NOTABLE CHANGES FROM 2012 TO THE TIMELINE THEY WERE PULLED FROM: Jason trying to kill Tim for being his replacement? Didn’t happen. His anger was more directed toward himself for not being there to train his younger brother. He became protective more than anything else because he didn’t want what happened during his time as Robin also happening to Tim. Another thing, I tend to play Jason as suffering from mild hallucinations but they’re usually only triggered in very specific situations. He used to be on medication for it but since landing in New York he hasn’t been taking them. I also give Jason a German Shepherd named Darcy. He’s named after the character in Pride & Prejudice since that’s Jason’s favorite book. These are my only notable changes from the comics! “Good motto to live by.” Jason has always been the type to stand up to authority. He didn’t care who they are. Especially when it comes to political or law enforcement. He might always have an issue with the rich — an old bitterness as he remembers that they won’t save anyone except themselves. It shouldn’t be like that. Jason stands guard while Pamela tends to the planet. He might not know how to take care of plants but can make sure nobody bothers her while she protects the one they’ve found among tragedy.

jon always tried to remain optimistic, his parents had taught him from an early age to always face everything with the best attitude possible, but this situation was clearly bumming him out. new york was incredibly overwhelming, even more so than gotham which he had grown slightly accustomed to (he would never be fully at home in that cold city, never), forcing him to tune out his super hearing. “seriously, how many cats need saving in this city?” he mumbled to himself, not really expecting anyone to hear him. he was glad he had a better hold of his powers now, a few years ago this situation would’ve lead to a very explosive sensory overload, and now he could at least tune his hearing out. it made him feel guilty though, knowing any serious situation could pop up in a minute. “i don’t know what to do,” he huffed a little to loudly, possibly catching the attention of someone near him.

“Far too many.” Jason mumbles in response. He knows that this isn’t really his place to be listening in on what Jon was saying. It seems to be more like the boy was thinking out loud but it seemed okay to answer his question. The whole situation is innocent enough. Although refusing cats isn’t usually on his list of things to do but Jason also never leaves an animal behind if he comes across one on any of his missions. “Although there’s crime everywhere in this city. It’s just as bad as Gotham.” It’s just that the villains were different and the atmosphere wasn’t as gloomy. He misses the comfort of the familiar but there’s nothing that can be done about that now. The second oldest Wayne child just sighs. He hates this place mostly. “If you want advice or whatever then I don’t mind listening. What’s wrong, kid?”

STATUS: closed starter for bruce wayne WHEN: april twenty-seventh, the anniversary of jason’s death WHERE: the penthouse

Laughter echos through the penthouse. It leaves Jason frozen in place just staring down the hall. One of the doorways remained open and light from inside the space spills out into the darkness. He tenses up, fingers gripping tightly onto the armrest of the couch. This time of year is really hard for him and since he’s off his meds . . . it was better to stay with his father for a few days. He didn’t realize how bad his mind has gotten until seeing a silhouette of the clown in the light and he sees himself too, only for a moment. The laughter continues and only getting louder. He can see the outline of a crowbar lifted up and hitting him right in the spine. This memory will always be so vivid that it only makes sense for his madness to use the tragedy for his hallucinations. How cruel to think your murderer is in the apartment with you. Jason knows this isn’t real but that doesn’t make it any less difficult. This is the anniversary of his death and so a few tears fall down his cheeks while he’s watching the shadows reenact his demise. He seems to have lost track of time. Only breaking out of it when Darcy sits in front of Jason, resting his head on his knees while looking up at him with concern. It takes a few minutes but it’s quiet again in the apartment and the clown is gone. He’ll cherish the peace while it lasts.

This day is hard on his family too, especially for Bruce. He didn’t see him standing there, not sure how much of his episode he saw. He was too busy leaning forward with his head pressed into his dog’s fur to notice anyone else was actually in the room just yet. It takes some time before looking up finally when feeling more calm. “Dad? I don’t want to be alone right now . . . will you sit with me?” No patrol tonight, just staying where he’s safe and nothing can hurt him. The other side of the couch is free and spending some time together will do them both some good considering what happened around on this day when Jason was only fifteen. Maybe they can watch a movie or something.

