Mr. Gaiman, I’m a high school student who wants to become a writer and a journalist. I’ve been struggling with the former as I recently started sharing my work with family and friends, but was meet with critiques and doubt from my family (they felt my writing didn’t sound authentic). I know critics come cheap and are part of the trade. Do you have any advice on foraging ahead?

Your job as a high school student who wants to be a writer isn't to sound authentic, or to be published or even to be good enough to be publishable. Your job is to write. To finish things. To write more. And to read everything you can, read all sorts of things, written in all sorts of ways. To find out what you like and what you don't.

I don't think I wrote anything decent until I was about 23. And even then I was still sounding like other people because I didn't know what I sounded like.

Most shows I’ve seen that mention fan fiction readers/writers portray them as kinda oddball super-geeks with no lives or social skills.

So I wanna take a moment to appreciate the fact that in Parks & Recreation, the character who writes fan fiction is the intelligent, successful, and good-looking primary love interest of the main character.
