yuuri on ice was the first anime i watched aside from like,, dubbed pokemon as a kid and one (1) ghibli movie my dad took me to see in theatres. it was also among the first queer-centered stories i experienced as a newly-out-yet-still-in-the-closet queer person.

it has always held a very special place in my heart. i watched it around 2019/2020 if memory serves me right. i didn't get to experience the episodes airing weekly, the fandom was in hibernation, but i had a movie to look forward to !

i was so fucking excited to get to be part of this fandom as new content was being released. that was 4-5 years ago now. the teaser trailer kept my hopes up ever since it dropped in 2021. despite the radio silence i didn't want to believe it would never come, but here we are. in the end i guess i get to be part of this fandom's reawakening, but in the worst way possible.

Katara lost her mom. It tore her world apart. Being told her whole life it was scary, but they'd be okay if they were together. She tried to become what Kya left behind, a dependable maternal figure who holds the whole world together. But if, when the raid happened, had she not been 8 years old, and stronger and braver, she could've fought and it might've ended differently. Katara grows, and learns how to fight, and faces her deepest emotions. She goes to war, she rallies crowds, she does things because she feels like they're the right thing, just like her dad.

And Sokka lost his mom too, and his dad, and his sister and his tribe. Kya wasn't the end for Sokka, she was the beginning. He tried to become what Hakoda needed, a fearless warrior, who could take on a whole ship single handed. But none of this would have to happen if the world wasn't so cruel to wage war for 100 years. Sokka grows, unlearns hateful lessons, overcomes loss after loss with grace. He goes to war, he keeps his kids safe, he goofs off and plans meticulously to make sure everyone's alright, just like his mom.

Do you ever think they'll look at the other one day and go "oh, oh, it's you. You saved me"

Victor had at least three reasons for giving Eros to Yuuri and Agape to Yurio, I think, and one of them is "don't make the same teenage mistakes I did". source, he was fifteen when he first wore the Lilac Fairy / Eros costume, yes? which I understand he based the design on bondage and lingerie? I'm betting he has regrets about the sort of attention that got him and he'd like Yurio to not do that, same as with jumping quads in Juniors

(and then of course Yurio comes up with the Welcome to the Madness choreography literally overnight, aided and abetted in that and in costuming by a slightly older teenager)

also, strong possibility that the season Victor skated Lilac Fairy is the season he started getting that playboy reputation, see also his remarks to both Yuris about not being able to choose one's own image
