INTERPRETATION

i. My Regina is pretty canon divergent because we all know the absolute mess of a dumpster fire that the OUAT lore was. Honestly, I don’t really follow canon much at all past season 3, and a lot of the pre  Storybrooke / Evil Queen stuff (like Regina’s childhood and early reign in Leopold’s kingdom) are headcanons. ii. The summary of my interpretation is that Regina was the daughter of Cora and Henry (Sr.) Mills. Cora molded / manipulated Regina’s life into becoming Queen for her own power & gain, and, as a result, Regina was forced into a non consensual marriage with King Leopold (Snow’s father) when she was only 18 years old. Out of rage, she attempted murder on Cora. She then arranged for the King’s murder by poison after she fell further into her own darkness / The Dark One’s teachings. Regina ruled for a while as sole sovereign of the land, and became known as the Evil Queen, until she placed the curse (given to her by the Dark One aka Rumpelstiltskin) to banish all of the fairytale characters to Storybrooke.  iii. There will definitely be themes of mental illness, trauma, and physical/emotional/sexual abuse here. These may be of a triggering nature, but they are a big part of Regina’s character. If you are easily triggered by this sort of content, probably best not to follow.

SHIPPING

i. My Regina is bisexual. The ships I will adhere to as canon in her backstory are Daniel/Regina, Maleficent/Regina, and Tinkerbell/Regina. My main ship for Regina is Swan Queen. I do not adhere to Outlaw Queen. Sorry, I just. Couldn’t get into it.  ii. This is a wlw heavy blog. I’m very passionate about wlw relationships and women in general, and I feel Regina was a very sapphic character. The subversion of the Swan Queen ship for more palatable, heteronormative romances (that were basically the same archetypes of characters, just men lmao) was, frankly, a cop out imo, and an insult to the wlw community. iii. I’m open to ships with chemistry regardless of muse gender. I’m also multiverse and multiship, so if the muses have chemistry, I’m all for it. That being said, I’m also a big fan of other dynamics, too. I enjoy platonic bonds, parental bonds, even enemy / rival bonds. Regina is a victim of sexual abuse and marital rape at the hands of King Leopold. It was quite commonplace in the Enchanted Forest for women to be promised / given away to men, often much older men, in exchange for a dowry. Of course, the women had no choice or say in the matter, as women typically held little to no position of official power or authority unless they were acting regent in the absence of their husbands/brothers/sons. Cora, being Regina's mother, had the right to confirm or deny a marriage proposal (technically the right was Henry Sr.'s, but he would have never refused Cora) and thus, Regina was forced to marry Leopold upon his proposal regardless of her personal feelings. After they were married, Leopold would do little to spend any time at all with Regina, save the occasional public ceremony in which they both made an appearance, and Regina fell into a deep depression.

On their wedding night, Leopold did not "consummate" the relationship, for fear of making Regina uncomfortable. He wanted her to settle in before trying to do so. As Regina isolated herself further and further, away from both him and Snow, and continued to show no interest in either one of them, he grew impatient, however. Was he not giving Regina a life of luxury, showing her kindness? Did a wife not have certain duties to her husband? She was not the young and supple Queen he had envisioned she would be. She was not acting like a mother to Snow. Despite his own perceived kindness and patience with her, she was being obstinate. Disobedient, even. In his head, he deserved more. After all, he hadn't married her simply for her looks ; he needed a mother for Snow, and, perhaps, an heir of his own : a son.

After the first year of their marriage, Leopold began to visit Regina in her bedchambers, and the abuse began. It was on a scheduled evening, and, after the second time he had demanded "consummation" of the marriage, he started locking her within the chamber days before, as Regina would slip out on the expected night. Eventually, Regina stopped fighting it, and even became pregnant, but she ended up miscarrying the child very early on, and afterwards, took a potion to make herself infertile to avoid having an heir / the cycle of abuse continue, should Cora ever find her again. She knew her mother would utilize any child of hers to the fullest advantage. Upon Leopold's murder (through Sidney), she was also relieved of his abuse at last. Though, of course, the emotional and physical damage had been done, and she fully embraced her identity as the Evil Queen.

