Indaba

According to South African myths and legend Indaba was first used to describe a gathering of Zulu elders for the discussion and resolution of important matters.

The word derives from the legend of an old Zulu king who, seeking to reunite the warring factions of his nation, invited all of the tribal elders to gather under the shade of an old tree for what he called an Indaba.

The purpose of the Indaba was to enable everyone to fully understand each other and resolve their differences peacefully. Those present shared food, discussed important matters, passed own folklore and held court.

This tradition still holds true in South Africa today.

The core principles are:

Treat others with respect, focus on issues of importance, take responsibility for your own behaviour, unchallenged information enables true understanding, inclusive communication and quality of decision are upper most and decisions are based on the good of the whole rather than the individual.

True vision emerges from the people.
