Lukomir-The Last True Bosnian Mountain Village

Lukomir is a Bosnian village which is located at 1494 meters above sea level,on the Bjelašnica mountain,making it the highest populated area of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the only settlement permanently settled over the year that is located above 1300 meters above sea level. Stećci (medieval tombstones) originating from the 14th and 15th century exist at the village and suggest that it was inhabited for hundreds of years. Although „stecak“ – old tombstone, can be found in the neighboring countries,Bosnia and Herzegovina have it at most - even 66,000! The homes in the area are made of stone while their roofs are composed of wooden(cherry-wood)tiles. The Rakitnica canyon is located nearby and is said to be the origin of a dragon by local folklore.

Lukomir is the highest altitude and most remote village in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Access to the village is impossible from the first snows in December until late April and sometimes even later, except by skis or on foot.

Lukomir is known for its traditional attire, and the women still wear the hand-knitted costumes that have been worn for centuries. A version of history of present-day Lukomir can trace much of their ancestry to the Podvelezje region of Herzegovina. These semi-nomadic tribes would come to Bjelasnica in the summer months because of the abundance of water. Podvelezje, a dry plateau above Mostar, could not provide the herds with enough water to sustain themselves over the summer months. For reasons not entirely known, many of the villagers from the Podvelezje region eventually made permanent settlements in the canyon and later in the place where it is now located. There are 50 houses in the village and only about 20 are inhabited. The village has its own graveyard and smaller group of ancient stecci - medieval tombstones (from Medieval Bosnia),as previously said.

This isolation has led to the preservation of the village’s ancient tradition that is reflected in traditional costumes, cooking, and animal husbandry and agriculture.

NY Senator Greg Ball has proposed a new bill prohibiting the possession and harboring of killer whales in aquariums and sea parks.

“The legislation (S6613) was introduced after the documentary “Blackfish” highlighted the captivity and confinement of Tilikum, an orca whale that has been in confinement for the past 30 years. Large marine animals, such as orca whales, can develop health issues and become agitated from living in the confined spaces that aquariums and sea parks offer.

Senator Greg Ball hopes to pass the legislation on the 4th Annual Animal Advocacy Day, which will be hosted on May 28th in the New York State Capitol Building. The free, bipartisan event is open to the public and will enable animal supporters to network, share information and lobby their legislators to raise awareness of the need to protect pets and people from abuse.”

The problem here is that this doesn’t solve anything! The animals already in facilities can’t be humanely released or even put in sea pens (which are really expensive to maintain). So while a nice idea, not really workable, and it focuses more on catharsis than feasible scenarios,

I’m going to go ahead and quote this post below because it’s my feelings on the matter. The large majority of anticap people are educated and understand literally freeing ALL the whales would be completely stupid, as it is with any animal raised in captivity and then released much later in life. Most likely the petition would approach it the way I outline below, not make it illegal tomorrow and release all the whales into the bay willy-nilly. Likely in practice it would make it illegal after a certain date or point, with provisions in place that existing animals would be on a case-by-case basis on what to do.

I personally would like to see sea pens used for orcas that we know would not survive in the wild anymore (“expensive” isn’t an excuse for seaworld, that makes almost in the two digit-three digit millions EVERY given year give or take, off the backs of their currently held orcas and dolphins) and then subsequently the breeding program halted, so we don’t HAVE this issue anymore. Let the existing whales live out their lives in relatively more comfort than they are in now, which is pretty much a glorified fishbowl.

I care MUCH less about the hit to Seaworld (for instance since they’re a huge offender) and other company’s wallets and more about them doing the smallest SLIVER of right by their animals that they profess to care about

‘I don’t know why a lot of pro-caps think we just want to fling all the captive orcas into the ocean and let them fend for themselves. We’re not stupid. We know that won’t work.

We know that captive born orcas would have a small chance of surviving on their own. Some of the wild caught ones might have some trouble as well because they’ve been in captivity for long.

But that’s not an excuse to keep them locked in tanks for the rest of their lives. Sea pens are a much healthier option for whales that are unable to survive on their own in the wild. They would have an endless amount of fresh, real seawater (none of that nasty chlorine). They would be in their natural habitat. They would be able to hear other orcas, and maybe even interact with them.

Even if the orcas couldn’t be released, they could, perhaps, go on supervised “walks” outside their pens to explore, just like Keiko did.

Some procaps like to say, “Oh that’s so expensive!!” Yes, it is expensive. But guess what? Marine parks make tons of money. They could pay for them.

I know sea pens aren’t perfect, but they’re a hell of a lot better than the lifeless, chlorinated tanks the orcas are in now.’

So actually yes, were this to pass it would start to solve a hell of a lot.
