her curiosity leads her steps more often than not. despite not having a driver’s license, minah finds herself with access to almost the whole city within a month with a single, unlimited pass to the subway system. she plays eeny meeny moe with the map while packed like a sardine in the train—after, of course, her work is done in the house—and chooses the stop closest to the university. in no more than a few stops, she emerges from the sliding doors and scales the steps to the ground level. the fresh air greets her like an old friend; a cool october breeze that follows her footsteps to the front steps of a large, beautiful building.
students wander in and out with textbooks clasped under their arms and laughter on their lips. minah watches with a matching smile on her lips, cheeks dimpling with excitement as she steps inside the revolving doors and promptly crashes into some unsuspecting student. “oh, i’m sorry.” the murmur spills from her mouth automatically, even as she pulls herself to sit on her hip on the floor, unfazed by the fall physically but all the same startled. “i wasn’t watching where i was going.”
