I think i could be trusted with magic, the worst thing i could do is like give a shark legs so they can go for a walk or maybe do a silly little dance or something, and maybe also turn somebody into a shrub when they insult my friends or forget their manners... but mostly the shark thing.
you are not immune to inventing an arbitrary set of rules that only you have to adhere to
but what if i like the arbitrary rules?
What if a Fae and a Vampire were sharing space in a castle because the Fae found the door unlocked or a window unbarred, and now due to the rules of hospitality they have to go through a convoluted social song and dance to get what they want?
Like, the Fae want something to be given to them or to take something, but the Vampire is a very powerful undead and so not an idiot. The Vampire meanwhile can't take blood from the Fae without permission because the consequences of stealing from the Fae, but also can't kick their "guest" out without being the bare minimum amount of courteous...
It intrigues me.
I wish to share some of the wisdom my Dad has imparted on me, because it can be helpful sometimes and also it has this "aggressive self respect" undertone half the time, which I hard to describe...
For instance:
"Being weird is good. The alternative isn't being normal, it's being boring. If nobody has told them that, why not remind them?"
A piece of advice given to my very undiagnosed and very neurodiverse young self for being a bit odd and a nerd. This lead to the wonderful line:
"Are you weird too? Or are you boring?"
Which was asked of one of my sisters friends when he commented that we all seemed weird, naturally the teenager staring down an old school metal head with a goofy grin on his face as he danced in the kitchen agreed to being weird.
Moral of the story is not even close to implied, but:
If they're gonna insult you with the nature of their questions or labels, return the favor, it's only fair. You may be odd, but they're dull. And it's far more fun to be unapologetically yourself where you can than to have a personality made of damp cardboard because you lack the means or the spine to do otherwise.
I think the reason I dislike generative AI (aside from all the usual reasons), the personal part of it, is that I don't often make things because I want the outcome. I make things because of the compulsive need to be making things.
The kind of a creative person is like a shark that way, to make is to move.
To not make is to be still, to be still is to be stagnant is to die, and thus, we instead move.
I don't write because I want people to pay for my story, I write because the idea in my head has driven me mad and must be let out, I cannot survive the insomnia it brings as my thoughts are stuck to and consumed by the process, I spend a sleepless night typing until the story is done, and then I rest.
Until the next idea comes along, and my mind contorts itself in the effort to amalgamate inspirations upon the idea until the project can be made, and then the process starts anew.
AI won't scratch the itch and grant me sleep, let me be a half mad poet and a mediocre artist, the process of making is the remedy, the end product is just extra.
Something about deadnames makes me think the Fae could do something necromancy adjacent with them...
Either naming ghosts they conjure to make them stronger, or turning the old names into speakable curses that do something fun, like rurn you into a toad of you speak it, or something.
I dunno, a power system that emphasises rhe importance of names clashing with a society where chosen names are more common than given names speaks to me as something with potential.
"Could I get your name?" is old hat, tired, folks see that coming a mile away!
But if I hold a clipboard and say "could I have a moment of your time?" Then I can slowly make myself immortal but taking a day at a time!
It's foolproof, nobody would suspect a thing!
Having a migraine while being a perpetually sarcastic menace is an interesting experience.
Here I am, with the phantom sensation of somebody driving a sharp object through my eye socket, while a dull and repeating pain drums away at my head, and while the pain slowly fades and the migraine subsides, I feel the need to turn to face non-existent ghosts who are responsible for the sensation of a lobotomy that haunts me and ask: "is it in yet?" With something akin to hate behind my words.
But alas, it's just a migraine, and there is nobody to hate for it but the weather.
Having prophetic dreams is great and all, but then you have a dream that feels prophetic about your own death, and only realise years latter that dream logic struggles with the boundary between literal and metaphorical. Like, sure, you had a dream where you lay dying somewhere, while somebody you didn't recognise at the time walked away.
Both were you, the old you died and the different you walked off into the future, but you didn't know who that was then, and you don't consider yourself the other person now. That version of you died, and now you fulfill the prophecy you dreamed up.
Still, bet it scares the hell out of you the first time.
