THE TRUTH IS THAT THE TRUTH IS COMPLICATED, LIKE EVERYTHING. by now he’s pretty much fucking given up on the idea of an easy answer, at least when it comes to himself. but this is different. this is a question with levels of answers that change, and even he isn’t really sure where to start. some of it’s shitty. some of it’s just depressing. and some of it’s not even just about corporations. it’s about the ultra-wealthy in general. it’s about what they do, and how they exploit people, and how fucking far they’re willing to go. ❝ i guess, ❞ he says stiffly, not really looking at her. ❝ it can be both, you know. personal and broad. ❞ that’s not a lie. that’s very true. he keeps typing for a moment, scrolling back up to check a few more parameters and then back down again. the work doesn’t stop just because they’re having a conversation like this, one that makes something itch uncomfortably at the back of his brain.

does kenzi know? no. she’s just asking questions because maybe she knows what he’s talking about well enough to see through it.

elliot’s anger defines him in a way that kenzi’s seen before, she didn’t know what it was then or how it could shape things. oh, but it could change everything. especially with a skill like his. ❛ it can be, ❜ she agrees with him that it’s always both to some degree but the anger that’s personalized carries itself different than just anger at a concept. she idly thumbs through her phone, she’s coming up with a backstory for this character because it’s always easier once you’ve got it. this may even be the best con she’s ever done. ❛ sure. ❜ kenzi is willing to let sleeping dogs lie, but her tone denotes a significant suspension of belief. talking to elliot is like talking to someone wearing a mask not on halloween. there’s danger there but it hasn’t presented itself just yet, you can tell they’re off but still functioning. ❛ ------ so what comes after? ❜
