Catherine chuckles. âIâm no knight in shining armor, darling.â She wasnât used to anyone acting like this, staring at her like that, not with her. âWhatever you want, Evie.â She lets herself be lead to the door, taking Evieâs hand in her own.Â
âShhhh,â Evie turns to place a finger on Catherineâs lips, but she misses, watching in confusion as it slides down her cheek instead, âYou said whatever I want, anâ I want... you?â  The question was for herself more than anyone else. Her brain was trying to scramble together her feelings, trying to make any sense of how she felt. âAnd you are definitely a brave knight.â She has a thought then, skipping off down the street with the vampire in tow. âYouâre old-- oops, that came out wrong-- youâre... experienced, yeah? Does that mean youâve ever actually done the amour thing? Forreal?â
Blood oozed out the side of Oliverâs mouth as he lifted his weary head of the hardwood floor. He welcomed the initial second blow just so the physical pain would give him something to focus on in the days to come. To his amazement the other wolf impulsively leaped with an aggressive punch sending the foe backwards. Oliver cheered his friend while managing to get his drunk ass off the floor. That was when he noticed the dickhead charge at Evie.
Clenching his jaw the pup moved into action. Originally Oliver wasnât much of a fighter, but now the blood of the wolf ran through his veins. He naturally had the instinct to take charge now. Stepping in front of Evie, Oli mustered up the rest of his strength and forcefully shoved the man causing him to crash into the bar. A triumph for many, but Oliver had a menacing thirst for more blood. With his hands curled into tightly wound fits the boy let loose, bashing his knuckles in until the anger would cease. His heart raced with anger and aggression, but it wasnât before long he could feel his body react to the excitement.Â
Stumbling back in agony his body start to sweat. Shit. Not here. Anywhere but here. âEvie we gotta go. Please.â He cried out as he clutched his chest in pain since he felt as though he couldnât breath. It felt as torturous like the first change, but this time all eyes where among him. âEvie please get me out of here.â Â Â Â Â
If Evie had blinked, she would have missed Oliver springing up to defend her. The drunken glee had left her as the altercation took a much more serious turn. Now she was scared, even more so as the boy moved after the man, not satisfied with what he had already done. She stood, colour draining from her face, watching in stunned silence as Oli brought his fists down time and time again. âOliver, come on--â The words were too quiet, though, drowned out by the shouts of the horrified and jeering crowd.
As soon as he stumbled back she caught him in her arms, already herding him out of the door and into the cold night air. She gave his shoulder a soft squeeze. âYou really lost it in there, buddy,â she murmured, hurrying the two of them down the street towards the outskirts of town. Her own change was creeping up on her, quelled somewhat by the alcohol, but she was doing her best to ignore it. There was no use in the two of them panicking. She could remember Carlosâ voice like he was there with her, the memory pushing itself into the forefront of her mind. âDonât fight it, Evie. Youâve got to greet the wolf like you would an old friend.â  Old friend, my ass. She buried the thought, willing the two of them onwards.
âIâm going to be honest, but youâre not gonna like it.â She said, looking down to him to see if he was okay, âI donât think weâll make it to the forest. Itâs too far.â Catching the eye of a passerby, her stomach dropped in fear. There was no way they could change here-- if they did, there was no doubt that the hunters would close in and call it a mercy killing. They were dangerous, and not just to themselves, either. Whatever little alternatives they had, they needed to find them, and soon.
incredible? Now that wasnât a compliment she received often. Most saw her as ferocious and aggressive, nothing more. Or that is what she thought people saw in her at least. âWell I appreciate the compliments, truly.â She smiles. âThough I am not sure of your curiosity. There were many things that lead me here, but Catherine had been the paramount.âÂ
âCatherine?â She asks, a little too quickly. âSorry-- I mean, I know youâre friends and everything.â The vampire was absolutely a good reason to stay. If it wasnât for the fact that Catherine had quickly become her idol, Evie probably would have left a long time ago. â...How did you two meet?â
Luc smiles at her, because she knew that was a lie, she had been watching for nights now, and Lucia hadnât been blind to it. âOf course you did, darling.â She says simply. âMy question is.â she pauses, offering a different smile now. âWhy?â
Evie wasnât stupid. Sheâd heard so many things about Lucia, not quite all of them bad, and there was a certain thrill than ran through her whenever she saw the demon. Plus, her alliance with Catherine made her even more of interest. âYouâre just... incredible.â She says carefully, taking a swig from her glass. âVery powerful, very interesting. I was wondering how you ended up here.â I was wondering how on earth you do it, she wants to ask, but the words never come. Sheâd definitely benefit from putting a few of Luciaâs qualities into her life, that was for sure.
