Someone:Â I donât want to sound like a jerk, but why donât you try shipping the straight, canonical ships for once?
Me:
The whole Pepsi commercial thing reminded me that people always mis-remember the famous flower in the gun barrel photo as being a young woman. It wasnât. The photo, taken by Bernie Boston, is of George Edgerly Harris III better known by his stage name Hibiscus. He was a member of the San Francisco based radical gay liberation theater troupe the Cockettes. He died of AIDS in 1982 at the time AIDS was still referred to by the name GRID which stood for Gay Related Immuno-Deficiency. The photo was taken at a protest at the Pentagon.Â

no, but really: flytraps use up a LOT of energy closing their traps. You know a lot of other plants that move that much? Tricking them into closing when there isnât food there is indeed mean.
B-but⊠theyâre plants⊠theyâre devoid of sentience, right? They donât âfeel,â theyâre more like little wind-up machines. Right? They donât act on instinct, theyâre⊠well⊠traps. You canât actually be mean to a plant. Right??
Iâm of the opinion that meanness is about the nature of the action, not awareness on the part of the target of the action.Â
Tricking them into closing their traps is actually harmful to them, since the energy expended in closing and then re-opening the trap isnât replenished by having a tasty insect to digest.
Iâm of the opinion that meanness is about the nature of the action, not awareness on the part of the target of the action.
