the  guards  don’t  seem  to  like  that.  his  flippant  attitude  after  just  taking  one  of  them  down.  though  to  call  them  guards  is  a  lie.  they’re  criminals:  thugs,  thieves,  ex.  soldiers,  dressed  in  audaron  armour,  tossing  helmets  between  themselves  and  defacing  the  coat  of  arms  upon  their  shields,  making  a  mockery  of  the  kingdom.  or  they  had  been,  ‘til  gordon’s  appearance.  they  rush  in  a  bustle  to  surround  him,  to  prevent  that  little  stroll  he  is  planning  on  taking. 

it’s  difficult;  but  not  entirely  hopeless.  not  ‘til  he  see’s  the  dark  fairy’s  horns  raise  above  the  man.  darkness  follows  her  as  an  aura,  dampening  the  heart      ------      and  at  her  side,  her  daughter.  his  one - time  friend,  or...  perhaps  they  could  have  been.  but  now  she  stands,  shoulders  back,  arms  folded  lightly,  at  the  side  of  the  woman  who  has  imprisoned  most  of  the  palace  and  sent  her  dark  magic  through  the  kingdom.

❛      and  who  do  we  have  here?  is  he  one  of  your  little...  friends,  pumpkin?      ❜      maleficent  asks,  the  promise  of  mischief  on  her  lips.  the  words  make  mal’s  heart  sink,  and  it’s  a  struggle  to  keep  her  face  a  mask  as  she  peers  through  the  crowd  towards  gordon.  she  knows  what  she  has  to  do.  but  it’s  not  pleasant.  mal  swallows,  finding  only  a  dry,  empty  throat.  

what  the  hell  is  he  playing  at?  she  has  to  get  him  out  of  their  sights.

❛      he’s  a  nobody      ------      just  some  sidekick’s  kid.      ❜

it  is  the  lowest  blow  she  can  think  of.  it’s  betrayal  in  sweet,  perfumed  words  from  a  pixie’s  tongue.  he  trusts  her  with  his  fears;  his  frustrations;  his  cage.  but  she  hopes  it  spurs  enough  pain  in  him  to  make  him  turn  and  run.  it  hurts;  like  a  hand  grasping  her  heart  and  dragging  it  down.  but  she  puts  on  the  mask...  after  all      ------      she  can  only  apologise  to  him  later  if  he’s  still  alive. 

mal’s  chin  tilts  upwards,  eyelids  heavy  with  manufactured  boredom.  she  gives  a  wave  of  her  hand  towards  gordon.  somehow  she  hopes  he  can  read  her  eyes;  but  there’s  nothing  she  can  give  him  in  the  way  of  hope.  her  mother  knows  her  too  well  for  that.  she  could  recognise  any  slip. 

just  run,  idiot,  mal  silently  begs      ------      and  don’t  show  them  you  have  magic.

❛      making  them  kneel  is  easy.  it’s  keeping  them  on  their  knees  that’s  hard.      ❜      the  words  are  spoken  with  little  passion.  they  aren’t  her  words;  but  something  she’s  heard  her  mother  say.  maleficent  inspires  fear;  less  so  love.  save  from  a  fair  few.  mal  has  no  lack  of  love   ------   too  much  love,  actually.  but  it  all  feels  hollow;  like  the  harsh  shine  of  UV  light  and  no  gentle  kiss  of  natural  summer.  camera  flashes,  tours,  press,  rumours.  she’s  only  going  to  be  a  queen  because  ben  wants  her  to  marry  him;  not  because  they  chose  her. 

but  she  could  make  them  choose  her.  that  is  the  awkward  thing.  she  could  be  a  villain  if  she  has  too.  take  the  crown,  not  accept  it.  but  in  her  heart  she  isn’t  sure  she  wants  it.  it  would  only  be  to  save  them,  to  make  the  right  alliances,  to  keep  out  her  angry  relatives.  the  young  girl  swallows,  silently,  and  slowly  peers  up  towards  him.  he  is  one  of  those  alliances.  but  ben  won’t  take  it.
