Ethics in pharmacy
In the field of medicine, ethics play a critical part in a person’s professional life. It is therefore understandable that these moral principles govern in pharmacy, too. Image Source: politico.com
Educational institutions like American University of Health Sciences aim to not only teach the subject of pharmacy to its students, but to inculcate in them the values and ethics required of caring professionals. One of Aristotle’s teachings focused on ethical decision-making as the application of a set of virtues. With a person’s well-being as the principal concern, virtues serve as a compass not only on how to make decisions, but also on how to live one’s life. Among these virtues are truth, loyalty, and trustworthiness. According to Aristotle, a person should not just conveniently pick on one or several virtues. The person should try to live out all of the virtues. Image Source: auhs.edu
Later in life, when students have long graduated and are well into their practice, there will come a point when they would be facing dilemmas at work. For instance, would it be moral to give in to persuasions – no matter the cause – for medicines without prescription? Would it be correct to put loyalty to the employer over the trustworthiness that is due to the patient? Is it ethical to give out doctors’ information to manufacturers and other third party providers? A strong Christian values education provider should be able to equip its students with the right lessons to prepare them for the realities of life. Image Source: about.com

AUHS research: A pursuit of advancement in healthcare science
To be globally competitive, academic institutions big and small must invest on research studies and facilities that are contributory to civil society and student excellence. Image Source: auhs.edu
Seeing a brighter future in this field is the American University of Health Sciences, which is a Christian-based minority-serving university that educates students for careers in the healthcare profession. Proving the school’s global competitiveness is University Professor Dr. Okezie I. Aruoma of the Pharmaceutical Sciences department, who was named one of the fellows of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). Image Source: auhs.edu
Dr. Aruoma, who also serves as the Associate Dean of Research and Global Affairs at the University’s School of Pharmacy, has conducted studies focused on developing biomarkers and iphytoceutical or nutraceutical agents (from fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants) that could provide early diagnostic and preventive treatment for diseases with overt inflammation. His research could apply to studies about diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s. In addition, his research has provided evidence in a CNS model that neurotransmitter systems are differentially affected by beta-amyloid-aggregates, which may benefit from antioxidant strategies. Emphasizing the values of faith in God, love of humankind, and life-based education, the lauded faculty of the university regularly initiates clinical and field studies in the pursuit of the advancement of healthcare science. In addition, the institution prepares clinical studies for outside organizations, which are venues for unmatched involvement for students. AUHS: Nursing future leaders in the pharmaceutical industry
Image Source: sciencedaily.com The pharmaceutical industry is snapping out of its struggles. It is now emerging as one of the most competitive industries worldwide, providing jobs and opportunities for people who have the love for medicine and healthcare. In fact, it is reported that the pharmaceutical market is anticipated to more than double to US$1.3 trillion by 2020 as a result of increasing chronic conditions around the globe. As the world of pharmacy adjusts to a demanding future, spots for pharmaceutical leaders are yet to be filled. Droves of professionals have to be taken in to study, implement, research, market, and create the most urgent products. Proving that there are promising people in the field is a graduate student in Clinical Research from the American University of Heath Science named I-Chun Hou, who had the results of her thesis published in the prestigious World Journal of Gastroenterology.
Image Source: auhs.edu A Master’s of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) graduate, I-Chun Hou, co-authored a scientific thesis titled “Green tea and the risk of gastric cancer: epidemiological evidence,” which studies the ability of green tea and its bioactive phytoconstituents to reduce the risk of stomach cancer. The study of Hou is part of the University’s MSCR program that requires a thesis prior to graduation, wherein students may choose to further their research in efforts to have it published.
