reblog and put in the tags at what age mental illness started affecting you
self-diagnosis ??? doesnt ??? invalidate ???? professional diagnosis ??? no ones taking ur disorder away from u just because they have the ability to recognise something is wrong with them, pipe down ???
Let me first say, I realize this is gonna start some controversy.
One of the reasons I’m so critical of self diagnosis is because of what I have seen on this site. I’ve been in the mental health system for literally years, so my experience with neurodivergence and mental illness is not based solely on my own experiences.
I’m really, really sick of seeing people(let’s be real, 99% teenagers) making posts about how they have NPD, BPD, HPD, AvPD, and a ton of other serious disorders with things like “lol today someone ignored me and I cried but that’s BPD for you!” No. That is being a sensitive teenager and that is normal.
“I would try to get a diagnosis but no doctor would give me one!” Because for many personality disorders, you have to be an adult and while diagnosing teenagers is possible, it’s highly controversial. Also- they have to rule literally everything else out before they give you a serious diagnosis like that. Emotional issues, irrational thoughts, and even hallucinations are not always due to mental illness. You could have a physical problem causing these symptoms- a brain tumor, a thyroid problem, etc..
“I know myself better than any doctor!” is simply not true, especially if you’ve given yourself a diagnosis of something like NPD that makes you feel superior to those around you and often overlook your own flaws. After years in the mental healthcare system, I still have professionals notice symptoms in me that I do not notice in myself. That is not because I’m not self aware of my problems, in fact I’ve been told I’m more self aware than a majority of my therapist’s clients. It’s because as much as I know about psychology and psychiatry, I’m not a doctor or a professional of any kind.
This anger is 100% towards people who have safe access to healthcare and choose not to take it. I completely understand if you are unable to safely get a diagnosis or can’t afford one, but still please keep all of this in mind before you give yourself a label.
I appreciate this post.
self diagnosis
I really don’t get why people don‘t go to a doctor for a diagnosis. Why do people think they’re qualified to diagnose themselves? Seeing a doctor doesn’t hurt. They won’t tell anybody anything you said or did, either, because they’re doctors, and, y’know, medical confidentiality is a thing.
So why would you not just go see a doctor?
Unless… you already know that they’ll tell you that you don’t have whatever you claim to have…
Some people are too paranoid to go to the doctor. Some people don't have the money. Some people don't have access to transportation. Some people are in abusive situations that make it dangerous to go to a doctor. Some doctors are abusive themselves. And many more.
Things I Wished Self-Dxers Knew, as an Actual Autistic
- You and I are not the same
- Your life does not “all make sense”, you’re taking symptoms and applying them to yourself to fit your idea of autism
- Even the MILDEST forms of autism cannot be self-diagnosed
- If you are autistic, people around you notice. There is no such thing as allistic-passing autistics
- As someone who has been known as autistic their whole lives, I honestly laugh at people who are just like “This is so me”… that’s not how it works
- If you were actually autistic like you claim, you would see how harmful self-diagnosis is
- I see endless strings of people complaining about how their parents do not accept their autism… maybe you should look at it from an outside point of view
- Social awkwardness ≠ autism. Flapping ≠ autism. Being overwhelmed ≠ autism. Not understanding sarcasm ≠ autism.
- FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP SAYING YOU’RE AUTISTIC IF YOU HAVE ASPERGER’S. YOU ARE NOT.
- If you have all the symptoms you claim, and you say you went through your whole life without ONE person recognizing it? BULLSHIT.
- This whole “pshyciatrists can’t recognize autism in anyone but a white cis male” is bullshit. Maybe they can’t recognize it in you because… gasp… mAYBE YoU’RE nOt AUtiStiC?!?! I am a mixed (Latina, Black, and Danish) girl, and my autism is friggin obvious, even when I try to hide it. Which leads me to my next point…
- YOU CANNOT HIDE AUTISM. SAYING YOU CAN HIDE AUTISM IS SAYING LIKE YOU CAN GO YOUR WHOLE LIFE WITHOUT SNEEZING. Sorry, but for actual autistics, autism cannot be hid
Oh, and PS, if you feel offended by this post, it’s because I am offending you. If you were actually autistic, you would read this and go about your business because you know it doesn’t apply to you.
- Sincerely, me and every actually autistic person I have met who is tired of all the special snowflakes trying to feel like their quirks are validated
Hello. I am a professionally diagnosed autistic person. I pass as allistic. For me, it is a matter of survival at home. It is a false statement to say that no one can pass as allistic/neurotypical.
Autistic person: (diagnoses themselves after years of research, self assessment, and talking to other Autistic people)
Society: No. Only a qualified professional can diagnose you with Autism.
Autistic person: (goes to a "Qualified Professional")
"Qualified Professional": You don't have Autism because you have friends and can make eye contact
person: I think somethings wrong
anti-self dxer: You need a doctor to tell you something is wrong before you can think it, sweaty (:
neurotypical: you can't just say you're psychotic even if you think you are hallucinating you need a doctor to diagnose you
neurotypical: donald trump is a psychopath.
Why I hate self-diagnosers:
They will distort their experiences and use confirmation bias to put themselves on the same level as people who are actually disabled/non-neurotypical
They act like they’re smarter than people who have studied the same thing for long enough to become doctors because Tumblr says so (or they think that their feelings and their teenage angst mean more than a degree for some reason.)
They use the excuse that they “can’t get to a doctor” when 90% of these people live in the United States and there are free clinics around. If you're really concerned about your health you will find a way to get to a medical professional, but this leads me to my next point:
They think they know more than doctors, right? So they don’t trust a diagnosis, so why are they pretending to have a disorder? To get medicine or treatment from people they think are stupider than themselves? These people are literally saying they want a disorder so they can avoid getting treatment based on whatever merit (OMG THE DOCTOR IS NEUROTYPICAL AND WHITE UGGHHH.) The only thing a disorder gives you is struggle, which means
Self-diagnosers are more often than not out for attention/pity/brownie points/oppression olympics points from the Internet so they don’t have to be responsible for all the horrible in the world that they attribute to the even-moderately-privileged-people.
They are literally taking a disorder and making it a cute little doo-dad they can slip on and off to fit in, meanwhile people like MEhave had to live with our disorders our entire lives and all the shit it entails (which, yes, is the ugly symptoms as well as the “cute” and “quirky” ones.)
You people are obnoxious and you’re making me and my ilk look STUPID. I’m high-functioning and I don’t want people to see me after YEARS OF HARD WORK AND PROGRESS and think I’m one of you goddamn snowflakes just trying to be special. >:c
What is it with all these goddamn generalizations? What right do you have to tell someone who says they can't go to the doctor what they are and aren't able to do?
