crossposting from my twitter, but composition notes for this piece!

under the cut because its long

1) meaning: if you cant tell, scar's shawl is made from the same cloth of grian's scarf. in my iteration it was a gift (as advised to give by a certain someone). i did this for plot reasons but also to show they are interconnected, even with the fabric they wear. the scarf is black/navy blue and yellow. grian wears a red sweater and his scarf. scar wears the black/navy blue shawl with dangling red threads. i did this intentionally for my design, im sure you can guess why :) the scarf is like the golden fleece, if im forced to put to words

2) colors: again, red yellow blue. it was imperative this piece stuck to this palette because the primary colors are their colors, but moreso grian's. grian is the sun so he possessed more red and yellow, meanwhile scar is the night so he took more of the blue in the picture

3) shapes: again, because grian is the sun and scar is the moon, i tried to incorporate a crescent moon shape on the left side of scar with the scarf's silhouette. while grian has a quarter circle that looks to fit into the crescent of scar's moon (i hope i explain this right)

4) intention: grian was always the offense and scar the defense, and in this pic he plays the role as a knight to scar. hence im trying to draw the viewer's attention to grian first with his silhouette and details, before it slowly leads down to scar in the bottom. hes using his scarf to 'protect' scar, making scar's silhouette small but also vast (from the shawl). scar is also turned away from the viewer because its as if grian wants to draw the attention to himself, so that scar would be safe and hidden (like being in the bunker)

5) quote: its a very literal quote, not as metaphorical or analogical. the scarf is grian's lifeblood (for reasons i cannot explain ahaha)

6) constellation: the constellation of the cloth is actually taken from the constellation Draco! i edited it a bit to make it fit the direction of the scarf. idk how to explain this one, but if you look up the constellation's mythology and meaning, maybe you'll get it 🥹

i just love all the stories about production on project hail mary. they didn't use a single green/blue screen in the whole film. they built the whole interior of the hail mary. the petrova line scene was done practically by putting infrared lights on a chicken wire cage. rocky's voice was one of the puppeteers because he did such a good job during filming that they couldn't imagine anyone else voicing him. and rocky was a practical puppet/animatronic! sandra huller picked sign of the times as her karaoke song and she asked her daughter if it was still a cool song. i just feel like there was so much love making this film and im obsessed