“Remember when you used to read to me? I never told you this but those moments were my favorite. I would always eat an extra serving of vegetables at dinner so Alfred wouldn’t bother us.” Truthfully it all meant more to Jason than any outing as Robin. He’s being sentimental tonight but he deserves to be vulnerable considering what today means.

𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 with silently falling apart. performing is in his blood, an art that he has taught to others - a sharp pang in his chest follows the memory of standing with jason at galas before his murder, showing him how to lie his way out of small talk, to use his youth to his advantage with wide eyes and occasional false tears. but it’s more than that, truthfully. dick has a series of masks, little shifts, less jarring than bruce’s personas, harder to detect and strikingly effective. he uses them to conceal weaknesses. he uses them to conceal himself.

𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒 as he drops lightly down from the roof, bright blue stripes on his suit burning in the night. eyes glitter behind his domino mask as he makes the easy switch from nightwing to older brother, seriousness softening, stiffness hidden. he watches jason beat on the criminal for a moment, then says quietly, voice warm, “ and here i thought i was gonna have to pick a fight … looks like hood’s already on it, huh ? “

There’s never a moment that crosses Jason’s mind where he begins to contemplate if he’s being too harsh with the criminals that plague these streets. New York definitely isn’t Gotham but it sure has just as much crime littering through it. He doesn’t understand how a city filled with so many caped crusaders allows this much scum to still breathe. Jason isn’t killing anyone but that doesn’t mean a few bones aren’t broken to make people talk. It’s just one man, someone who’s been robbing local businesses in the area based off of his research. Considering everything that has happened recently with the Earthquakes, some of the thieves have tried asking advantage of everyone being distracted. Unfortunately for him this isn’t his lucky night. Jason has the man pinned to the ground after a few punches sent the criminal to the ground. Blood dripping down his nose, possibly broken, and several other visible injuries. He tries crawling away and Jason pulls a knife out, about to throw it at him to pin him to the ground underneath their feet. It has been done before but the sound of a familiar voice stops him. He just places a foot on the thief’s back instead and puts the knife away.

“You’re late if you wanted in on this, Nightwing.” It takes one swift kick to the back of the man’s skull to knock him unconscious, perfecting the art of making sure that nobody dies to his blows but will be injured enough the next morning in their jail cell that they’ll think twice about doing their bullshit again. He turns around to look at his brother now, eyes widening underneath a helmet that conceals his identity. His hands pull it off, holding it for a moment as a red domino mask is revealed. White strands of hair fall in his face and blown with the wind. “When did you get here? I’ve been looking for you . . . searching endlessly.” He hates this place and not knowing where his family is has been devastating for Jason.

‘ and how has that worked out for your reputation ? ’ because like it or not , reputation matters thoroughly - and she’s simply lucky that she’s the one making or breaking them . ‘ better to be the whistleblower than the one blown on . ’ is that a real quote ? even if not , she supposes there’s a reason why she’s a writer . she is dating superman , though , so THAT can get in the way of her being safe or what not . ‘ agreed . ’

“I’ve learned how to put on a performance and make people at those events think I’m charming, so my reputation is fine. I was kept out of the media during my time of attending them regularly. My older brother usually did the talking.” Jason doesn’t need to get into his reasonings for disliking hanging around wealthy old men, not needing to have his traumas revealed to the world that describe his abandonment. He often was brought home after a few hours by Alfred during those early years. “Good idea.” Jason applauds her really for being the whistleblower. “I’m glad we can agree . . . if only there was evidence to support this assumption.”

bruce has been asked — bruce has himself wondered — if he regrets it. taking in jason. after all the pain it lead to, the too early grave, the violent return. maybe it’s selfish, but he can’t say he does. yes, it’s horribly selfish that he’d rather live in a world where he at least knows jason than one where he never did & somehow jason ended up happier for it. bruce has guilts, bruce has regrets — not being there for jason, not protecting him, not saving him will always be the worst of them. it will always be something that he cannot forgive himself for. but jason is his son. jason is his son, & having him in his life at all will always be a blessing. he could never regret that.

