i’ve been wanting to make a place to enjoy my writing with other DnP people (are we still called Phan??)
i’m currently writing The Woods series. sooooo…
expect chapter updates, little snippets, behind the scenes stuff, and me talking about these characters way too much.
hopefully some of you end up loving them as much as i do. 🤍

Ellie had fallen asleep against Mark’s chest, one tiny fist tangled in the collar of his shirt and her cheek pressed beneath his chin. She had been fighting the nap for nearly an hour, furious every time Mark tried to move her toward the cot, but now she was completely still apart from the occasional twitch of her fingers.
Phil glanced over from the other end of the sofa. “You know she has a cot.”
“She knows too,” Mark said quietly. “She thoroughly disagrees with it.”
Phil smiled and returned his attention to the television. Some terrible film was playing, though neither of them had followed enough of it to know what was happening. Emille had gone to bed almost an hour ago after making Mark promise he would not let Ellie sleep like that all night.
For a while, the room stayed quiet.
Then Mark said, “You’d take care of her, wouldn’t you?”
Phil looked over again. Mark was watching Ellie rather than him, one hand spread carefully across her back.
“What?”
“If something happened to me and Emille.”
Phil laughed before he realized Mark was serious. “What would happen? You’re twenty-six.”
“I know.”
“You’re asking like you’re about to be sent off to war.”
“Phil.”
Something in Mark’s voice made Phil stop smiling. He sat up slightly, watching as Mark adjusted the blanket around Ellie’s shoulders without waking her.
“You’re already down on the paperwork,” Mark said. “We sorted it when she was born. But paperwork is paperwork, and I need to know you actually mean it.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“Because it’s different when you say it.”
Phil looked at Ellie. She had only recently learned to walk, though walking mostly involved taking three uncertain steps before falling into the nearest piece of furniture. Mark had already bought her a pair of yellow wellies she would not fit into for months. Emille had filled an entire kitchen drawer with cups, spoons, and plastic bowls that all seemed to have very specific purposes.
Nothing was going to happen to them. Mark was twenty-six. Emille was healthy. Ellie would grow up with both of them fussing over shoes and school applications and whatever else parents spent their time worrying about.
Mark finally looked at him. “You promise?”
Phil smiled, because the answer seemed obvious and the question still felt faintly ridiculous.
“I promise.”
Mark held his gaze for another moment before nodding, apparently satisfied. Then Ellie stirred against him, her face crumpling as she woke, and Mark immediately blamed Phil for ruining the best nap she had taken all week.
The conversation ended there.
They moved on with their day.

He had left the living room early, saying he was tired.
He was. He was tired of holding in this crush.
So, he did the least sensible thing, and texted PJ

Still In The Woods - Chapter 17
By eight on Thursday morning, Camera Six had already ruined Phil’s day.
It had stopped recording at 2:14.
Not fully.
That would have been easier.
Instead, it had recorded the same fox for nearly six hours.
Same paw raised.
Same eyes.
Same leaf caught near the edge of the frame.
Phil clicked through the images again.
2:14. Fox.
2:15. Fox.
2:16. Fox.
Fox.
PJ leaned over the back of his chair. “It’s an artistic choice.”
“It’s broken.”
“Both can be true.”
Phil clicked again.
Still fox.
“Maybe it didn’t move.”
“For six hours.”
“Committed fox.”
Phil looked over his shoulder.
PJ held coffee in one hand and half a cereal bar in the other. The wrapper was folded around the bottom like that stopped crumbs going everywhere.
It did not.
One landed beside Phil’s keyboard.
Phil pointed at it.
PJ looked down.
“That was already there.”
“It fell out of your food.”
“Allegedly.”
Phil brushed it onto the floor.
PJ stared at him.
“What?”
“There’s a bin.”
“Susan would eat it.”
“Susan isn’t here.”
PJ looked toward the hallway.
“Are we sure?”
Phil turned back to the monitor.
Camera Six had always been difficult.
Not technically.
Cameras could not be difficult.
They did not have opinions.
Or grudges.
Or an understanding of the worst possible moment to stop working.
Phil knew that.
Mostly.
Camera Six had still recorded twelve hours of a leaf hitting the lens, failed during the one week they needed clear footage from the northern boundary and survived being knocked sideways into a ditch.
Now it had found a fox and apparently decided that was enough wildlife for one night.
Phil opened the equipment record.
Battery changed three weeks ago.
Seal replaced last month.
Mount adjusted after Rowan said it leaned left.
It had not leaned.
The tree had grown strangely.
Different problem.
PJ finished the cereal bar.
“You’re doing the face.”
“What face?”
“The Camera Six face.”
“I don’t have one.”
“You do.”
Phil opened the next folder.
Forty-three photographs of empty grass.
Then nothing.
“It needs replacing.”
“You say that every time.”
“Because it does.”
“And every time, you fix it.”
“Unfortunately.”
PJ sat on the edge of the spare desk.
There were three desks in the workroom now.
Phil’s near the window.
Rowan’s covered in coloured labels and batteries.
The third mostly belonged to PJ’s coffee.
Helen had tried making a rule about drinks near equipment.
PJ moved his mug five centimetres away and claimed that counted.
Phil enlarged the last image.
Grass.
A dark shape near the bottom.
Probably the housing.
Maybe the mount.
“We need to go out.”
PJ looked at the clock.
8:27.
“Helen said route work after ten.”
“This isn’t route work.”
“What is it?”
“Camera Six.”
PJ nodded solemnly.
“Emergency.”
“Exactly.”
“It’s a camera.”
“It isn’t recording.”
“Tragic.”
Phil pushed his chair back.
The wheel caught on the uneven floor.
He stood and reached for his coat.
PJ stayed where he was.
“You brought lunch.”
Phil looked toward the hooks.
His blue lunch bag sat underneath his coat.
Zipped.
Two sandwiches.
An apple.
Two cereal bars.
Crisps.
Dan had checked.
Not obviously.
He had stood beside the table while Phil packed it and said nothing until Phil put the apple in. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finish the chapter on AO3!!

I keep second guessing myself on the timeline, even though i have it written out.
I’m noticing that I am writing a specific character, almost like a teenager with freedom for the first time..
and that is kinda what he is. :)
