"Ah, yes. Malcolm." Jextor was a Krogan that could remember things well, but only the things he wanted to remember and the people as well. For those with whom he didn’t have much contact with, they were simply forgotten if they didn’t meet up with him. "Meh. Those things probably stand up in every year so its easy to remember."

"Any changes to keep in mind?"  Krogan, meant that Jextor probably knew the threats more than anything else.  Which wasn't all he was concerned over, but was a damned good portion of it.  Especially after the time away he'd had.  "Been out a few months taking care of business.  Come back, have to know what's going on."

"Doesn’t bother me enough to warrant throwing a hissy fit to get it taken down." he stated flatly. "Unless it’s an ad for something illegal or something I don’t like, I don’t really care."

"You have a different definition of hissy fit than me," he said calmly.  One brow raised as he watched the man.  "I just said that's where I recognized you from.  Not many people get their faces in the ads after all.  No need to take offense."

There were worse places to find omni-tool parts than this particular shitty electronics store.  That he was sure of.  What he wasn't sure of was where that hellhole would be.  He didn't bother looking up when he heard the door sliding open, just grumbled out a short sentence, "I wouldn't even bother if I were you.  I've found better parts in a junk heap."

The commander glanced over at the other man, quirking an eyebrow slightly; he didn’t seem to be all that excited to see him, like people normally were when they met him. Granted he wasn’t in the mood for bouncy fans at that particular moment anyway, but that was beside the point.

"You make it sound like it’s my fault." he said. "Not like I commissioned them or something."

Malcolm chuckled, arms crossing over his chest as he leaned back against the wall.  "May not have commissioned them, but you'd think you own some right to give permission or take it away.  Don't even have that much over your name, or you have a lawyer for the details?"

A warm-up. That was what Saren had called it.

Nihlus had been at this for well over four years and the older turian still looked at him and his accomplishments like he was some useless Shatha pup that shit on his carpet. There was just no pleasing him. Or if there was, he had a damnable way of showing it—which was not at all.

It aggravated him, certainly, but Nihlus refused to let that silver-plated bastard get under his scales. Recovering a cargo of stolen salarian eggs was important. Dull work compared to his usual assignments, but nevertheless important. The eggs belonged to a prominent clan within Salarian Space, a dignitary of Sur’Kesh. The parents would have paid a hefty ransom for the eggs’ safe return, but Nihlus was ordered to do it for free, courtesy of Councilor Valern.

It had been relatively easy tracking down the ship harboring the stolen eggs. The kind of scumbags who made a living off of this sort of crime generally yeilded to a gun shoved in their face—a bullet ripping through their kneecaps, if necessary. After that, they were typically very eager to aid Nihlus in his mission.

"Kaufman," Nihlus called out, with an unsettling kind of calm to his flanged voice, cold and nonchalant all at once. "You have something I need. It isn’t your life, so I’d suggest cooperating."

Right now the turian didn't know his position.  At least not for sure.  Didn't even know who he was really up against. If Malcolm had it right, the man had an alias and a glimpse of him, what he could gain before Malcolm had vanished into cover.  Speaking back would get his location pinpointed.  That much he knew for sure.

But right now, diplomacy might be the only thing he could use to get out of here in one piece.  He glanced down at his omni-blade.  No match against a gun if his opponent was on guard.  After a moment, he actually spoke.

"And just what is it you need turian?" he spoke lowly, his voice cautious.

Bakery - Edenpride

"I didn’t think you had, sir," he responded evenly, though the condescending nickname bristled him. Neil had suffered worse in the name of customer service, however. His teeth bit his bottom lip lightly, brow lifting at the sound of him growling. Usually if customers growled, it was their stomachs. There wasn’t much they had here that you could take offence to.

"Oh, uh, no. Not those. We keep the dextro and levo stuff as far away from each other as possible. Do you just want… any twelve?" he asked, getting out a box and a pair of plastic tongs to grab the doughnuts with. A brief smile tugged at his lips at the compliment, if you could call it that. "Yeah, I mean you don’t get much better than this in Bachjret Ward. Not this level of it, anyway, but I’ve worked here a few years and the food’s always been great."

Malcolm seemed to realize only belatedly how he sounded.  He paused, clearly settling himself, or trying to at least, before returning to look at the options.  "Any twelve.  I'm not a picky man when it comes to doughnuts."  He actually managed to push a smile, though it looked no less vaguely condescending than his nicknames sounded.  He wasn't a man used to casual interaction, not yet anyway, and it showed with how he couldn't seem to summon up actual courtesy.

"When you get the money, owner should move higher up.  You'll get more customers there, heh, richer ones."

First Contact War. That was a long time ago, even a little too long, and on top of that, this man was old enough to leave after the war. Estimation pinned him at around fifties or early sixties if looks were also anything to go by. “Only once a year? I know of a lot of people who left my home afterwards, too. Though it’s nice that there’s so many places, I could never leave my home for so long.” He’d miss everything too much, though he didn’t know Mal had reason to abandon everything, to leave it all behind. So, he never saw the Reaper invasion? “But I hope this means your family is safe here?”

He’d almost forgotten he was set on edge earlier, and was grinning slightly at this spiel on age. “You always say old, but you don’t look so old. My father insists sixty is the new thirty,” he assured. “If I’m lucky, it will be eighty by the time I’m older.”

"Well when you grow up on Earth all your life, then space opens up with all kinds of new crap in it... easy to go ahead and see what you find out there."  That had been his main reason for leaving, if he was honest.  New York had gotten stifling, but off Earth?  Off Earth was unexplored - by humans anyway - and full of new territory.  New work.

