WIP Wednesday

It's time for another snippet from In the Lost Myth of True Love!

It’s not hard to find Polaris- in this time of war it’s easy for Alex to follow the carnage in her wife’s wake. The closer she comes to the warriors’ camp the more upset she becomes. She has been stuck in the palace, trapped there in pain and lonely, while Polaris sits armorless by a warm fire laughing loudly with Terry by her side, the women leaning affectionately against each other. The sound of her approaching hoofbeats must be noticed by the women because Polaris stands, glowing green, Terry beside her, eyes a more poisonous shade of green as her voice carries.  “Another scouting party? Has Emma not yet learned her lesson?”  Alex dismounts awkwardly, swallowing a whimper when her feet hit the ground. “Not a scout.”  Polaris freezes, the halo around her flickering until it goes dark. “Alex?”  Terry’s guard stays up, eyes continuing to glow. “What are you doing here?”  Alex steps forward, grateful for the steady gait of her horse to keep her upright as she walks slowly down the hill towards them. “I’m here to be with my wife.”  Polaris looks conflicted, still keeping her distance even if she uses her gift to help steady Alex- using her gift for the other woman in a manner so foreign to how Erik had used it against her. “You shouldn’t be here. Your pains- you don’t have your gift. You shouldn’t be here.”  Alex feels like the air’s been punched out of her lungs. “I can help-”  “How?” Terry asks, right hand resting over the hilt of the dagger strapped to her hip. “You can barely stand, you can’t fight, you lost your gift- you can’t help. You weren’t asked to come for a reason Alex.”  Alex glares. She’d figured out after Scott had left that Terry didn’t like her very much. It had been apparent, with her sneaking around with Jamie at all hours, and obvious attempts to avoid interacting with her, and the way in which she had never gone along with the name that Alex had given to her wife. There was jealousy there- Alex could tell. Alex takes a step forward again walking towards Polaris, and finally, finally is able to touch her wife. Soft hands running gently over the scarred and scabbed skin of her love’s arms. She takes another step towards Terry, refusing to let go of Polaris’ wrists. “This doesn’t concern you Theresa, this is a matter between my wife and I.” She pitches her voice low in a way that might have been threatening if not for the waiver in her voice as another sharp pain crashed through her. “If I had my gift-”  “But you don’t.” Polaris says softly, stepping in between the two women. “Terry’s right Alex. This isn’t your world, go back to the palace. You’ll be safe there.”  “No.” Alex pushes further into Polaris’ hold. For weeks now she’s been sure that if she could just touch her again, that the pain would stop. But as her chest tightens, as her throat burns with unshed tears, she finds that it all hurts worse. “It’s not home. Everyone’s gone. You need to come back with me. Make things go back to normal.”  “Darling,” Polaris whispers. “I am a warrior and you are my wife. This is normal. This is how the world works. If the palace isn’t a home, then make it one. This is where I belong, on the field in battle. You’ve known that since we were children.”  Alex breaks her composure and sobs, fat salty tears streaming down her cheeks as she collapses against her wife. “You need to come home.”  Polaris feels stiff against her, and the embrace she wraps Alex in is awkward and halting. She strokes the other woman’s hair like someone soothing a wounded animal- empathetic by nature yet afraid of the creature’s bite. “I’m sorry Alex, but I cannot protect you and Westchester. You need to go home.”  Polaris holds Alex until the woman stops crying and looks to Terry awkwardly for direction when she’s forced slowly to the ground to continue holding her wife as Alex falls into a fitful sleep.  Terry sighs, taking Alex’s horse by the reins and guiding it to graze alongside the chariot’s horses. “As soon as she’s awake she’s leaving. We have to move on to the plain near Cuailnge.”

Steve Rogers is dead. All that remains of him is an empty uniform and the home he left behind. As Bucky looks through the mementos his mentor kept, he confronts the parts of Steve's life he wasn't around for and wonders about his place in it. (Or the missing scenes between Captain America Vol. 5 #33 and #34.)

Undying Avengers Issue 4: the Lady's Favor by Conner Thrakaboom and Gene @avengerphobic

Snarls and howling fill the air as Monica and Dane are overwhelmed by wolves. It is a wild hunt, unbearably loud and unbearably violent. Monica rises above the violence and fires shots at them, but for every one she and Dane fell, another ten take their place.