Thankfully the alcohol numbed the pupâs emotions to where anything tragic that happened on the night of the ball was mentioned his reaction would be completely dull or amusing if the other laughed about it. âDude. Thatâs fuckinâ hard core man.â He laughed as he held up his shirt to show her the gash with stitches holding it together on his left side. âI only got sliced. Someone was about to falay my ass.â The tone hinted to it more as a joke, but Oliver wasnât about to let the realization that the knife behind that scar was close to bringing his death. For now he was enthralled with booze and the company of his friend. âMy âlil face?â He gigged. âWelp my and my âlil face are good. Got a roommate and theyâre like my bestie so I canât complain. S-so what about you?â He wobbled trying to stand up properly and bumped into someone else causing them to spill their drink on their date.
âShiiit sorry bro and other bro.â The pup went to apologize, but the person was much larger and not in the mood to take any shit. The man took his dateâs drink and poured it onto Evieâs shirt while saying âNow weâre evenâ. Â Oliver watched the man with heated eyes as he walked away. He couldnât just stand there and let his friends take shit for no God damn reason anymore. With his heart pounding with inexplicable rage the pup moved with hast turning the man by his shoulder to drill him directly in the face. This was a move the young wolf would quickly regret as the man came back around with a punch knocking Oli to the floor. Â
The gash was impressive, sheâd give him that. He sounded so much more put together than when theyâd first met. It was starting to sound like heâd settled in, after all. She beamed at him, trying to find a way to articulate her feelings in her drunken stupor. âSweet!â She replied. It was about as close as she was gonna get. Just as she was about to answer him, she felt the warm beer soak through her shirt. âHey!â She yelled, whipping round to face her assailant. Then Oliver took off after him.Â
Evie cheered when the first punch hit, quickly followed by a cry of anger as the man retaliated, sending the pup to the ground. Oh, hell no. She practically leaped over Oliver to grab the guy by the shirt, stomping on his foot before throwing a messy punch to his nose. The approach of the moon always put her on edge. It was a little bit of a shame that she was choosing to vent her frustration in such a way, but he deserved it, and she wasnât about to give up anytime soon. The guy stumbled backwards, a trickle of blood running from his nostril. âYou bitch.â He hissed. He started to charge towards her, and she stood her ground, hoping that the alcohol buzzing through her veins hadnât numbed her strength too much.
The whole thing was making Rachel more and more uncomfortable. First she had to go looking for her aunt and now this drunk woman wanted to arm wrestle her? No thanks. Shaking her head the girl worked on backing away,âUh- sorry. Iâm just looking for my aunt. She should be around here somewhere.âÂ
âIf you arm wrestle me, Iâll help you look for her.â She dug in her back pocket for something to bet with. âIâll give you...â Looking down at her hand, she counted the change, â... $1.38, and a button if you win. âM keeping the Wendyâs coupon.â She was determined, the smile on her face not faltering at all, even after the girl had refused.
Catherine could tell they was drunk, but up close she seemed all that much worse. âHell, darling.â She says as Evieâs arms come around her waist. The smell of alcohol assaults her nose more now. âgood to know I am soft.â she says with a smile. âWell Iâd been hoping that youâd be done for the evening. Perhaps let me accompany you home?â
She tucks a lock of hair behind Catherineâs ear, grinning dreamily at her. âYou came to rescue me?â She asks, looking up at her with wide, doting eyes, âTake me away, my handsome prince.â There was another laugh, then she was off, tugging Catherine over to the door.Â
âDonât touch me.â Mia instructed, a little disgusted with that behavior. Luckily for herself she was used to watching such a sight. She had handled countless of drunks across the centuries she had been alive that she knew how to handle it. Mia made her way over to the bar before calling the bartender over and requesting napkins. Once the fae got her hands on them, she returned to Evie with a sigh. âYouâre not funny. You should go home. And donât mention it.â She said, handing over the napkins.
The faeâs tone seemed to sober her up a bit. It had been a very long time since someone had taken the authoritative route with her. âMâsorry,â she mumbled, her hand dropping to her side, watching as she went. Once Mia returned with the napkins, she took the time to try and mop up the mess down the front of her shirt. âI donât wanna go home.â She said quietly, âItâs too silent. Anâ itâs lonely. Drinking alone takes away like, half the fun. It makes you think more, anâ Iâm done thinking.â
Per usual Rachel had to go out and find her aunt that night. She had already checked the Hollow but for some reason the girl wasnât able to find  her. Sighing Rachel started for the door, having already texted her aunt it was simply time to wait in her little four door until she got either a text or a call, letting her know what her aunt was up to that night. It was a ritual at that point which seemed to get older by the day. Walking towards the door she had bumped into a woman and was surprised when said woman started chatting her up. Awkwardly Rachel gave her a half smile,âY-YeahâŠ.. Good luck with that.âÂ
Evie beamed down at the girl. She was so pretty, and small, too-- the wolf practically towered over her. âOhmigod.â A thought hit her, and she turned to clear the table behind them both. âI just thought of the best idea. Youâre so small. So small. Arm wrestle me. I wanna see how tiny you are.â She gave the stranger a lopsided, dopey grin, waiting for her to accept. Excitement buzzed through her-- there was no way she could refuse, surely.
