Between the first century CE and the 400s CE, the Mesoamerican city we call Teotihuacan was the largest urban center in the Americas. It housed over 100,000 people at its peak. They fed so many residents using domesticated maize. But the Americas had few animals to domesticate – just dogs and, far to the south of Teotihuacan, llamas. How did they ensure Teotihuacan’s residents had sufficient protein? The answer, it turns out, is rabbits. They systematically bred leoprids – especially cottontails and jackrabbits – for food, fur, and other products.
