I wondered how Nitro Zeus would make facial expression and this is the answer. Nitro Zeus angry and with a genuine smile.
I’ve recently seen a lot of fic writers -including myself and some friends- begging for comments on their fics. Why is it that we even have to do that?
Fanfic writers often pour their hearts and souls into their stories and get next to no feedback. Amazing, huge pieces of work get next to no comments. But the hit count? The sub count? The bookmarks? Those numbers can be in the hundreds.
We see you there as a new sub, coming back to read the next chapter, which is nice. But y’know what that ends up feeling like?
“They don’t like it enough to comment”, “My story isn’t interesting enough”.
You’re consuming free content that people sometimes break their backs to put out for you and you can’t even leave a, “I really enjoyed this!”?
I’ve experienced and heard of people directly demanding content from writers then not acknowledging the content when it comes out. They simply read it, then move on like they’re owed it.
Fanfic writers don’t owe you a single thing.
Sure, there are times when you really are too busy to leave a comment. I’ve been there, where you squeeze in reading a new chapter on a work break or right before something you have to do. But I’m not saying that you have to comment on every chapter, just every few chapters. It really helps us see that you’re still there and invested, so if you have a second, leave a comment.
It doesn’t have to be long or detailed, just let us know you enjoyed it. Maybe point out your favorite part of the chapter. Hell, let us know -use constructive criticism, don’t be rude- what parts you didn’t like.
Most of us just want feedback.
A lot of the fun in writing a fic comes from interacting with readers in the comments for most fanfic writers, so if you enjoy a story let us know. It’s like paying us for our work without actual money.
And I know, there are a million posts like this and you might reblog it and think, “YEAH, THIS” but you best not JUST reblog this post. Take it to heart. Leave a comment the next time you read a fic.
And Hell, don’t just apply this to fics. Apply it to art, too. Fan artists and fanfic writers create a lot for ourselves and you. Don’t kill us off by ignoring our content while simultaneously demanding that we thrive just for you.
Leave comments, reblog art and add tags. Don’t kill of content creators because you didn’t appreciate them.
Tumblr keeps crashing so I’ll keep this brief–there is no reason for any author, any fic with over 200+ subs getting only six comments per chapter.
It’s sad. It’s pathetic. Lack of feedback kills fics, and kills authors desire to write. And maybe that doesn’t bother you, and maybe you don’t care. But in a couple months, when your favourite author has stopped writing that fic you love, and you can’t figure out why, remember: you’re part of the reason.
I agree whole-heartedly.
I’ll admit, I don’t write comments for every fic/chapter, but I try.
But this is exactly the problem most of my fics have…
Hello, here's one of the silent readers. That might have different reasons.
I'm reading very less, usually popular stories that already have thousands of views and hundreds of comments on sites where I don't even have an account. I probably don't know that your story even exists.
I'm reading selectively and only what catches my interest. Maybe I was on search for something to read and found your story. The summary sounded interesting, but after reading two paragraphs I figured this is not my taste and I moved on.
I read your story and it's bad. Everthing is full of typos, the characters are hollow, the story makes no sense. Did you even read your own story before posting it? I guess you're a beginner and I don't want to demotivate you, so I rather say nothing. I wouldn't know how to put this without hurting your feelings. I have nothing nice to say to balance it out.
I read your story and didn't like some things about it. Those points are a matter of taste and I would feel stupid for criticizing them about your story. The rest was okay.
I found your story entertaining, but I don't know what to say about it. There was nothing remarkable and nothing really bad. I don't want to write "thanks, was nice", which I could comment about every story like a spam bot. There's nothing I need to tell you. I have nothing original or helpful to say, so I don't do it.
Your story was great! I'm overwhelmed from the intertwined and carefully composited story, the deep characters and their development. There were surprising twists, but overall everything turned out as I would expect from a good fanfiction. It's perfect, there's nothing you could do better. Maybe there is, but you put so much work and sweat into it. Who am I as a small reader to criticize such masterpiece? I won't.
The story already has a lot of comments that reflect my opinion. I don't have anything to add.
The story already has a lot of comments that contradict my opinion. Maybe I got something wrong. I don't want to be the only one to express my opinion.
The story has no comments yet. I don't want to post something that will later turn out to contradict the general view, so I hold back.
I already posted some comments, but I never got an answer. The stories have been posted several years ago. Maybe you lost interest or don't log in anymore and you don't even see my comments. If you don't react and I don't know whether my comments were helpful I won't do it anymore.
You say you're writing the story just for me? That if I not comment you will stop? Eh, I'm not that important. If you don't want to write it for yourself, you don't need to write it for me either. I’ve read stories the author was really bored about and they just continued for the readers, so the story itself turned out completely boring. Just stop writing if you don’t like your own story anymore.
You say there are a lot of authors who complain about the lack of comments. My idea is that authors comment the stories of others who then in return write comments for the first one, isn't that so? Let me do the math. I posted like a hundred chapters overall, but I wrote like 10 comments for other authors. If everyone behaves like me, there are not enough comments for everyone. I would need to write a hundred times more comments to be a role model, but I don’t.
Maybe I'm not commenting, but maybe I'll draw fanart or I throw money at you or I write a fanfiction about your fanfiction to show I much I like it. There are other ways to express appreciation than to write comments.
Though, thanks for pointing that out. I'll try to improve.
