Eve nodded solemnly. It was only expected that the length of life would shorten when living in such dangerous situations. It was something she fretted about quite often with her friends. “It makes sense it would be so but it’s still so very sad. I’ve lost a lot of friends.”
There was an overwhelming number of soldiers and the like in her life. Peacekeepers, heroes, adventurers, warlords, if anyone was going to have anything to do with her it was likely them. Civilians were more apt to run or mob. She wasn’t sure what made them more discerning. Even out here where her being didn’t have any meaning to anyone but herself.
"I travel quite often, yes." Nihlus’ assessment of her being a vagabond wasn’t far off from the truth. She traveled constantly, even before her mother had died. Travel was the only way to keep somewhat safe. Now it was more because she simply enjoyed exploring without bias. She still had a home, it just also happened to be full of other vagabonds. Wasn’t even completely sure they should be there.
"I'm sorry," Nihlus replied, because that seemed like the only thing right to say. And, in an effort to seem less callus, added solemnly, "So have I."
Nihlus wasn't keen on thinking over the morality and mortality of his profession, the sacrifices given and taken. He was not fond of either in equal measure, but personal experience was quite educational on subjects which only proved to be a hindrance to his survival--sentiment being among them.
And Nihlus quite liked being alive, all things considered. Particularly after he had had a taste of death. It wasn't as mysterious and philosophical as it was often romanticized to be. It only hurt like hell.
"Have you a ship of your own, or do you simply travel this world?" Most people might have doubted that this little slip of a girl was fit to travel alone beyond the atmosphere of this planet, but he had met plenty of resilient, ingenuity youths--not many of them human, but still.
"I reckon it’s a good thing you’re a Spectre and not a C-Sec officer then, hm? So what is your strongest suit?" Shepard’s mouth pursed, then quirked to the side in a grin at his response. "There’s a time and place for decorum. I wouldn’t be supposed to learning a few new tricks from you—if you’re ah, offering."
A brow lifted at his expression, intrigued. Turian mannerisms were still new to Shepard, but even she knew what the dilation in the eyes meant—at least among humans. She met his stare evenly, small smirk in place and eyes almost challenging him. “Only quivering? Guess I’ll have to try harder.”
"I imagine I'd be as terrible a C-Sec officer as I was a soldier for the Hierarchy. Lucky that this profession of ours exists at all, or else I would be very talented but equally unemployed." Nihlus shrugged, the warm hum of his voice seemingly pleasant, enjoying the banter. "Precisely, Shepard. We might even learn from each other. I've heard nothing but praise about your biotic abilities."
Nihlus met the challenge in her eyes unflinchingly, revealing very little in his expression except the warm tension in the space around them they didn't fill up. But he wondered precisely where the provocation would lead to. The sliver of doubt was smothered instinctively.
"And I'll be harder for it," He quipped, an insolent grin in his voice. "To scare, that is."
She’s not doing anything particularly nefarious. Just walking with practiced grace from lifetimes of etiquette training, broken up periodically by an overly childish skip or balance act. Eve was never a good student. Her skirts were most definitely not fitted for weapon holding either. They needn’t be when she was capable of summoning her weaponry whenever from wherever or even fabricating something simple from the environment. Not quite the deception one thought of normally.
"I know many people like that, they become very stressed and live shorter lives. Sometimes, some of them are abnormally long lived." Her niece for example. That was demon assisted but it was not always the case. Perhaps not something you want to tell people. "Actually, most of them are soldiers of some kind."
She ‘hmm’d thinking on how to answer his actual question. “Whether or not home is near is really dependent on your way of thinking. Nothing is ever really far away from me but geographically speaking we are quite far, though not as far as I have been before.”
If that made any sense.
Nihlus managed a laugh, stiff and dry and decidedly short-lived, if only because the irony of her remark was too obvious to disregard, even if it was a private irony on his part. "Well, count me among them. In my profession we do have a rather short life expectancy, usually. As it happens, I'm no exception."
It was arguably the most pleasant walk he had had in a long time. But then there wasn't anything Nihlus could really compare it to. He only knew that it had been a very long time since he had been in the company of youth, much less children. And she was certainly childlike, in a way. But she was a stranger, an unknown, and knowing that stained his mind with suspicion.
But her steady, graceful steps were colored with little skips, almost frolicking, a vaguely eerie sort of innocence to her demanor that he would have to get use to. Soldiers and civilians tended to be worlds apart.
His mandibles twitched, brow-plates furrowing only slightly at her answer. It was not a simple one. His conclusions only led him to assume she was a vagabond. That, or she was not inclinced to be very forthcoming with personal information. He understood that, at the very least.
