Spent today organising my screenshots from last years ROV dives. Mostly from Schmidt Ocean Institute and E/V Nautilus but also a few from MBARI, WHOI and NOAA. 

I’m part of a Discord that discusses the dives as they’re happening, sharing screenshots and IDs of organisms and just generally being excited about the deep sea. We started as a small group of enthusiasts but now have a lot of the scientists from the various research institutes joining in and helping with IDs.

Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.

While transgender women exhibited higher lean mass than cisgender women, their physical fitness was comparable. Current evidence is mostly low certainty and has heterogenous quality but does not support theories of inherent athletic advantages for transgender women over cisgender.

Also, “partner” is just a good word? It implies an equal relationship where both of your work together in pursuit of something, whether that be life goals or just having fun together.

Also, what was that about a pen license?

When kids are first learning to write, they usually do their schoolwork in graphite pencil, so that mistakes can be erased and they don't stain everything with ink. Once they exhibit enough control and competence to be trusted with a pen, we say they have their "pen license" and ballpoint pens are phased in. Kids generally don't give a shit but parents and teachers treat this as an informal sort of milestone and act like they should aspire to it.