❝ we did, ❞ he says, & he’s a little bit glad that he doesn’t have to hold his gaze anymore, because the twist in his voice is already nearly enough to give him away, & he doesn’t know if he could bear that, right now. ❝ we tore the city apart trying to find you. ❞ he says we like it wasn’t him who had grabbed black mask by the collar, dangled him over the edge of a building, & demanded to know when he’d last dealt with red hood. like it wasn’t him who wouldn’t have dropped him, right, he wouldn’t have, but needed robin’s light hand on his shoulder to pull him back anyways. ❝ i was … ❞ scared, the truth is, but he says, ❝ worried. we all were. ❞

bruce squeezes his eyes shut for a moment when jason steps forwards, achingly still for a moment, & then he wraps his arms around his son, holds him close & refuses to let go. the paranoid part of him that has learned to equate touch with fighting be damned — he just holds him. ❝ it’s definitely not home, ❞ he agrees dryly, because his chest feels too tight to breathe & he needs to say something, something that makes him sound like he’s okay. thank god for the little mercies ; his voice doesn’t break. ❝ of course i will. just get me a list of the doctors you’ve tried already, & i’ll see what i can do from there. ❞ he’s been told that once he truly sets his mind on something he reaches a level of stubbornness that’s nearly unstoppable. he’s setting his mind on this.

Opportunities came in bounty ate getting adopted by Bruce, experiences never available to him finally in his grasp. Jason grew up in crime alley, the absolute worst side of their city. After Willis and Catherine died it felt like the system forgot all about him. He left everything behind, taking only what could be carried in one of his backpacks. He had Sparky at the time at least so living in the streets wasn’t so bad since they always had each other. He remembers sitting in the subway stations holding the old canine in his lap. Nobody gave him any money and just stepped over him without even a glance. He felt invisible most of the time and eventually stopped trying to get any real help. Which is when Jason started turning to the thieving skills taught to him at a young age. This kept him fed. Who knows what would have happened if left in that abandoned building for much longer? What new lows would the boy have reached toward? Bruce taking him in saved him from becoming something worse. He could finally attend school again and eat warm meals. He always tried to make it known how much he appreciated everything Alfred and his father did for him. The poor kid finally got to learn from history and art museums too, always keen on learning something new.

Sometimes Jason hallucinates and sees a younger version of himself . . . his way of trying to apologize to himself time and time and time again for what happened in that warehouse. He hasn’t done that while on his medication but now his mental state is slipping again without it. He never bothers anyone with any of this but his father knew about his struggles. One of the few who do outside a close, inner circle. Jason hates being a bother but it was about asking for help for once in his life. “I hope it isn’t strange to admit this but . . . that makes me feel better knowing you looked for me.” Jason wonders what lengths they all went to in search of him. It wasn’t like him to stay that quiet. “I’m sorry, dad. I don’t like making you worry. I just woke up here with no clue how it happened. I’ve been looking for you too . . . I kept hoping that you’d show up.”

There are words heavy on his tongue but left unsaid. Did you think I died again? I’d never make you go through that a second time.

Jason doesn’t realize how much the hug is needed until feeling the other’s arms wrap around him. His posture relaxes, a sign of trust, lifting his own arms to hug his father back. He just wants to stay like this for a while — being held by the man who raised him. “There’s just as much crime here as there is back home. We can stay busy until we figure out our situation.” His voice a little muffled while refusing to let go, hiding his face in Bruce’s shoulder for a moment. Jason stays like that until the mention of making a list of all the doctors he has already tried is asked of him. He pulls back a little to look up at Bruce again. “I can do that. I’ll bring it to you tomorrow. Thank you for helping me because you might have better luck than me in getting someone to cooperate.” This is a piece of vulnerability. He pulls back from the hug with a smile. “There is one good thing about this place . . . I got a dog. I named him Darcy after the character from my favorite book.” Always fond of Pride and Prejudice over any other novel.

