Accidentally deleted this (meant to delete something else so good job me) so I expanded a bit! Use a random number generator for a variety of symptoms/scenarios for writer’s block. Sorry to those who already reblogged it!

temperature taking is so fucking good!!!! someone having to go through the ordeal of having their temp taken with a thermometer!!! or a caretaker checking by physically bringing their hand up to a feverish face!!!! the best is when it’s combined

Checking with a thermometer then with their hand: Maybe the thermometer was used immediately because they just look so sick and there’s no way they don’t have a fever, then a hand is gingerly brought to their forehead to further confirm the high number on the device. Or maybe physical contact seems too intimate for the both of them, but once a fever is confirmed the caretaker wants to double check and the feverish friend leans hard into the hand because it feels so nice and cool and please just keep it there for a minute.

Checking with their hand then a thermometer: An absolute banger of a classic. They stumble into the room obviously unwell and a quick hand to the forehead that migrates to their cheek basically confirms a fever. But let’s take your temperature too just to see how bad it is. And regardless of how bad it is, they’ll be treated with the same amount of love and care.

Both at the same time: They’re laid out in bed, cocooned in blankets as they’re wracked with chills. A thermometer lazily hanging from their lips as their beloved sits on the edge of the bed waiting for the device to beep. And in the silence they bring a gentle hand up to their forehead and rest it there, tsk’ing at the warmth radiating off of it and rhythmically rubbing their thumb along the sweat-dampened brow. All of which dulls feverish thoughts and lulls them into a peaceful doze.

It turns out B, desperate for a way out of a party, used them as an excuse to stay home, and now C is worried and coming over to check on them.

So are you going to tell us about the giant hyperpredatory sperm whales or do I have to go google some nightmares myself?

we’re all familiar with the Sperm Whale of our modern seas, largest of the Toothed Whales! it’s also completely specialized for eating squid and squid ONLY, a comfort to anyone who’s ever managed to get just a bit too close to those enormous razor jaws.

but this was very much not always the case! the earlier members of the Sperm Whale lineage were much less… discerning.

early Sperm Whales all resembled our friendly modern swimming school bus to some degree, but the main difference was in the jaws- early Sperm Whales like Acrophyseter and Zygophyseter all had wide, powerful jaws with ENORMOUS teeth suitable for snacking on fish, dolphins, aquatic sloths, and pretty much anything else they could fit down their enormous gullets, kind of like a modern Orca.

and from 12 to 7 million years ago, these things RULED the seas. Megalodon who?

but the greatest of these was Livyatan Melvillei, which was the size of our modern Sperm Whale. 

reaching up to 60 feet long and weighing well over 60 tons, it this thing was a Sea Monster in every sense of the word. 

it is so BONKERS huge that they named it after the Hebrew name for the Biblical Leviathan (and also Herman Melville, who would have gotten a real kick out of it). I cannot overstate how unsafe it would be to share an ocean with this thing. Moby Dick would have been an entirely different book if it was still around. 

so what does a 60-feet hyperpredatory whale eat?

*Groucho Marx voice* WHY, ANYTHING IT WANTS. 

(but mostly other whales.)

Livyatan spent most of its time cruising around looking for delicious smaller whales to shove into that nightmare maw up there, a lifestyle choice we call macroraptorial. though in a pinch, anything else would also do. 

(basically, if you were a mid-sized baleen whale in the paleozoic seas you were just SHIT out of luck, between Megalodon and this thing.)

Livyatan may have died out as little as 5 million years ago, meaning it might even have been around to make the early ancestors of Orcas regret their life choices! (Livyatan is the only animal that could possibly make an Orca regret anything, but God, at what cost)

but die out they did, and that’s probably a good thing for us. why don’t we all just take a moment to really appreciate our modern hyperspecialized Sperm Whales, especially the part where they don’t eat us!

❤️ Imagine someone allergic and so teasingly itchy scrunch up their nose in the cutest way. Wiggle and squish it around while it twitches and blushes more and more with the minute.  And it tickles so much and nothing helps. Each sniff is kindling the irritation further but not enough to spark the final relieving sneeze. Their partner watches them, thinking how adorable they are looking so ticklish and completely engrossed in that allergic tease.  They plant the softest, feathery kisses atop that twitching, reddened nose tip.  Maybe innocently to express their love and brimming fondness at those little but not subtle actions. But maybe also to help along with the “problem”. To be that spark to inflame the tickle enough for a much needed release- or several. In any case it works and they almost explode into a helpless yet very satisfying fit that manages to finally clean their nose from all the irritants coating its inner membranes.  And when they are done they can´t help but mutter a relieved sigh that takes away any leftover tension. Before they can stop themselves they whisper breathlessly: “Oh gosh, that felt good…”  And their partner just laughs fondly, maybe with a knowing and smug edge around their lips before they kiss the other again: “Bless you, sounded like you needed those…” They mutter against soft lips.

As you all have seen, I am such a simp for sneeze being paired with tenderness and warmth and LOVE, so here I am once again writing a scenario that’s basically a fic

And I’m thinking about: two partners planning on going out for something that one has been DYING to do, like see a concert or go to a book signing with their fave author or WHATEVER, use your imagination

And the other finds themself sick on the day of!! And they’re trying so hard to hide it because ruining this for their partner is out of the question. They’re going through the motions of stifling every sneeze, only wiping their nose when partner’s not looking, making excuses for every cough and sniffle, etc etc. Their partner has expressed gentle concern all day and has asked them to just admit to being under the weather, but the sick one insists that all is well and changes the subject.

And shortly before the event, they just...can’t hide it anymore. Maybe they had a particularly drenching sneezing fit that they just could not stifle, followed by a congested snuffle that they know gives them away completely. They’re feverish and exhausted, have chills and a bad cough. Their partner refuses to play along with “I swear I’m not sick” anymore. Sick one finds their warm face being cradled, soft eyes looking into their teary ones.

“[Name/honey/dear/love/etc etc], I need you to admit it to me....and yourself....”

Sick one knows exactly what they mean. The acceptance seem to deflate them.

“I’ve got a cold…”, voice soft and defeated.

Every part of them aches with either exhaustion or congestion or some sore muscle or another, as though admitting this ripped the duct tape off of an already busted pipe.

Of course, partner doesn’t care what event they’re missing, because their person feels terrible and that’s what matters to them. And sick one feels so endlessly guilty, but...their partner makes it pretty clear that they’d rather be here, holding them close and kissing their temple and running fingers through their hair on the couch. Whatever event there was can’t even compare.

Detecting a languid heartbeat under the heated skin – and then a weak, softly uttered "I think – I think I need to lie down".

Caretaker's hand moving swiftly to support the whumpee's head as they're easing them to the ground.

And then pushing back sweaty strands of hair as they come to.

Someone with a bad cold cuddling up with their partner who digs a sneeze and just... not making any efforts to contain congested, drippy sneezes all down their partner’s bare chest, their stomach, their—well, anywhere. Snuffling fruitlessly and blinking up at them with a glossy-eyed “scuse be” as if they aren’t actively trying to drench every bit of their (super turned on) love just the way they like 😌
