x2 Reflection

I’ve learned so much more than I expected coming into this program. I’ve successfully made a lot of progress with my learning goals. I’ve learned how to control the drivers and animations in Principle where I can pretty much figure out how to animate anything. Just implementing those tools is still a challenge for me though. I completely know how to use Sketch and I know all the hot keys where Sketch has become my number one design tool. Lastly, I’ve learned how to weld a fine liner and gray marker like no other. Sketching ideas is really fun and I wish I had more time to do it. Finally, I can’t wait to bring my newly acquired skills to my home school and show them what AUAS has taught me. It was a wonderful experience that I’ll never forget.

Personal Learning Goal Progress - May 29th

As the semester’s end draws near, I think about all that I’ve learned throughout this course – and there were so many things I’ve learned.

1) My first learning goal was to learn how to animate in Principle. I’ve come a long way with Principle thanks to the HCI final and was even able to create my first animated prototype GIF which you can see in the post below and went straight up to my portfolio on Behance. It was really satisfying to see it go in all one loop. Of course, there’s still a LOT of room for improvement and I hope to improve even more over these next couple of weeks.

2) My progress with SketchApp is amazing! By now, I’ve started to use most of the hotkeys and I pretty much know where everything is. Even my friends have begun to ask me how to do certain things in Sketch which feels pretty great because it used to be the other way around.

3) Lastly, I’ve developed a pretty specific sketching on paper style. The sketches itself are really nice but I still want to work on sketching more often. In the beginning of a project, I should be doing twice as many sketches as I am now just to get all my ideas down on paper but I’m still failing at that. Hopefully the master test will also encourage me to sketch more since I’ll be designing for 3 systems!

Human Computer Interaction Design Reflection

My first introduction to animation! I’m really glad that I was able to learn the animation principles in this class. This was one of the most valuable classes in this course because animating prototypes and knowing how to prototype in general is one of the most challenging aspects of being a UX designer (to me). Learning how to use Principle better was really worthwhile and I hope to do more animating in the master test.

Seductive Interaction Design Reflection

I learned a lot in this class! I became so familiar with the seductive principles that they became apart of my daily life. I was able to recognize the principle in all the apps and websites that I saw. Now when I design, I consciously think of these principles to make my design more seductive.

I thought this project was really worthwhile because I learned how to use Principle pretty well. I do wish that this project was more on the screen designs and animated prototypes rather than the document. I felt like too much time was spent on the document since there was a lot of information that needed to be written and I wish I could’ve spent that time working on actual screen designs and perfecting animations.

Big Information Architecture Reflection

This class was a big confusing to get my head around but in the end I was okay with my outcome. Changing the space of the Centraal Station overall would provide a comfortable and interactive experience for travellers waiting at Centraal Station for longer than normal times. Just knowing that there is a space for them to sit at and either charge their electronics, play with the devices, or look at local art installations or small museum exhibits greatly enhances the user experience of the whole station. By looking at the situation through the AEIOU lens that the teacher suggested, I was able to identify what problems were occuring and find a solution quickly based off it. Redesigning the space changed my original AEIOU outline for the better. In the future, I think looking at a problem through a lens will help me identify user needs and wants and what could be done to solve the problem.

Cognitive Psychology Reflection

Based upon research I did in this class and in the final project, it was evident that social influence is employed in numerous ways throughout our daily lives. By looking in depth at the varieties of influence: conformity, identification & idealisationm, it becomes clear that studying social influence is crucial for designing user experiences. Out of these three ideas, social compliance is the most effective influencer, as following the crowd and conforming to the ‘social norm’ rules all of our actions. I did not know of Cialdini’s principles of persuasion before this class (even though it seems to be a big thing in the field)! Each of these weapons and psychological principles that I have learned in this class have rules and techniques that marketers and designers should abide to to be successful in their influencing strategies and reach desired actions. It is important that these rules are used in ethical ways as many studies shown in this blog have brought light on the negative aspects that social influence has on users and society.

Multi Device Design Reflection

This was the first ever large-scale UX assignment that I’ve ever completed and I can definitely say I’ve learned a lot from it. Although I learned a lot during the module and classes, I felt as if I was starting this project from just very basic knowledge about creating a multi-device designed experience system, especially compared to my classmates who have been doing this for much longer than me now. I was both excited and scared to come up with a whole app ecosystem by myself but I think the outcome was completely worth the time spent on it. I had to look up many different concepts online including how to do certain things in Sketch. By doing this, I learned a lot and can say that I am more confident with the Sketch tools and way more confident in talking about my ideas and making them realistic. During the module, it was interesting to talk about how different devices interact with one another since it’s something we don’t usually think about even though it affects us everyday. From now on, when I am designing a new system, I will think about how different devices and truly play a role and how to utilize their differences accordingly.

User Experience Design Reflection

The first formal introduction to UX design was in this class. Learning the exact terms that I would later be using for the rest of the course and in my life was a great introduction to the semester. It laid the foundation that each course then subsequently used. I created a cultural probe to find out certain things about a user to create the ultimate user experience for a certain product/system. These methods can be used in any project moving forward. Below is the experience map that my partner and I created to detail the exact experience a typical user would take in our experience.

Ready to learn, ready to succeed.

That is my Unique Selling Point (USP). My willingness and want to learn has allowed me to do many things in my life. Whether it be learning how to climb huge boulders to learning how to design an app, I think that I can take on most jobs and roles in life just using my sheer will to learn to figure everything out. I’m still very playful and like to have fun in anything I do though so here is a representation of my playful yet serious self.

Progress Updates – April 23

1) I’ve begun to learn Principle in preparation for my final for HCI! This will be an animated prototype.

2) I’m pretty great at sketch by now B)

3) My most recent sketch for HCI was pretty clear! I also did it in only one try so that’s pretty great!

Trello’s simplicity lends it to be the ultimate tool for anyone that needs to get things done. Their UX is so clear that no one gets confused by it and it also has a real-world feel with the card movings.

Shazam! What’s great about this app is that they know what the users want to do right when they open the app: quickly Shazam a song before it ends. They put the service/content first as soon as it loads without overloading the user’s minds with other nonsense on the page. Of course they offer other features which you can conveniently swipe left or right to see after you’ve finished Shazaming the song!

Contrastingly to me dislike of the Amazon website, I quite like the Amazon app. It makes for an easy buying experience just at my finger tips. The various content on the home page works better in this app format than it does on the website and scrolling allows my eyes to focus on one bit at a time so I’m not overwhelmed.

I use Yelp whenever I want to see what’s the best food option near me. They provide a list of the best places while simultaneously showing them on the map, it’s brilliant! Makes it very easy for me to choose the best spot based on location and all the filters.

Reddit really puts the user’s desired content first which is what I really appreciate about the app. They are able to provide promoted posts without getting in the way of my browsing to provide this great free service. The navigation is easy and no frills and gives the app a bit of a real world feel!

As much as I love the NYC Subway, the user experience of their machines is horrible. There is a steep learning curve when it comes to using these machines and tourists and newcomers alike are always confused on how to actually get a ticket from these bad boys.

As much as I love Amazon, they’re homepage has always boggled me. Why is there so much content? Surely they could find a way to make my eye focused on one thing rather than multiple things at once. I usually try to avoid the homepage all together because there’s too much to look at.
