The Self-Respect marriage vow bound man and woman in a relationship of equivalence as well as equality, such that neither could hope to enjoy or practice rights denied to the other. The marriage granted equal rights to the wife in respect of property as well and such rights were sometimes pronounced in the marriage vows themselves, as was the right to separation and divorce. Periyar was at all times insistent that women understand and take advantage of the promises of liberation inherent in Self-Respect unions and establish their equality with men. The right to leave an abusive marriage, the right to divorce, the right to fall in love, yet again, the right to have or not have children: women were exhorted to avail of all these rights and claim the dignity and pride due to them. SUMMARY : you were finding college hectic, having to work a part time job as well as two courses. while at work, you meet kim seokjin, your college senior who seems to have a small liking to you.
You enjoyed college, you really did. Or at least that’s what you tried to tell yourself.
Of course, it was better than high school — but high school had set pretty low standards, so anything was really better than high school.
Everyone constantly talked about how college was a great experience, no nagging professors, no idiotic students, everyone was mature.
It was all a lie. College was hectic for you. Juggling a part time job and two courses was tiring to say the least. You were from a middle class family, meaning your family had enough money to get by, but you didn’t want to trouble your parents with your expensive tuition fees. So you had come to an agreement with them, they paid half of your fees and you found a job to try to make the other half. You had every idea of repaying them, just once you managed to earn enough money to pay for your tuition, food, rent, travel expenses, and textbooks.
Currently you were walking down the street, just having finished a class. Trying and failing to go through what your professor taught you in class, you simply put your headphones on, connect them to your phone and put on your playlist.
Smiling when the song that appeared was your favourite, you were instantly put in a good mood. Taking a deep breath in, you pushed the door open into the cafe you worked at and were immediately greeted with the smell of fresh coffee beans.
Pushing open the door that said, ‘Employee only’, you put your bag on the shelf reserved for you, grabbed an apron. Washing your hands, you went out, exchanging greetings with your coworker, whom you were familiar with. You often took the shift after her, and eventually you had become friends.
Today the crowd was pretty small, since most classes only let out in around an hour, that’s when you had to expect a large amount of sleepy, hungry young people deprived of coffee.
You mostly stood around, cleaning, organising. That is until you heard the door open. Wiping your hands on your apron, you turned around and smiled at the customer, barely stopping your eyes from widening.
The person in front of you was an extremely handsome man and he looked around your age, give or take a couple of years. He was handsome, to be precise he looked like a model. Needless to say, you were pretty sure you might have gawked at him for a couple of seconds before realising what you were doing. Embarrassed, you asked him his order, writing it down and getting the payment from him.
“Aren’t you going to ask my name?” you looked up, startled. Everything had been pretty silent, so you weren’t expecting much noise, so you were confused. “You know, to write it on the cup.
At your further confusion, he smiled and answered. “So you don’t give my coffee to anyone else?”
You looked around, surprised. “There’s no one else here. I think I can remember that you’re the one who ordered the elaborate coffee.”
“So you have no interest in knowing my name?”
Truthfully, if this were any other guy you’d want to know his name, but understanding that he was trying to flirt, you disagreed and told him you didn’t want to know his name. The thing was, you already knew his name. He was none other than Kim Seokjin, your college senior by two years.
He was well known around the campus as the handsome rich guy, who was cocky about his looks. Seokjin, or Jin as his friends referred to him, was a nice person — or at least that was what you’d heard from around the campus. He was majoring in the same thing as you, and most of your professors spoke highly. He was also said to be a perfect gentleman, and to be great in bed. This piece of information you’d acquired through your friend, who’d found Seokjin to be cute.
That wasn’t to say you didn’t have a crush on him. You didn’t — you just found him cute. The two of you had barely spoken, apart from a few words exchanged during the occasional times you sat across each other in the library, or went to the same party.
While you made Seokjin’s order, he stood near the windows, looking outside. Nervous when he realised his friends were coming up the street. His friends were well aware of the little crush he had on you, and if they saw you two together, the teasing would never end.
You called out to him that his coffee was ready, and as his fingers grazed yours as he grabbed his coffee, a jolt of electricity passed.
Seokjin looked up at you, looking straight into your eyes. Your heartbeat sped up as he smiled at you.