‘ then perhaps you should shut your mouth , because anything said around a journalist can be twisted into a series of stories . ’ it was what she did best , and she gave no mercy : not even to superman himself , and she’s kissed him a few times ! brow raises at him , lets her lip quirk up . even new york hasn’t stunted her style - good . ‘ fair enough . and why’s that ? a bad past with them ? galas simply never end well in your story ? ’ that’s one option , she thinks . nods in agreement with his statement . ‘ absolutely . so you’re saying that there’s no possible way that the events of the gala could have happened naturally ? ’

There’s a hint of laughter leaving his lips, muffled by the sounds of people talking in the distance and moving the debris somewhere safer. “People have been trying to get me to shut my mouth for years. It hasn’t worked yet.” Jason might just be a little too stubborn since that would mean giving people what they want. “I like your style though. Twisting people’s words into stories is a badass way to earn a living.” He wonders what it’s like living life with an occupation that wasn’t so deadly. Jason is one of the best mercenaries around but growing up? He wanted to be an actor . . . but never got the chance to become part of the theatre world. “You could say that. I just don’t like the atmosphere and everyone is always so fake at those kind of things.” Jason sighs as he nudges a piece of rubble with his boot. “I suppose there’s a slim chance that those earthquakes were natural but New York isn’t known for getting them of that magnitude so I’m doubtful.”

“ it’s a blessing but a curse… ” the cat begins, gaze still fixated on the city around them. new york wasn’t all that different, many aspects the same but it’s no “ gotham. ” so many times selina wanted to escape the city, start life anew with nothing but the wind behind her. yet, no matter how many times she’d tried, she always found herself back atop the high rises, peering over the city as if its brand new. her interactions with jason are limited but she’s heard plenty about the masked vigilante, her own life of pain making her empathize with him. “ so enticing yet it holds so many painful memories. a part of me wants to hate it but i know better than that. ” is all she says on the matter, she’s not the one to do the whole ‘ talk about your feelings ’ thing. with a nod, she matches his grin. “ sounds delicious. count me in. ”

“No other place like it even if you go searching.” Jason has explored many different cites all around the world but none of them quite compare to the feeling being home gives him. People can say whatever they want about Gotham but it has a way of keeping you around. “Maybe after growing up in crime alley I just find everywhere else to be boring.” If he could survive living on his own there then anything else would be easy to do in comparison. He might not have much experience with Selina but there’s a level of respect there since they have some similar experiences. Why haven’t they bonded sooner? “I think it’s okay to hate parts of the city. I have painful memories too but surprisingly there’s good ones too.” He motions for the other to follow him, feet taking him toward where the motorcycle was parked a block over. Jason hops on and hands the helmet to Selina to use. He’ll be fine without one. “If I drive fast are you cool with it?” People drive at too much of a snail pace for him and the traffic in this city is the fucking worst.

❝ sure did. i think he just wanted me out of his hair. ❞ he chuckles, though really, it’s … not quite true. it seems like bruce approves of him, in his gruff, intimidating batman way, & roy has no idea what the hell he’s supposed to do with that. he hugs jason tightly, a little surprised by his willingness, but taking the opportunity while he has it. ❝ missed you, too. y’can’t get rid of me now, it’s about time for an outlaw reunion tour. ❞ if only for jason’s sake, because four months ? the brief mention is enough to get roy worried. it’d make anyone reach the end of their rope. he squeezes him, then pulls away, studying his expression. ❝ seriously, though. how’re you feeling ? ❞

These kind of gestures aren’t something Jason is always willing to give but none of that matters when it comes to Roy. He welcomes any hug when it comes from him. After working along for so long, the idea of having someone by his side is enough to make him feel excited again. It was one thing to work alone if you choose that path but being forced by being stranded somewhere unknown? Well . . . that’s something else entirely. He doesn’t want to let go but eventually does after giving Roy one last tight squeeze. “We’ve been through too much shit to get rid of each other. An Outlaw reunion tour sounds exactly what this city needs. I know of a mission that you might be interested in . . . I’ll tell you about it later.” He focuses instead on spending time with his best friend. He doesn’t want it to all be focused on their line of work. “I’m managing best I can. I feel great other than the fact I’ve been off my meds the entire time I’ve been stuck in this place. Which means I’m starting to have episodes again but it’s fine. My dad is helping me figure out that situation. How are you doing? How long have you been around?”

