Porch Piracy Increased Penalties

In Florida, a Bill was signed, HB549, which enhanced penalties for Porch Piracy. The new law, which is in effect, increases the penalty for theft under $40 to a first-degree misdemeanor. The subsequent violation is now a third-degree felony. Further, if the property is valued at $40 or more, it's now a third-degree felony.

Porch piracy can have devastating consequences for its victims. The packages could contain medications, replacement parts for medical equipment, a child's birthday gift, etc. If you see something, say something. Be a good neighbor.

Being situational aware will help you get out of danger. In a new places look for the exits, security call boxes, alarms, safe rooms and your current address for 911. These are just a few examples. With a little more research you will be able to make your own list and every place you go practice this and it will become second nature.
