JACK ABBOTT: CASSIE CAREFULLY STITCHES JACK’S WOUND WITH STEADY HANDS.
‘jesus, what’d you do this time?’ cassie didn’t smile because she thought it was funny jack had hurt himself. she smiled because jack was allowing her to take the suture kit from his hands and let her stitch him up instead of doing it himself. the doctors around here - especially the attendings - they didn’t like asking for help. lucky for jack, he didn’t have to ask. cassie was readying the needle before he could say anything, quickly cleaning the wound before glancing over jack’s bare shoulder to look at the side of his face. ‘it’s bad enough we have civilians coming in with gashes like this. now my superior’s bleeding all over the er?’ now she was joking, hands unshaking as she positioned herself to begin. ‘sure you don’t want anything else to numb the pain? you know this is gonna hurt like a bitch,’ @pittvet.
MICHAEL ROBINAVITCH: TXT. I CAN’T HELP YOU IF YOU DON’T LET ME.
( SMS ; DOCTOR ROBBY. ) are you fucking kidding me, robinavitch? ( SMS ; DOCTOR ROBBY. ) one, i didn’t ask for any help, so i’m not sure wtf you’re talking about. ( SMS ; DOCTOR ROBBY. ) and two, you can’t even help yourself, so. ( SMS ; DOCTOR ROBBY. ) thanks, but i think i’ll pass on a ride on the savior complex train. @robinav1tch.
JACK ABBOTT: I’M GOING TO TELL YOU WHAT I TELL EVERY YOUNG DOCTOR. HOPEFULLY YOU’LL BE THE FIRST TO LISTEN. ON YOUR DAY OFF, GET AS A FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE AS YOU CAN. GO SOMEPLACE WHERE YOU FEEL MOST LIKE YOURSELF.
it seemed to be quite the tradition, telling new doctors what they should do to take care of themselves. even residents who were slightly ahead of ashton in their program were telling them how real burnout was, how they should leave the patients and notes and trauma at the hospital instead of taking it home with them. but no one ever seemed to follow their own advice. especially not the attendings around here, which is why jack’s words made them huff out a laugh as they draped their stethoscope back around their neck, holding either side, thumbs fidgeting with the rainbow beads they adorned it with. ‘and who told you that when you first started?’ if ashton wasn’t the first doctor he’s told it to, then he’d probably heard it before. and someone told it to the doctor who told him, and back and back throughout every er that had ever existed. weary glance was given to their superior. the dark circles under their eyes told how tired they were, but just like everyone else, they never admitted it aloud. ‘it’s not that i don’t appreciate the sentiment. but you’re basically saying pot, meet kettle here, and so i can’t really take it in, y’know what i mean?’ @pittmash.
"Time wasn't right. It was moving too fast. And then I was 19. And then I was 20."

TRINITY SANTOS: YOU OKAY?
jesus, it was always that question. maybe said in different formats, but the are you okay's were getting old. he didn't look up immediately, focus kept on the chart in front of him, his pen scratching out a final note with a deliberate sound. for some, the sounds of the ptmc were starting to fade into a dull roar ; for robby, they were always a cacophony in his ears, a form of tinnitus nothing could fix. when his gaze finally shifted to trinity, the exhaustion was clear in the bags under his eyes and the wrinkles etched into his skin, but he wouldn't admit to anyone that he wasn't okay. not even himself, apparently. 'why does everyone keep asking me that?' tone was humored yet gravelly as the attending leaned back, his chair giving a sympathetic groan as he rubbed a hand over his features. 'i'm upright and i haven't lost my badge, so i'll call that a win for the day,' silent sigh was given before robby glanced at trinity again, a small gleam of sincerity present in his eyes. 'you?' @traumedical.
SAMIRA MOHAN: I TAKE IT YOU'RE FREE NOW?
mel shifted her weight, head moving until she could place eyes on who was speaking to her. she paused, blinking slowly as samira's voice registered, pulling mel back from the mental checklist of patient charts and pending labs she was still subconsciously processing. a small flicker of a smile touched her lips before she adjusted her glasses and finally replied to the other's question. 'free is a relative term in this building,' she leaned against the nurse's station, turned at an awkward angle that wasn't completely open to anyone, but which wasn't closed to samira as they talked, either. 'but i've officially handed off the last of my trauma updates, so, technically - yes, i'm free,' she nodded once, eyes moving to sit just below samira's own. 'what did you need?' @savingthrcw.
MICHAEL ROBINAVITCH: THIS ISN'T MY FIRST 48 HOUR SHIFT . . . I'LL BE FINE. PROMISE.
the laugh that accompanied robby's words was familiar. the don't worry about me, i'm good, there's no need chuckle. ashton had heard it from him a number of times, but they supposed it's escaped their own throat a time or two. lips purse a bit as they fidget with their badge, looking sternly over robby's face, though their expression was mostly inscrutable. 'you're so full of shit, robinavitch,' ashton finally replied, sniffing before pushing the food further toward him over the counter. it wasn't much - just a protein bar and a banana they wouldn't be eating, though it came out of their haphazardly packed lunchbox - but they could tell robby was hungry, even if he couldn't, or didn't want to admit it. 'being hangry is a choice, y'know that, right? eat something or i'm putting you in the corner. a time out might do the doctor some good,' @robinav1tch.