               ah   yes,   leopold…      the   high   priest   of   the   church   of   night.      just   another   man   on   the   long   list   of   priests   that   would   serve   the   dark   lord.      they’re   always   so…      weak,   at   least   to   lilith.      also   entirely   misogynistic,   as   most   warlocks   are.      it’s   too   bad   a   woman   couldn’t   be   in   charge.      when   lilith   finally   gets   the   throne,   all   of   that   will   change.      out   with   satan’s   degrading   ways   and   in   with   more   progressive   laws.      the   brutality   would   remain,   as   lilith   is   one   of   the   most   brutal   there   is,   but   the   male   favoring   laws?      in   the   trash   where   they   belong.

               ❝   your   mother   is   nothing   more   than   a   power   hungry,   ass   kissing   witch.   ❞      she’ll   take   any   opportunity   to   insult   the   bitch.      ❝   however…      i   am   powerless   against   the   dark   lord,   you   know   this.      what   could   i   possibly   do   to   stop   him   from   deflowering   the   bride   to   be?   ❞      lilith   can   do   nothing   against   satan…      the   high   priest?      well,   that   was   a   different   story.      she   did   enjoy   feasting   on   the   hearts   of   men.      killing   him   would   certainly   put   an   end   to   the   wedding,   and   thus   end   the   dark   lord’s   claim.      for   now,   at   least.

               even   so,   would   satan   not   realize   what   had   happened?      would   he   not   discover   it   was   lilith   who   had   done   away   with   this   wedding?      lilith   may   be   the   first   witch   and   mother   of   demons,   but   lucifer   would   not   hesitate   to   kill   her   where   she   stood.      ❝   why,   regina,   would   i   risk   my   life   for   you?   ❞

WHY WOULD I RISK MY LIFE FOR YOU? She wouldn't. She wouldn't. Regina can't blame her. Lilith is a Queen of the Underworld ; arguably the most powerful woman in existence ; even still, a woman's power is only just so. Crushed and raw beneath the wreckage of violence, shattered, breaking before the carnage of the men on top of them ... pushing them down, under a pressurized asphyxiation, to pieces ... down to the ocean, deep, deep, down ... until all there is left to do is swim to the bottom. And sometimes, if a woman is lucky, a man's clawed hand will grip for them ; pull them up for air, for a few moments, and let her swim beside. Then they could hold on, forever, stand beside, but always seeing below.

Lilith's methods are methods scrutinized by the Angel of Death himself. Through her piercing, unfeeling gaze ; through her harsh words, Lilith reminds Regina of this. There is no escape from him. Mother's always said this, too ━━ a tiny, cruel smile upon her always ruby lips ━━ a smile that Regina's always wanted to mean warmth, and perhaps once or twice it did, but it's always of irony, now, and it implants an unshakable discordance alongside her vice grip on Regina's heart.

Regina can feel her breath hitch before Lilith's denial in much the same way Cora's voice shatters her slumber. Her heart catches, and, she suddenly remembers with the beat of it : she's still alive. And Lilith had used that word. LIFE. Does Lilith have one, too? Can Lilith die, after all? Regina thinks, REACHES, desperately, quickly. If Lilith can die, she needs a worthwhile reason to risk this. Women can't afford to act for free.

❛ You have magic. ❜ LIKE MOTHER, ONLY MORE POWERFUL. ❛ Isn't there a spell you could cast ━━ something ━━ anything ━━ couldn't you bring someone back from the dead? ❜

She's spit it out in a nervous push, MIGHT AS WELL, and she stops for a long moment. Regina knows the weight of her ask. She's thinking of Daniel, now. Daniel, her only escape, his heart crushed, his body lying buried beneath a lone grave she's crafted with love upon a mound behind Cora's prying eyes.

