Lux is the personification of 1950s America, he’s this childish-looking and seemingly charming character who tried to intimidate the Doctor and Belinda with the threat of racist violence via police brutality, a villain that portrays the colorful appearance of the 1950s and its facade of manners while hiding a rotten racist core that seeks only control through violence, a god of light entered through a movie projector and he’s a walking talking projection of the 1950s and the more light that is shone on him the more his monstrous nature becomes apparent

And what needs to dissolve that is just light, so much light, the light and wonder of the universe, pouring in. Until all that small-minded meanness and pettiness which wants to grasp that selfishly through destruction is washed away in fulfilment and equilibrium - peace. Segregation benefits white people enormously, but at the cost of peace, necessitating a rictus grin and iron fist.

#notall80sfans Although this 80s fan liked it as a kid, defended the show at school when bullied for liking it, threw a shit fit online when the movie came out in 96, & then decided reluctantly when the show proper came back in 05 that "actually this is okay" -> "actually this is way better". The only remnant of old/kid fan Who that remains is a slight discomfort at the Doctor being sexual, or hot, or cool. But it absolutely doesn't stop me from loving the show or thinking every ep this year is shit hot.

Yeah sure Martha wasn’t mentioned. Nor Yaz, Ryan or Graham or other new series companions. They also didn’t die horribly or end weeping, and the past was referenced in the context of the Doctor’s trauma. While being mindful there are some people watching who weren’t watching in the noughties or last era.

Adric is an outlier in that his death (all the way back in a 1982 serial) was the single most tragic death that has happened to the Doctor’s companions in the show. (Yes there were a couple of very brief companions early on who died.) With Amy/Rory, Clara and Bill (and River Song), they all got the Elysian Fields treatment by Moffat. Adric just DIED, and he was a child. His death wasn’t even a huge tragic sacrifice, he was being kind of stupid. (The show wanted to kill him off as he was considered kind of annoying and the TARDIS was crowded.) It was really shocking for audiences at the time.

(Un)happily, there’s a hilarious sequel from a couple decades ago which helped classic fans process their collective trauma. I think it might also have gotten onto the Earthshock DVD?

Lol it’s also a common complaint in autism and ADHD spaces to see overgeneralising like this, either from neurotypicals, or autistics/ADHDers themselves. Part of it is confirmation bias and salience bias.

But yeah, especially when it’s a not-autistic/ADHD person doing it, it reflects the fact that they may have slapped a huge mental label on that person (rather than having integrated it into that person’s being) and now anything that reminds them of that person will also remind them of that huge mental label.

It’s so jarring to overhear a normie friend refer to me as “my lesbian friend” or “my autistic friend” or whatever when it’s not particularly relevant, like, mate, that is not the first or even tenth thing I think about myself when I wake up in the morning, but it obviously is the first thing you think of when you see me.

It’s really weird how easily fans use “I didn’t like that” to conclude “writer is lazy”. Like, you could just not like it and be okay with that.

The Doctor has done nothing in the last two decades but face their demons, run from their demons, try to distract from their demons, get more demons, face their demons, run from their demons, try to distract from their demons, get really mardy about it, rinse and repeat.

Could different choices have been made? Sure! Would I personally prefer more angst? Sure! Is RTD trying to pull off a tonal shift by wrapping up the baggage in three eps and putting a big glittery bow on it? Sure seems like it!

It’s a lot to call this creative decision “lazy” though. I don’t think anything RTD has done in his life seems lazy. The man is manifestly brimming with nervous energy and giddy inspiration. I don’t always like what he does but “couldn’t be bothered” is not something I’d be arrant enough to ascribe.

Having character development happen off screen is the definition of lazy writing I know fans struggle when there favourite shows face any mild form of criticism but that’s the reality

The doctor has just watch a large amount of the universe destroyed he still doesn’t know who he is yet so no “rehab off screen” is not good character development

Especially since this coming season seems a lot more party and lively focused this could have been the best time to face that trauma but also be a story of moving on

You’ve heard RTD talk about the audience perils of continuing on too much baggage from the past? From the absolute beginning he has been conscious about that, considering what happened with Ian Levine. I absolutely WANT in excruciating detail about 500 episodes about the fallout of the events from the Chibnall era. I would also like the Time War blow by blow and Big Finish at least is answering some of that. I would also like a pony. And the answer to the ultimate question: Doctor Who? But that is not the same as “immature” or “lazy”, and demanding the literal explicit excruciating version of what has had a great deal of shorthand and realities of pandemic production and producer passing, may risk being perceived as “immature” and “lazy” by those who do this highly skilled and difficult work for a living.
