The coronavirus is a global danger, and it deserves whatever attention is necessary for us to survive it. However, it casts a long shadow, and in that shadow, terrible things are occurring. Because of social isolation, rates of domestic abuse have been rising. School closures mean that low-income families are losing out on school lunches, a necessity for children. The homeless population is being left bereft of social services and shelter as volunteers stay home and shelters close. Panic buying means that necessary food and provisions are being concentrated primarily in the hands of those who can afford to buy mass amounts at one time. Don't forget that issues that existed before the coronavirus eclipsed media coverage are still existent. A Radio Free Asia article says that Uighur detainees have been relocated into the larger Chinese prison system and forced labor schemes in the interior of the country. ICE detention centers in the US are still overfilled with a total lack of care and services for the detainees. Those of us who are staying at home with a new dearth of time to be in front of our computers and phones have an opportunity here to continue to be a voice for the voiceless.