“You never know. – That’s a nice rifle though.” Sure, maybe now isn’t the time to be complimenting guns and striking up a conversation about them but having something in common with someone tends to put Bucky at ease. He won’t have to stress about making conversation with a stranger when they’re a mutual liking of something. “Extra hands are extra hands though, we could use them. We still have a lot of people trapped.” He goes onto explain, glancing down at the man’s hand. It’s the wrong hand. He doesn’t want to shake with this hand but the metal is meeting flesh in a quick shake. “Winter Soldier.” The words feel like they coat his mouth, sticky like molasses. He thinks of his time in Wakanda. Should he be going by White Wolf? That might make him feel a little better but he’s not sure it would stick. Either way, Bucky’s steps lead them towards the chaos. It’s really all hands on deck, it doesn’t matter where this guy is from. They just need to get these people to safety.

“You have good taste. I modified her myself.” Jason pulls it off his back for a moment to show it off, always proud of his weaponry. He doesn’t often met another who appreciates guns. He would cherish this moment even if not appropriate. When has he ever cared about doing the right thing? “You want to hold it?” He’s feeling generous, holding it in one hand with his finger off the trigger since it is loaded. His focus shifts toward shaking the metal hand first, lips quirking into a lopsided grin. He does’t even question the fact it wasn’t made of flesh, wasn’t his place, and besides his best friend also has a cybernetic limb. He’d punch anyone who dared make a comment or treated them different. “Winter Soldier is badass.” His hand is pulled back, following the other man toward the chaos. In the meantime of their journey to it he hands over the rifle for his new friend to check out. “She doesn’t make a sound when you pull the trigger and I even designed that scope myself to be better than anything on the market.”

steph gives him a wide grin, easily ignoring the guns & grumbling, which really could probably summarize a fair bit of their relationship. ❝ great to see you too, jay ! ❞ she chirps, only a tiny bit sarcastic. okay, like 75 % sarcastic. she follows him inside, glancing around the safehouse with a slightly critical eye. ❝ sweet digs. & yeah, sadly. it’s definitely not the way i wanted to spend my week, but … could’ve gotten worse, i found bruce pretty quickly. ❞ bruce is a total dick half the time, but. he’s more of a reassuring presence than she wants to admit. he’s at least good at lying about having a plan. ❝ did you stay safe, with the earthquake & all ? ❞ he doesn’t look injured, but. it’s best to ask, just in case.

“I didn’t even know you were here so you could have been anyone.” Jason glances over at Steph for any potential injuries to worry about. All the happenings in New York recently make him think about the worst scenarios his family could find themselves in. Maybe it has something to do with the man knowing what it’s like to be crushed by rubble during your last moments and wanting to save everyone from going through the same thing. The safe house is nice, always having taste to have the best. There were extra bedrooms and a fully functioning kitchen to name a few functions. “You’re free to come spend a night here if you ever need to. I’m quiet.” His hand rubs the back of his neck while thinking about the earthquake. “I was safe, it didn’t touch me. I was on patrol elsewhere at the time. I only came to investigate after it was done. Which is how I ended up running into Bruce. Did you stay safe?” It feels fair for Jason to ask the same question. He moves to the fridge and pulls out a beer in one hand, holding out the bottle to Steph. “Want one?”

felicia is all too familiar with the concept of taking things too far, her whole life she was constantly pushed to the edge until one day she snapped. she grew up in a world where all she knew of was being taken advantage of until what remained of her broke. life was cruel and the blonde was very familiar with that, it’d broke her in ways she’s sure she’d never recover from. she’s also one to bear countless scars that remind her of past memories she wishes to forget, but they’re apart of her, and she knows these will too. and maybe she deserves it, it’s some sort of payment for the sins she’s made but at this point felicia doesn’t care. every inch of her body burned whether it be from the burns or from being trapped under debris. either way, she gives the other a nod, too tired to let her pride argue. “ that’d be great, yeah. ” she says. “ is it far? my ankle got caught under the rubble and i’m not sure how long she’ll last with walking. ”

There was a time when Jason felt angry at the Lazarus Pit for taking away his scars. He earned those from the experience where the clown killed him in that warehouse. He got the chance to live with them for a while when Talia was nursing him back to health. He might have never fully recovered in that state of mind but at least his body looked the way it should. Maybe deep down that rage is still there but there’s nothing that can be done about it now. He has made plenty of new ones since that time of his life.