❛ Please. I'll do anything. ❜ It's a foolish ask, Regina knows ; it's girlish and teenage, but it's one she needs to make. Daniel is unattached, perhaps even aligned with Heaven. Satan would not touch him because of this, and safety beside a man is the only safety Regina can ever grasp. Her only out has reduced her to begging, and worse, to LILITH ━━ and she can feel her Mother's hatred tearing at her from the inside for this. CLEAN YOURSELF UP. WIPE AWAY YOUR TEARS. Regina blinks, and a tear falls ; she's unclean, unclean, unclean, and Lilith will not appreciate this. But she lets it fall ; ignoring is the most powerful thing she can do. She pushes through. SHE IS NOT WEAK. She wants to scream it at Lilith. Please believe it.

❛ I can tell you anything. Anything that I know. ❜ Regina knows what she's implying here, and her chest hurts because MOTHER, MOTHER, MOTHER. But it's all she has. ANYTHING I KNOW ABOUT CORA, I CAN TELL YOU. YOU CAN HAVE POWER OVER HER. YOU CAN FEED YOURSELF ━━ SATIATE YOURSELF WITH THE BLOOD OF THIS RIVALRY. Lilith is a bloodthirsty woman and surely she'll hear this. Like Cora, Lilith enjoys the taste of wounds ; knows they smell of power. Regina knows how power smells, and it makes her sick. But Lilith ... her only hope is Lilith.

regina's little " i'll be good " in the stable boy breaks my heart so much, because it's just so apparent she's been through pain with cora so many times before and been beaten into this submissive radicalization. she knows the depths of cora's physical and emotional abuse, and she never wants to experience it again. i mean look at her, just from getting restrained by cora's magic, she's so terrified :(

Vulnerability. It's never been Regina's forte. And here it is, again, staring her point blank as it's always done. It never seems to leave her alone, no matter how it's been rejected. It's a beacon of challenge, resurfaced, over and over, ramming itself into Regina's ribcage, leaving her bleeding on the floor as she ignores it evermore. PUNISHMENT, PAIN, DEATH. That's all vulnerability ever gives her. Regina wonders if other people have the same experience. They must not, she has decided, because they show it so often. Regina has conquered men, armies, realms. She's taken ━━ SLAUGHTERED, EVEN ━━ kingdoms and thrones. And yet, it's vulnerability, in the end, that taunts her ; it's always vulnerability. The unconquerable demon.

But she's trying.

Some people wear vulnerability like armor ; like a weapon. It's a knife upon their frame. Emma can do this. And, from Emma, vulnerability is ... tolerable. Regina can't swallow it, but she can sit beside it. Emma's vulnerable, but she's not indulgent. She's brutal and an adversary with it. It works, sometimes, and Regina's learned not to discount it as this has lost her battles before. Regina won't admit it, but it's a vulnerability that makes her pause ; look twice. Some people make their vulnerability others' vulnerability too ━━ enmesh themselves in its sharp, poignant THRUST. And somehow, DESPITE WHAT IT HAS DONE TO HER, their vulnerability seems to build an army. Snow White, Prince Charming, Henry, they can do this. Regina, however, has only ever had her army squandered utilizing it. Smothered. Killed. What is vulnerability to her in the face of poison ; of revenge?

It's nothing. Not even Henry. And there's the rub.

Regina affords Emma a glance. Ending up alone. It's not an unfamiliar void in her own dreams, waking her from a restless slumber in a feverish, breathless panic. For a moment, there is a weight between them that comes only from what must be understanding. Regina stares out and away, then, resting her weary gaze behind the bar but seeing only her nightmares.

Regina knows Emma, at least a little bit, now. She knows this is not an easy admission for someone like Emma. AND TO ME? What is Emma gaining, Regina wonders, showing her underside like this? Is it a mockery? Regina won't play into that if it is, and she wonders. Briefly.

But she is also tired.

Finally, without meeting Emma's eyes again, for fear of not wanting to look away this time, she speaks, her voice quiet. ❛ It's not so hard. Being alone. ❜ The silence chokes you, though, and replays over and over what you have done. But Regina doesn't say this. If Emma is afraid of it, Emma must know.

Looking back at her again at last, Regina furrows her brow, frowning, and straightens her posture, more stiff now, more defensive. ❛ What are you scared of, anyhow? You have a family. ❜
