I want to respond to a kind recent anon who was curious about what asks I answer and what ones I tend not to, and I think theyâre right, I need to be explicit about those expectations instead of just hoping people get the hint. I am not going to respond to anons or messages that are overly and immediately personal. No, I donât have to tell you why that is. It was a tough thing to learn, but my boundaries are in place for a reason, and theyâre not going to change. Do not make me your therapist, or the object of your fixations, or the unwilling recipient of your complicated emotions, on anon or off of it.
I delight in responding to asks about my writing, about character analysis, and about story ideas. I also like to hear if my stories have been important to you, or helped you in some way, or shown you something about yourself or the world you hadnât seen before. If those are sent to me on anon, I usually donât respond to the latter category of messages out of a respect for your privacy, but they are deeply appreciated, and I am grateful. Sometimes I donât respond just because I am overwhelmed â I have a demanding job and a busy and challenging personal life, and sometimes I just canât get to fandom things, so Iâm sorry if your ask has languished. A lot of times itâs because thereâs just not the time I wish I had to devote to fun stuff.
I do have personal connections â some of them very close ones â that I have made through fandom, forged over the years. I like making fandom friends. If anyone wants to come off anon and be normal at me in my inbox, youâre welcome to do so. My personal connections have been forged slowly and over time, by careful mutual trust and respect, and I cherish those connections.
Iâm being explicit about this because I think some expectations of fannish interaction have shifted in recent years. So Iâm telling you mine now, and thanking you in advance for respecting them. Thank you for playing with me in this delightful sandbox of fandom, which has been and continues to be one of my lifeâs sweetest and deepest joys â as have all of you.