"You travel, then?" He offered.

Assassination is one percent shooting, ninety-nine percent preparation: anticipating moves, devising approaches, recruiting sources, finding the perfect opportunity so the bullet’s almost an after-thought. Usually that’s when a target’s on the move, when there are too many variables to control them all… There are ways to lessen the risk: an armed escort, taking an unpredictable route to your destination, having back-up in a trail car. But ultimately, as long as the assassin knows where you’re going, they have the upper hand.
-Michael Westen, Burn Notice 110: False Flag
SPECTRES ARE NOT TRAINED, BUT CHOSEN. INDIVIDUALS FORGED IN THE FIRE OF SERVICE AND BATTLE; THOSE WHOSE ACTIONS ELEVATE THEM ABOVE THE RANK AND FILE.
SPECTRES ARE AN IDEAL, A SYMBOL. THE EMBODIMENT OF COURAGE, DETERMINATION, AND SELF-RELIANCE.THEY ARE THE RIGHT-HAND OF THE COUNCIL,INSTRUMENTS OF OUR WILL.
SPECTRES BEAR A GREAT BURDEN. THEY ARE PROTECTORS OF GALACTIC PEACE, BOTH OUR FIRST AND LAST LINE OF DEFENSE. THE SAFETY OF THE GALAXY IS THEIRS TO UPHOLD.
As much as she’s overly curious as to the specifics of Nihlus’ injuries, she isn’t going to pry and make the mood uncomfortable. Besides, she figures the longer they”re both here for, taking the time to shoot at targets, that more talk will be initiated. Habit has a history of repeating itself, and that one is a particular means that Shepard uses to bring in conversation.
She knows her movements are a little sluggish, still contesting the motor functions of her trained body as if she’s inhibited by alcohol or drugs for that matter. As much as she has a prescription for pain medication, she’s refused to take any other than when she attempts to sleep, hoping it might help her mind settle down at any rate. Regardless, she does her best not to turn her head too far. Only hearing out of one side has been an irritating problem for her, with nothing she can do but to wait it out.
“Well, I’ve been known to be quite compromising with the right situation.” Shepard adds with a soft laugh, cut short by a sharp pain reminding her yet again she should be laying down or resting still. “Though if you are looking for something to do, I’m sure I can find something.”
She lifts the pistol, steadying the position of her feet. All of this is muscle memory, but she’s been a bit out of active usage and she wants to make sure she doesn’t add to any injury or create a new one, however small it may be. Only when he he answers, she nods, pausing to fire the first shot before she answers. It’s her means of stalling„ which she’s sure he’ll use to his advantage as well. When the shot takes the target in the sternum area, she lets out her breath slowly.
“Yeah. Rehab’s a good way to put it.” Another shot, this time in the neck of the target. “Head injury.”
He settles himself in a familiar stance, rigid and relaxed and somehow managing this all at once, as his talons close around the handle of his gun. His grip is firm and sure as he raises his arm. There's a tremor through the length of the limb, subtle but steady, joints burning underneath muscle and sinew and blue, blue blood. He's been at this for hours, it's almost familiar now.
"From what I've heard, you've been in plenty of compromising situations." He glances at her briefly, allows a short chuckle. "How kind of you to offer. Ever the paragon of your species, hm, Shepard? The firing range does get old after a few dozen hours."
He aims for the head. Always the head. Right at the center, between the temples. Nihlus applies pressure to the trigger and the gun promptly goes off. The bullet crashes through the mouth, dislocating jaw and teeth and bursting out of the nape of the neck on the other side.
Nihlus inhales, a rumble of air sucked into his lungs. The shot hit its head, but not the area he had wanted. Still--progress is progress, however painstakingly slow.
Shepard's company helps keep his composure in check, the pressure in his chest lulled by the other Spectre's presence. He's less likely to lose his cool even by a fraction when there's an audience--specifically one he shares a brief history with. It's a good distraction.
His arm lowers, settles back to his side, his body relaxing now. He stares at the damage he's done, and then at Shepard's, a contemplative expression in the twitch of his mandibles,
"In my experience, head injuries are...severely unpleasant." He thinks he should laugh--at the irony, at least. Or the understatement. But he doesn't. Just gestures to his right arm. "Dislocated shoulder. The worse of it, anyway."
The next words he utters are an afterthought, "It's good to see you out and about, regardless. How are you healing up?"
Adamastus. Turian OC.
Nihlus’ younger half-brother. By the year of the Reaper Invasion I believe he’d be about 18 or 19? With a strong resemblance to their mother. Very smart young man, engineer class, resourceful but nowhere near in the same league as his brother. All raw potential and idealism.