Moments spent alone sent Oliver back into the reality of those who opposed his and his friends existence and only craved nothing but death for them. And for what? Just because they felt threatened? Night after night with nothing to distract him the young man was desperate for his once self destructive nature. He started with whatever alcohol was laying around the apartment and eventually ended heading to the Hollow to further satisfy his thrust. Pushing through the crowd his drunken steps caused him to also collide with the person who crashed into him. He let out a drunken laugh at the comment followed by an even louder burst of laughter when he realized who it was. âShit. Evie you arenât the only one.â He giggled taking a sip of his drink and then noticed he was wearing it on his shirt. âAwh damnâŠâ He pouted. âAnd I thinks they stopped serving drinks too. Well I hope your night is going better than mine man.â He wobbled. âHow have you been anyway? Feels like I havenât seen since well shit I dunno when.â  Â
After seeing the mess on Oliverâs shirt, Evie frowned, patting the spillage sadly with her hand in an attempt to help somehow. âNâaw, shit. Sorry man, itâs wet now.â She shrugged, âMâokay. Did you know I got shot? Fuckinâ gnarly, amirite?â She tugged her shirt up to reveal the still bandaged wound from the ball. âWhich means I have waaay more time to drink.â Thankfully the alcohol had helped to blot out her sober feelings. In truth, the attack had left her more emotional than ever. It would have been so easy to become a recluse and feel sorry for herself, but that came with each morning after, when she woke up with a pounding headache, a new set of bruises, and no idea of their origins. For now she was a party animal, practically drowning in liquid courage and stupidity. âHowâre you? Sâbeen like, forever since Iâve seen your âlil face.â
Catherine couldnât tell you why sheâd taken to following Evie that night, but something had told her she needed to beyond the call sheâd received. Lucia had called letting her know that Evie had been turned away. For the demon to be worried was reason enough for concern to settle in her. So she set out to find her which hadnât been hard with the scenes sheâd been leaving behind her, still she stayed in the shadows, slipping from one to the next to keep an eyes on Evie. Finally sheâd had enough, her concern getting the better of her. She approaches them after having slapped the person on the back. âThat you have my dear, far too much I think.â She says softly next to her.Â
Evie turned clumsily at the sound of Catherineâs voice. At first she wasnât even sure that what sheâd heard was real until her eyes landed on her, and she gave a cheer, a few other patrons joining in. âCatherine!â She shouted excitedly, throwing an arm around her waist. âHereâs mâgirl. Well, not yet. Soon. You look good, damn!â Leaning in close to her, she planted a kiss on her cheek, unaware of the pure stench of alcohol she was exuding. âMmm, youâre so soft. Dâyou know that? Youâre soooo soft.â She leaned her head on Catherineâs shoulder, giggling to herself. âDid you come to buy me another drink?â
The ball had thrown Evie's life on its ass. She had two options: to sit at home, jobless, and mope about her injury; or to go outside and live dangerously. Did it even matter any more? Did anything matter? She'd turned into a reckless fool, but if the Horsemen didn't want her to live, then she wouldn't bother trying. The night had led her between bars, drinking away the pain and causing a scene wherever she went. After the Hollow had stopped serving her she stumbled towards the door, knocking into someone as she pushed through the crowd, spilling their drink down her t-shirt. "Ah, shit. Sorry," She slurred, "Looks like someone can't hold their drink." Her own words set her off into a wave of drunken laughter, slapping the back of the other heartily and causing their drink to spill even more. "I mean me. Cause I'm the drunk."
This makes charlie laugh. âWell I wonât disagree with that.â she smiles slightly a little surprised at the offer. âI know the basics Evie, well I know of them.â She sighs. âthe moon thing⊠planned on just chaining myself up in a nice little cell somewhere.â
Evieâs brow furrowed in concern at the thought of her alone on her first full moon. Chained up? It was as if she was treating her wolf form as some kind of foreign entity-- a monster, even-- rather than an extension of herself. âWhat? No way. You canât chain yourself up, your body will hate you for it. Plus, if youâre found by... you-know-who, youâll have nowhere to run. Come to the forest. I know a creek that nobody else has been to for years. No danger, no isolation, just the moon and the trees.â