Monica desperately tries to wrack her mind for memories she just can’t reach. They are on the tip of her tongue, phantom thoughts that she hasn’t used in years. “I know I know a way to deal with this magic. I just need to think,” she says as she lasers another wolf down, who yelps. 

“Can you think faster? I’m getting overwhelmed here!” Dane yells up as he is getting- literally- dogpiled. 

A wolf claws his belly and hot blood blossoms on his tunic. It’s nothing to him, he knows pain, but he cries out anyway from the shock of it and stabs through the wolf. “It’s like they’re targeting us specifically!”

Reed knew what people thought of him and Sue. He knew people thought he was undeserving of someone so kind and beautiful. He knew people saw his mannerisms as cold and uncaring, rather than just the way he expressed himself. He couldn’t change himself, not even for Sue. But she loved him despite his oddities. 

And he loved her more than anything. He would burn the universe down for her and she would never let him. That was why he loved her.

A Semblance Of My Soul

            “You can’t be serious,” Tony says to Steve, leaning forward with both palms on the opposite side of the counter from Steve. “Are you a child?”

            “No.” Steve takes another sip of his coffee and does not look up from his phone. “You are. I’m just doing what needs to be done.”

            “You had no right!” Tony raises his voice and smacks his hand down on the counter. “I made my choice and I knew I could [REDACTED] in time. How do you still not trust me, after all this time?”

  “Could you pass the salt?” says Simon.

            Hank is staring at Simon. He lowers his cutlery and says, “That is all you have to say to me tonight? Truly, Simon?”

            Simon stiffens slightly. “What else do you want me to say?” he says acidly. “Pretty sure we said everything we wanted to last night.”

            Hank growls low in his throat. “I want you to say something. Anything else.” He shakes his head and leans forward slightly. “Are we really to leave things like this between us? Fraught with anger and harsh words?”

Gaza drabble for @kitausuret

She requested Wanda and the female compatriot of my choosing!

“Jan, you cannot just buy me everything in the store that I like,” Wanda said, following her girlfriend up to the counter.

“Nonsense. Of course I can. I’m doing it right now,” Jan said. She held up a pair of earrings. “What about these? These would look cute on you.” 

“Janet. The environment.” 

Janet pouted. “Let me spoil you.” 

“You can buy me dinner,” Wanda said. 

“I was already going to do that.” 

“You can kiss me.” 

Janet smiled and tucked a dark curl behind Wanda’s ear. “I’m always going to do that,” she said before kissing her softly. 

Of course Janet bought her the magazine with their kiss on the cover. Wanda kept it framed beside her bed.

Undying Avengers Issue 3: Breadcrumb Trail by Conner Thrakaboom and Gene @avengerphobic

“If whoever this Fairy Queen is had access to Otherworld, why would she use Thelius? Why not some magic beast?” Jackie asks, shrugging. “We don’t have anything to combat magic, really. Even the Ebony Blade is kinda shit at it.”

From behind her, the ghost of Sir Percy appears just to glower at Jackie’s affront to the Blade. Faiza blinks at the sight of the specter. (Dane and Jackie, the only others who can see him, routinely ignore him).

“I’m sorry. Who are you again?” Monica asks, her voice dripping with annoyance at this nobody shutting down their only lead. She turns to point at Dane with a frown on her beautiful features. “The last time you gave some random kid your sword he got possessed, grew a hundred feet tall, and started eating souls.”

The ghost of Sir Percy shakes in anger at Monica’s flippant remark before he dissipates. 

Dane’s face falls as he remembers Sean Dolan. Jackie can’t end up like Sean, he thinks. Of course, Jackie had the blood ties that Sean had lacked, but… He can’t allow it.

“Jacks is my daughter,” Dane says, sheepish at the fact he hadn’t been able to bring it up before.

The summer sun was warm against Clint's skin, the morning breeze keeping it a lovely warmth before the excruciating heat of midday. Most of the West Coast Avengers had cleared out of the compound for a few days, busy with their own projects, but Clint wasn't completely alone. 

“Good morning!” Greer's cheerful voice greeted him as she stepped out onto the patio. 

Clint felt his shorts tighten. Greer was wearing a pair of shorts that hugged her hips deliciously, showing off the long line of her legs, and a cropped tank top that left nothing to the imagination. It wasn't as if Clint hadn't seen it all before - Greer fought in a bikini, for goodness sake - but that didn't mean it wasn't still a nice view.
