A New Light
Maybe it was the failing grade she received on her paper today, or perhaps it was when that boy stared at her wrong, or it could have been when she looked in the mirror for too long that pushed her over the edge, or maybe, it just perhaps the cracking ceiling above her head finally spoke to her, because with each step she took, a part of her soul was already escaping her body, out the window that was left ajar feeling so free like it was just let out of a holding cell, the cage her ribs.
It was cheering now and dancing a rhythm that bounced off the moon and stars, or maybe it was swimming, reaching down into the bottom of the ocean to find the light she had once had. She felt euphoric, a vision of blues and mellow yellows surrounded her vision, the endorphins blissfully crawling out of the various cells in her brain and wiring themselves in place.
Her heart cracked, leaking the colourless ooze of every ounce of love she once had, her ribs breaking - the cage, the bones finally snapping at her frigid state, her tears adding to the mixture that was flowing so rapidly out of her body.
The water engulfed her, almost like hands were reaching up and pulling her body down as if she was resting at the bottom of the ocean, she could only see the faintest of red. The clinking and clanking of her ragged bones stopped, the water was warm surrounding her with a warmth only a mother could give. She eyes opened fully this time, and there, in the distance her bright light.
