Christopher Pease, "The Round House", 2007, oil on canvas, 123 x 213 cm. The painting is based on a work by Wallace Bickley. The etching and aquatint entitled "View of Fremantle, Western Australia (from the Canning Road)" was created in 1832 and depicted a panoramic view of Fremantle. I have taken this image and place the Wagul – a mythical serpent that created the Beela (rivers) as it moved across the land. The Wagul rises from the water like a giant sea monster ready to engulf passing ships. The foreground of the painting is overrun with white rabbits (a metaphor for the introduction of western beliefs, eroding and destroying indigenous way of life as well as the environment). On the street is a chain gang being escorted to the "Round House", an infamous jail that was the drop off point from which indigenous people were shipped to Wadjemup (Rottnest Island).

Faerie Sight
How to see faeries:
Wearing one’s coat inside out.
Wearing a posy of primroses.
A four leaf clover crushed and put into an ointment may give one sight of the Faeries as well as placing Faerie Ointment on the eyelids.
Bending over and looking backwards through your legs.
Looking through a Fir knot hole.
Looking through a loop made with a Rowan twig may cause Faerie sight.
Looking through a hag stone.
Meditating on a daily basis.
Averting one’s vision.
Dawn, moon, dusk, and midnight are the best times for faerie sightings.
Believe - faeries will most likely not show themselves to non-believers.
Have good intention - faeries can sense it.
Looking for a long time without blinking.

Clouties
British strips of cloth tied to trees near holy wells or sacred places. These cloths would be tied around a body part suffering from an ailment as the person walked to the sacred land. With the assistance of a charmer, the cloth would be tied to the tree and as it decayed, so would the ailment with it. Clearly, the cloth must be made of biodegradable material.
Liberation Spell
Thoughts of you still lingers in my head. Your face, your touch, your memory; they are like wisps of flame that kisses me. It does require a conscious effort to set my mind not to think of you. I want you to leave my thoughts for thinking of you only hurts my heart. Though here I am, secretly praying that you’ll see me that way you saw me before.
Forgive me, my gentle heart. This is only a phase. As you and I have agreed, nothing stays bad for too long. This too shall pass.
For now, I chant these words repeatedly, so help me in my healing:
“From your memory, I set myself free. Leave my thoughts, Leave me be.”
Hunters look gloatingly at their prize, the testicles of the beavers they are hunting. The top beaver looks resentful of his loss, while the one at the bottom prepares to make the same sacrifice.

Traditional Samhain Divination Practices
Hanging Sheets
In Scotland, young women would hang wet sheets in front of a fire on Samhain because it was said that they would be able to see the image of their future husband.
Bobbing For Apples
When bobbing for apples, two different factors were said to predict the participant’s love life. First, how many tries it took to catch and apple, and second how crisp the apple was.
The fewer tries it took to catch an apple, the sooner the participant would fall in love or marry.
If the apple was crisp or crunchy the participant would have a happy marriage. If the apple was soft or rotten there would be heartache and misery. (x)
Peel The Apple
The participants would peel one long strip of skin from an apple and throw the peel over their shoulder. Whatever letter the peel resembled was said to be the first letter of their soulmate’s name. (x)
Spin The Apple
Many strings would be tied to the stem of an apple and each string held by a participant as they walked around a fire (with the apple directly above the fire). The first string to break would indicate the person who will marry first. (x)
Hazelnut Fortune
Couples would throw hazelnuts into a fire. If the hazelnuts split apart the relationship will be tumultuous and rocky. If the hazelnuts caught fire and burned without splitting the relationship will be strong, happy, and long. (x)
Barmbrack Cake
A barmbrack cake is an Irish tea cake made with raising and spices and filled with symbolic objects. These objects include:
A coin to predict prosperity
A key to signify a journey
A thimble for spinsterhood
A button to indicate a man will remain a bachelor
A scrap of cloth to predict poverty
The cake would be cut and served and the object in the recipient’s piece would serve as a prediction of their future. The person who cut the cake was traditionally the host or the designated “Mother or Dame Halloween”. (x)
Saucers
Four saucers would be occupied by water, clay, salt, and a ring, respectively. The participant would be blindfolded and have to choose a saucer at random. The contents of the chosen saucer would predict an aspect of the participant’s future: (x)
Water: A long journey
Clay: An early grave
Salt: Prosperity
Ring: Marriage
The Chest
“Perhaps the most involved divination game is The Chest. This is played at the stroke of midnight. All the girls are gathered together in a dark room. Mother or Dame Halloween lights a candle and each girl is given an unlit candle. One by one they light their candle from Mother Halloween’s and they are told to follow her leader. As she says this a side door is opened revealing a small child dressed in a fancy costume and mask. The child approaches the girl, bows, and then leads the way out of the room to a distant part of the house where there is a closed door.
The child tells her that she must enter and take a numbered box from a chest of drawers in the room but not open it. She must continue in silence and close the door behind her on the way in and out. After she has retrieved the box and if she has luck, on the way back to the door she will see the shadow of her future husband walking beside her.
Once the girls are back to the party they may open their boxes, inside are small presents or party favors.
The key to this game is in preparation. The room must be prepared in advance, cleared of everything but the chest of drawers, and it must be completely dark. The door to this room should remain closed and no guests allowed to enter. During the evening the hosts would plant ideas as to what dark, ominous, or even dangerous things are inside the room so as to scare the young girls and test their bravery when they entered.” (x)
The Serpent’s Lock
The seal of protection, privacy and invisibility – can be stamped or marked on documents to protect them from prying eyes, lest the witches’ venom befall them. Can also be used to hide oneself from that which walks on the astral plane.
The Serpent’s Key
Used to see that which is hidden – aiding in the perception of the Unseen: be it spirits, deities, omens, etc. It might also be employed to find lost or hidden objects, and expose secret truths people are hiding. In addition, it can also be used to reverse the Serpent’s Lock if the key is added.
