The internets weird double standards when it comes to remaking older peices of media will always be confusing to me
Like when a tv/film company remake or have interest in remaking one of their older shows/movies people get pissy and start dogpiling on the remake in question and harass the people involved in it saying about how "xyz shouldn't be remade it's perfect as it is" or "this is just a lazy cashgrab attempting to dunk on our nostalgia" or something
Yet when the discussion comes to videogames all of a sudden it's "I'd love to see a remake of xyz game" or "this game NEEDS a remake because it's so outdated compared to today's standards" I DON'T GET IT! 😭💔
is the attitude different because people want to see a new entry in their favourite game franchise? Is it because of "game preservation"? Because that's a terrible way of preserving your game, it's not really "preservation" remakes are a game built from the ground up that changes a lot from the original, the ff7 remake trilogy are VERY different games from the original ps1 game for example, especially when it comes to a remake of a game that you can still legally purchase of online stores, like why did tlou1 and rayman legends both get remakes when you can still legally purchase the original versions of those games on the ps store?! 😭💔 (Like don't get me wrong the rayman legends remake genuinely doesn't look that bad and the people involved seem to have put a lot of effort into it especially with the stuff they added but I digress) MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
Hear me out, but if Mikoto's writing is supposed to focus on the stress caused by toxic Japanese work culture instead of DID cases, then maybe DID shouldn't be added in at all.
i feel like mikoto is more of a jirai kei/werewolf kinda situation than John being an actual separate person
that being said mikoto t3 had wayyy more issues outside of the bad DID rep... it just felt so unrealistic and the plot points felt so disconnected (both from each other and from reality) compared to how they did.... literally everyone else??? (especially Amane hers was so good, all the aspects of her crime and her character tie perfectly into each other)
there HAS to have been a better way to ask the question of "is it fair to persecute someone for their crimes if it wasn't them who did it". Or characterise John better as an actual IDENTITY and have him be more than just "angry and violent". Anyways here's my headcanon that hopefully adresses these issues but is mostly just me having fun
Mikoto was raised sheltered and coddled by his parents, up until preschool or something. He gets into trouble for doing something and him, not experiencing scolding before, sees this as a personal attack. When he gets home (or when his parents are called to school) he cries about his teacher yelling at him. And instead of the comfort he expected they start to yell at him too for "embarassing them" or the like. This happens countless times and each time his parents (especially his mum) just yell at him for being a troublesome and spoiled kid even though that's how they literally raised him. Possibly escalating to physical abuse. Unable to handle this he begins to retaliate. He throws a tantrum and injures himself and his parents in the process. When he wakes up at the hospital he doesn't know why he's there.
uhh I don't know how to write alter splitting (i'm a singlet...) so this kid split into "mikoto" and "john" and maybe a third memory holder alter because in "mikoto"'s perspective he's always been the good kid his mum wanted him to be. and John is a protector alter that springs up whenever someone, usually his mum, verbally or physically abuses him for getting into trouble or making a mistake, and also handles all the stress from it. John gradually goes into dormancy as Mikoto grows up and teaches himself to be a good kid. Timeskip to him at work and being abused by the boss guy. Mikoto, indoctrinated by Japan's "work culture" that he grew up hearing about, tries to suppress the distress (which prevents John from coming back from dormancy) while wondering why it feels so raw and unfamiliar than how it used to be (because John was handling it all and Mikoto only has vague memories of it) until one day, he's unable to handle it (which of course doesn't take long since mikoto is NOT used to this AT ALL) and punches the boss in the face. As he watches his boss's nose bleed his brain (for the lack of a better expression) starts cortisolmaxxing. Mikoto is arrested and at the police station. That's all he remembers as he's sitting in his chair. Someone was talking to him, maybe. As his vision darkens a voice inside his head, that didn't feel like his own, whispers to him. "He deserved it. You acted in self-defence." Suddenly he zones back in and his boss was still in front of him, with a perfectly unbroken nose and still yelling at him.
That evening, he and his boss are the only ones left in the office (which is unrealistic because no employee clocks out before their boss in Japan but let me use my "creative liberty" card). Boss gets up and is about to leave. Mikoto grabs a fire extinguisher and slams it in the back of his head. Boss falls over but he's still breathing. Mikoto swings again. And again. And again. Adrenaline floods every blood vessel in his body. A voice in his head cheers him on, "Yeah, get that fucker!" When Mikoto comes back to his senses the guy is beaten to a pulp. John, sensing immense distress from Mikoto, takes over and cleans up the mess for him and takes Mikoto's body home to clean him and tuck him in bed.
When Mikoto wakes up the next morning, he feels oddly refreshed. Then the police at his door scene. The end.
so basically in this headcanon/au Mikoto and John are kinda tag teaming. Mikoto kills a guy and John gaslights him into thinking it was deserved. Well it kind of actually was but ykwim. Stress causes Mikoto to lose memory of this. So John didn't kill anyone which is why he's not under the influence of the all-knowing magic Milgram system. And John only serves to defend Mikoto, both physically and morally, even if he's not exactly the most moral at times.
