nastiest trick in the book is getting you genuinely deeply attached to a character whose name sounds fucking stupid in any other context. this WILL happen to you at some point in your life.

So, Goob! We don't know a lot about how he behaved during the show's run. Really, all the concrete information we have of him during that time is that he loves family, hugs, helping others feel better via hugs, and supporting his sister.
Like many toons, he also seems to be neurodivergent in some way, but thankfully there is no ableism among the toons, at least not towards him. He even needs some physical accommodation at times, which the toons (such as Teagan, and implied by Sprout) are perfectly fine with supplying. Goob stands out among the rest of the toons for his relentless optimism, in spite of the dreadful conditions he and his peers must put up with.
This, combined with his somewhat lackadaisical and whimsical attitude, can unfortunately bring viewers to have a negative perception of him. While ableism is not present in the toons, it IS currently present in humans. Some may assume that because Goob behaves this way, he simply doesn't understand what's going on. "Is Goob unaware of his situation?" "Is Goob stupid?"
And I think this is actually reflected in Goob's character. I believe that Goob's writing may be purposefully designed so most people's thoughts of him align with how he was thought of in-universe by humans, while the museum was still open and the show was still running. When you look into Goob's dialogue, you will find that he puts a lot of emphasis on self-acceptance:
And the thing is- given his character introduction card, I see no reason to believe that this perspective was built-in. I believe that his philosophy of pragmatic optimism was something that Goob learned because of the show- because of people. It would've even helped him better support kids who don't look down on him, who are upset at themselves for things that Goob knows don't need to be bad. Isn't it interesting that, when faced with toons doubting others and themselves, Goob knows exactly what to say to discourage them from being pessimistic or cruel about it? How Goob seems to be so wise in specifically this subject? I think it is.
Moving on, this perspective of his may have actually made Goob uniquely prepared for the fall of Gardenview. That focus on self-belief, and seeing the good in a bad situation he can't escape- it's not like such a perspective would have been useless while the show was active. Toons were not treated like real people. Perhaps other toons would have been able to pretend it wasn't the case, but if I'm right that Goob was already seen negatively by viewers, he would not have been able to afford doing that the way others did. This mindset is an iron-clad defensive wall that would have been able to keep Goob happy even when kids and adults alike looked down on him for being different. When the closure happened, in some ways, it could've been an improvement for Goob. If I'm right, there wouldn't have been much to miss.
Goob is keenly aware of his situation, but he focuses on what he can change. He doesn't give the darkness any room in his mind, because he knows it would help no-one, and helping means the world right now. A lot of the misery for the toons in Gardenview is caused directly by their own minds, insecurities about themselves, the trauma they were left with by their programming and mistreatment, so he does his best to change them. He wants to share his mindset so the toons hurt less, and I think that's very admirable. Does it work? Mm, so far, no, not really. But I think him trying at all means something.
To me, everything about Goob serves to strengthen a major running theme of Dandy's World; that if you're viewed as lesser, that doesn't mean it's true. You may be treated like entertainment, or like you're incapable, all for reasons outside of your control, but you're just as much of a person, who deserves respect as everyone else, and the people who treat you that way are wrong to, no matter how different you are. Focus on what you can change, and survive. Live as best you can in your circumstances, because you deserve to be happy. Support those around you if you can, because they deserve that too.
Goob is a beacon of light, trying to illuminate the way for everyone else to follow into a better future for themselves, even when trapped in situations they can't change, and I hope this post helps others see that. Goob is wonderful.