Of course the work he'd found managed to be even more questionable than the gangs he'd been involved with back on planet.  But when the only victims were aliens, it was perfectly easy for him to excuse himself.  They weren't human after all and, as far as he'd ever been concerned, if it wasn't human, it didn't truly matter.  "Heh, when I was your age, sixty was old and eighty was half dead.  Hasn't changed in my head just because I'm looking at over a century now."

As many krogan as the Citadel seemed to have accumulated, they were still rare enough to stand out.  And while he could put up with aliens on most days, on a bad day?  His patience wasn't near as long.  The frown stayed firmly rooted on his face as he breathed out a stream of smoke and he watched suspiciously, like he expected a fight to break out if the krogan were left unattended for too long.

The man’s lack of deference, though grating, was almost refreshing. Shepard had begun to tire of the jumpy recruits and grateful refugees, everyone treating her as though she were more than just a soldier fighting in a war. She was the spearhead, sure, but no bloody hero.

"I see." She took a sip of her whiskey with a nod at the bartender. "Things aren’t always as glitzy as the vids show, you know." She raised an eyebrow at the man beside her. "And not everyone makes money off them."

"The less glitzy it is, more money you should make."  He said it simply, like that was actually how things worked.  "Least, that's how it should be.  You're out there risking your neck, should at least get paid enough to make up for it."

He chuckled.  "But, then, suppose I'd have been able to retire a lot sooner if I got paid extra for working the Terminus."

Neil’s arm swept over the counter in wide, circular motions. The rag in his hand was starting to look a little worse for wear, he’d probably need a new one soon. At least his efforts had paid off, the counters were almost spotless. As much as he touted the quality of the food at The Upper Crust, its venue could be better. Everything on this level of Bachjret Ward looked a little worse for wear these days, so it was hardly their fault.

He heard the door open, but didn’t look up until a voice addressed him. Neil’s head snapped up. “Uh.” The worst part about working as a cashier was he couldn’t really snark at the customers. Most of the pastries were laid out on a display, the rest tucked carefully away from eyesight.

"Depends on what you want, sir. If you want cheap we have cookies and stuff. If you wanted something a little more special you’re going to have to pay more. Sorry."

He hadn't come all the way down to the wards for cheap cookies.  "I don't wander in expecting free pastries, kid, don't worry."  He scanned the area, making a noise that sounded much like a grumble of dissatisfaction at the options.  Not because they were lacking, more because he wasn't particularly good at sounding anything but dissatisfied.

"None of these are for turians, right?"  He asked as he narrowed his scan down to one particular display.  "If these aren't for turians, I'll take a dozen."  He gestured vaguely to a few donuts.  "Nice place, for being crabbed into scenery it is."

Interference

He was starting to get too old for this.

The contract itself had been plenty simple, no risk to him as far as he could have told.  Pick up the cargo - not even of slaves, of eggs, salarian eggs couldn't possibly be a goddamned hassle - and bring it from one galaxy to another.  Less than a week of his time babysitting a batch of eggs for a decent pay off at the end.

No one had told him to predict any sort of fight.  The pay should have tipped him off that something was wrong here.  And one of his latest aliases - Matthew Kaufman - had been going around a touch more often than he preferred.

He crouched behind his cover, omni-blade drawn and breath held in so the turian wouldn't hear him.

The salarian paused for a moment.  ”I could… ask the same of you,” he said at last, doing his best not to let toomuch of his discomfort show.  ”I mean, I’m not really out here for anything in particular!” he went on, fidgeting a bit under the human’s gaze.  ”Just walking!  Not doing anything!  What are you doing here?”

Yes, because getting defensive was plainly the best way to solve this situation…

This was the part where the average person would have just left the damn salarian alone.  Malcolm was not the average person and empathy - especially for a nonhuman - didn't exactly come easy to him.  He rolled his eyes. "You aren't fooling anyone salarian, just making yourself look more suspicious."

Most people would have questioned why he always seemed so content, but never, rarely, was it the other way around. Did he know more than what he was letting on? Did he read his file? “You can tell by looking? What? Do I look sad? Is it my face?” Despite his worries, he sounded and acted completely innocent. He checked his reflection over the datapad but looked normal. At least to him. He tried sounding more serious. “Although I wanted to ask why you thought that at first, it’s true most people have endured hardships. So, even if I say you’re right, it’s really nothing unique.” They all had the Reapers to thank for that.

At the mention of New York, Jinho felt infinitely lighter, then conflicted. If this man came from New York, was born on Earth, that meant he lost his home, and here Jin was concerned about his own security. How selfish. A sense of guilt started to burrow its way through his head. “Are you a refugee, too?”

Plenty of questions out of this one.  Malcolm chuckled.  "No refugee.  Left Earth long time ago, after first contact.  Space opens up, hard for a man not to at least take a look at it.  Been out ever since, only stopped on Earth... Christ, must have been around once a year."  Though there were  a few years he knew for sure he didn't go back.  Partially because one of his preferred alias' had been circulating more than he liked.

"Heh, not your face.  Just... a hunch.  Old men are allowed to have hunches, aren't they?"  Though he really was overplaying his age.  These days?  Sixty didn't seem so old.  Not when he was looking at damn near another sixty left before he really started to fade.

A cop.  Lovely.  Even retired, he still wasn’t over that immediate instinct to cut the conversation short right there.  Instead though, he just gave a short shrug.  ”Bigger than your patrols used to be?”

"I was just out of the area where the port was, so I saw non-humans some of the time but I never dealt with them. Wasn’t part of my jurisdiction. Suddenly being around these, hanar and elcor… it’s wild."

Non humans.  Admittedly something he should have thought about before picking out a place on the Citadel.  It wasn't that he hated them.  But his interactions had always been... well limited to a few select scenarios.  "Culture shock.  This place isn't like Earth, that's for sure."
