Breaking your fast
Last night over on instagram.com/fabsgetsfit I talked about breakfast.
If you would have asked me a few months ago what I had for breakfast I’d proudly say “A bowl of Oreo-Os, or maybe 2 bowls”. To understand why I was proud, you have to know that I put a lot of stock into the whole idea that to be healthy you had to eat breakfast because ‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ duh.
But here is where I became quite a bit naive. I thought that any breakfast was good enough and I could not be more wrong. Breakfast is what jump starts your day, it sets a precedent for the rest of your day. Eat a nice, unfulfilling bowl of sugary cereal? You’re going to feel s l u g g i s h allllll day long I promise you.
It was a ridiculous, foreign thought to me that breakfast was supposed to be the most nutritious, biggest meal of the day (I mean obviously steak is way bigger and better than a plate of eggs or oatmeal right?). I just didn’t get the concept that you get out of your body what you put into your body. And once I grasped that idea, my world was rocked.
My mornings no longer consist of a heaping bowl of sugary (albeit delicious) Oreo’O’s, or any cereal for that matter. It’s filled with all parts nutritious but absolutely DELICIOUS food. It took me a while to get there and my newfound love for breakfast is ever-evolving but here’s my biggest piece of advice *I’m no expert but I love food and this helps* add a little color to your breakfast. Whether that be fruit, avocado, eggs, a smoothie- color will make you happy and will make you want to eat good food!
My typical breakfast now always includes some oatmeal- nothing fancy- just old fashioned oats with 1/2 cup of milk and a dash (I mean the tiniest pinch of salt) and a smoothie- 8 frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup of non-fat plain greek yogurt, 1 whole banana, some plain original almond milk (more or less depending on if I want it to be more frozen or not!) and a drizzle of honey.
Sometimes, like today, I up my breakfast game.
The star of today’s breakfast show: Whipped Goat Cheese Toast topped with a {savory} few slice of avocado or some |sweet| strawberries, blackberries (and you guessed it) a drizzle of honey! Today I was feeling a little of both so I cut my toast in half and did just that!
If you have trouble finding whipped goat cheese like I did, have no fear. Grab 1 oz of softened goat cheese, 1/4 cup of non-fat plain greek yogurt, 1 TBS honey, 1/2 TBS extra virgin olive oil. Put this all in your small food processor and blend until whipped about a minute! Then spread it on your toast and top with your favorites!
Then I medium-boiled some eggs, made some oatmeal and chowed down.
Learning to love food starts with true, pure, nutritious meals and this is definitely a great place to start!
Water water water water (sang in the tune of Money money money monayyy)
Over Christmas I was talking to my sister in law (who is the textbook definition of healthy and a health nut (love you Ashley!)), about getting healthier and starting this year on a good note health wise.
She emphasized eating better was they absolute key to getting down to a healthier weight and said that believe it or not healthy eating starts with an adequate amount of water every day.
It wasn’t that I drank other things and not water all day- I didn’t drink too much soda, I didn’t drink too much coffee or juice or milk or tea. I just didn’t drink anything throughout the day. I was never thirsty but always hungry. Or so I thought.
The past week I have been wanting to really monitor my water intake and like all modern day techies, enlisted the help of my phone and an App to do it. I downloaded (and ended up purchasing the “My Water” App. Not only does it take my age, weight etc to determine how much water I should be drinking, but it sends me hourly reminders like “It’s time for another glass of water!” or my least favorite “healthy people drink water, so you should have another glass” nothing like a little app bullying to make you feel like you absolutely needed to have water.
It didn’t come easy though. The first 2 days I was sick and tired of water. Day 1 I only had 38 oz, Day 2 was better with 44.6 oz of water. I started too late in the day and felt like I was playing water catchup. But now, day 7 I’m SO happy that I met my water goal by 5 pm right before I clocked out, and am actually at 100 oz of water (and another glass of water is sitting right in front of me).
I can already tell the difference of drinking water consistently for a week- the downside is of course, I’ve already gone to the bathroom 8 times today to just pee. The upside though is my appetite. I am ALWAYS hungry, or at least I was always hungry ( or what I thought was hunger). But the last few days I’ve found myself full more quickly, and have realized that I’m way more thirsty than hungry which is great.
If you’ve read this far hi! I promise I’m not some water freak. But I really do recommend getting an app to monitor your water intake and to make sure you’re having enough water every day!
P.S. make sure to measure your cup of water! My first few days were off because I thought it was a 16 oz glass of water when it really was a 20 oz glass!
Better Sore Than Sorry 💪
2018 is my year.
I’ve been struggling with my weight for the greater part of the last 6 years. I’ve been miserable. I hate how I look. I hate how I feel. Exercising is painful to me- my knees heart, my back hurts, my chest hurts. But I don’t feel sorry for myself- I did this to myself. But I’ve realized that being healthy is more than exercising and starving myself. It’s treating myself. It’s not a luxury to eat well, or to exercise, it is a gift that I decide whether or not to give myself.
I started this blog YEARS ago. But was never quite committed. This year instead of agonizing over my meals, and stressing myself out, I’m going to do it right. Find the foods that nourish my body, walk to give myself more energy, drink more water to hydrate myself. I’m going to become the best version of myself this year and I want y’all to come on this journey with me. 2018 is the year I get my life back.
I’m baaaack
Because holy moly my wedding is in a little more than 8 months...
The past few months
I graduated college, moved back home and completely put being healthy on the back burner.
It wasn’t until today that Irealized that no matter what I try my ring won’t come off. So today is day 1.
For the rest of October I will not
Drink Alcohol
Drink Sodas
Eat Candy
