Both of them have been through so much, but they have persevered, through it all, and emerged stronger and happier 💪 ✨️
Karen Chen at the 2022 US Figure Skating Championships / Michelle Kwan at the 1996 US Figure Skating Championships
Kaori Sakamoto, Gladiator || 2022 World Championships
Rika Kihira has returned for the first time in seven months…
RIKA IS COMING BACK ON FEB 25–27 ON PRINCE ICE WORLD ⛈💫

at least this nightmare of an olympic season has made it clear that rika is 100% prioritizing her health, and for that i am grateful.
I don’t even want to imagine how mentally strong Rika has to be at the moment. Imagine having confidence issues your whole junior career and thinking you’re just not talented - even though you have a triple axel and are one of the only ladies with textbook technique on all triple jumps. Imagine finally overcoming those mental blocks in your first senior season only to get hate-comments and people spreading lies about your jumping technique because they can’t handle that you won against their favourites. Imagine all the most influencial people from the most influencial country in figure skating making it their job to paint you as an enemy in interviews and commentary.
Imagine getting robbed of a Worlds medal in your home country and having to act like it’s fine, even though you know that with the quadsters turning senior a chance like this might not come again. Imagine getting assigned to the two toughest GP events precisely because you didn’t medal at Worlds, while some other skaters get an easy road to the final. Imagine official skating news outlets acting like you don’t exist in their preview for a competition where you’re the favourite to win, and then painting you like a challenger once your existence is pointed out to them. Imagine going to Japan Open and getting robbed in your home country again. Imagine knowing full-well that you’ve improved over the summer, but seeing that your score is suddenly 10 points lower than before. (You all saw how proud she was after her skate and how her face fell when they announced the score.) Imagine knowing that even though Japan Open is a fake competition, the jury and technical panel were made up of ISU officials. Imagine knowing that the president of the ISU has commented on these results approvingly. Imagine then hearing that the judging panel for Worlds will consist of mostly judges from Eastern European countries with no Japanese judge. Imagine being injured on top of that.
Imagine what all of this would do to someone who’s biggest problem has always been self-confidence.
well two years later and i'm still sobbing, just harder than ever
shun sato really said rika kihira rights with that costume change 🥰
my injured babies... get well soon 😭✨
“I want to be a skater who can show my best in the biggest competitions. Not only jumps, but spins, steps, and presentation - I want to be a skater who can do all of it.”
