Regulus did not try single handedly taking down the dark lord for Snape to be considered the Slytherin hero/king. Even Slughorn fought the war for the right side, but he didn’t ab*se kids and manipulate people along the way.

Don’t imagine how hurt Regulus would be watching the marauders from afar. Don’t imagine how he slowly watched his own brother replace him. The same brother that took the blame whenever he screwed up. The same brother who comforted Regulus from the monsters under his bed as a kid, and later the monsters in his own house. The same brother who would read him bed time stories and tuck him into bed at night. Don’t imagine how much Regulus hated himself for being jealous that Sirius had finally found someone better than him and his worthless family. That he was free while Regulus was still trapped, too scared to be like his brother. Don’t imagine all those times Regulus almost walked up to the marauders to ask if they would be fine with him joining their activity. Don’t imagine Regulus strategically avoid the times he knew the marauders would be eating food in the great hall because he couldn’t stand to see his brother replace him and gain everything he ever wanted. Just don’t.

I think if regulus was an animagi it would be a cat. Cats are usually portrayed as prim and proper with them constantly licking themselves clean. Furthermore him and Sirius got on like, well, cats and dogs (canonically Sirius stated he hated regulus and his entire family). I think a black cat honestly suits him so well seeing as they are both worshipped in some places and considered bad luck in others. With regulus being the last respectable heir of the black family, he was likely very respected and we know he had extremely high status in society, however he saw himself as bad luck. His own brother had left him and his parents only liked him for who he pretended to be. He probably blamed a lot of it on himself and even the way he died was horrible. Also just black cat going with the entire black family name showing that no matter what both boys do they couldn’t escape their name. So honestly I think Regulus being a black cat would’ve been an amazing addition and should’ve happened. It’s so symbolic and just fits him perfectly. I do understand it wouldn’t have added anything and there wouldn’t have been a way we would’ve known if he were but I like to imagine he is :)
