of my coworkers is in chronic pain. One of them has had multiple surgeries on his knees but continues to work eight hour shifts day after day after day, slowly destroying his body because there is no other way for him to make money.

I have worked in food and beverage for all of six years and I am in constant pain, whether it be my feet, my hips, my knees, or my back. it has reduced me to tears on several occasions but hell yes I will work that double shift so I can make 150 more dollars. I have broken bones in my foot that will never heal because I can’t take 6 months off of work for the severe damage to be reversed

what people don’t understand about people working in the food and beverage industry, the retail industry, any sort of service industry really, is that we’re all hurting, and hurting has become the social norm. if you want money and do not have the resources/tools/opportunities to get a desk job, you are expected to be in constant moderate to severe pain and still serve with a smile.

I have plantar faciitis, tarsal tunnel (carpal tunnel but in my feet), and tendinitis in my knee thanks to working at Six Flags and other retail jobs. I’m only 24.
