Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth games

This presentation pack released in 2014 celebrates the 20th edition commonwealth games in Glasgow. Using a 4 section concertina fold design this pack embodies the spirit of the games. i think this is successfully achieved through its use of graphic typefaces and dynamic illustrations. The use of vibrant colours in the images gives the pack an energetic style.

This pack as relatively large bodies of text full of information about the history of the commonwealth games, the events previous locations and statistics about the Glasgow games.

Lettering to grab on to

The optical illusion lettering above are by Turkish designer, Tolga Girgin. By day he works as an electronics engineer but at night he’s producing this excellent work. It all seemed to start on Instagram early last year and since then he’s gathered a ton of momentum.

Superb use of type.

This dynamic portrayal of type is both eye catching and thought provoking. The added sense of depth makes the type of interesting and visually more engaging for the reader. The meaning of each word is depicted through the design of its type. In my opinion this graphic use of words is a great way to relate words to an audience and gain their attention.

Editorial Rules (Layout Grids and Orientation)

There are rules of editorial design that should be followed to ensure the best outcome of the design. There is a lot to be considered when it comes to design editorial given that it is such a broad industry, newspapers only have various formats such as Broadsheet, Swiss, Berliner and Tabloid etc but these formats don't even include the composition and arrangement of the content.

When designing the layout of editorial the first thing to establish is the orientation, vertical or landscape. the type of layout grid also has to be considered, there are two types; a grid with an even number of columns and a grid with an odd number of columns. The images below demonstrate common examples of designs with even and odd layout grids in vertical and landscape orientations.

What is Editorial Design?

Editorial design is a large industry of written media such as; Magazines, Newspapers and book design including numerous other forms of written material. Although editorial design is the creation of written media due to the advancement of technology has forced countless newspaper publications and Magazine companies out of business, most of those that have survived this change to today have adapted to embrace new technologies expanding or moving their media to electronic platforms such as developing mobile apps, online website articles and email newsletters. These new platforms capitalize on the exponential march of technology allowing these companies to stay in business and continue to make profits, this is often achieved by making these new platforms subscription based services, this is particularly true of mobile apps from smartphones and tablets.

 Editorial designers make up one of the largest parts of the graphic design industry. Their job is to work on the layout and visual aesthetics of written and digital material. the different formats of editorial design require different aesthetics such as the style commonly found in magazines would differ from the style of a product catalogue.

Editorial design is much more than words on a page or screen, it is not only the composition of the words but the design of the page itself, the arrangement of images and colour, the organisation of information, the liberation of knowledge, making connections through the information given and the and how it is received by the reader.

  Amanda Muscat has used a chalkboard in the background to offer the employee a more natural and distinct background. The infographic CV works really well on a whole, and the colours used work well in what she is trying to portray. I like the way that Amanda has put what applications she is using currently and how skillful she is on each application. I feel that this shows honesty and will tell the employee exactly the person they’re looking to hire.

I really like this particular info graphic. The chalkboard being used as the background makes to the piece aesthetically appealing. I enjoy the structure and composition of the text, the clear headings makes the information easy to follow and understand. The limited amount of colours used in this piece allows the work to look clean while still is engaging to the audience.

This particular CV is very smooth in the way it has been laid out on the page. It has been produced by Gerardo Lisanti who puts across is humour and character in the CV, thus showing the employee through paper, that he is quite confident in his approach.

This CV really well due to a strong colour scheme and a good composition, the layout of this CV is organised into sections making easy for viewer to read, it is also laid out in a logical way giving information in a way that successfully represents the subject.
