My work boots are the most expensive shoes Iâve ever owned.
Also the most comfortable. I chose them after trying on several different brands and comparing lifespan vs usage vs comfort - I needed them for a physically demanding job, not the weekend hiking trails. I could have easily chosen cheaper boots that would have lasted long enough to be worth their low price, but I know the Sam Vimes Boot Theory and knew weaker, less comfortable boots would make my life harder in the long run.
So when the outside edge of the heel started wearing down after three years of heavy use I went to the shop I got them from and said âhey this is a common problem for me with how I walk but now itâs affecting my ankles and knees and I donât wanna have to buy a new pair, is there a way to fix this?â
The salesman at this very fancy upscale boot store said âoh yeah, thereâs a shoe repair place that can give you some heel guards - itâll keep the rubber from wearing out.â
So at 8am this morning right after my 9hr shift ends I went to the shoe repair shop and it is the most hole-in-the-wall, is-this-a-real-business-or-a-mafia-front, am-I-gonna-get-shot tiny cinder block cube Iâve ever seen in my life. I grew up plenty poor and love me a good hole-in-the-wall business, but going from upscale store to this cash-only repair shop gave me whiplash. Wasnât expecting this when a guy who wears three piece suits to sell boots said itâs the best place to go.
The skinny kid behind the counter looks somehow 16 and 25 at the same time, but when I tell him this place was recommended he smiles and says to hand over my boots. I hand him the vaguely warm foot-smelling boots, and stand in my socks in the 3â square entryway surrounded by every color leather polish you could buy and watch as he turns my boots around in his hands, sizes up a crescent moon bits of plastic, and unceremoniously hammers tiny nails through them before handing them back.
The heels are perfectly level again. I can walk without almost rolling my ankles. They donât clack loudly on the pavement or feel different. This is gonna fix my knee pain. It cost $10.
This kid had every tool he needed within arms reach, worked fast and smoothly, I was in and out the door in less than 8 minutes, and it only cost $10.
I didnât think anything could cost only $10 anymore. Iâm so used to hyperinflation prices I was spiritually thrown back to the 1400âs visiting the cobbler in town square. This kid might have been that cobbler and just decided to never die.
Iâm still reeling from the whiplash, and gobsmacked at the price, and thrilled I didnât have to go buy new, worse work boots (cuz I donât have that kind of money for a second pair, Iâm expecting these ones to last a decade) and it feels like I just experienced one of the rare little chunks of magic that floats around our world.

Well, someone's messed with the timeline!
quirky fourth wall breaking character but theyre just fucking. wrong about the medium theyre in. they keep making references to cinematic techniques and directorial styles and the other fourth wall breaking character is like "dumbass we're in a fucking comic book" and they are in a video game.
Well currently theyâre in a tumblr post but I see your point
we're actually in a youtube video if this turns out to be funny enough
idk im really tired of 15-17 year olds who have never interacted with the gay community irl and spend too much time on tiktok trying to act like the authority on all that is lgbt+Â
mean this in the kindest possible way. if you are too young and unsafe to go to your gay community center or pride hereâs some ways you can connect to gay history.

My elderly father started talking about how frustrating he finds âthe pronouns thingâ and I was like. Oh no. He had such a good stand on this, heâs been they/them-ing his cishet siblings for godâs sake! Is he regressing?? And he was talking about how difficult it is to remember, and how onerous it feels to expect strangers to keep track of it, and Iâm like oh no oh no.
Then he says, âI mean, the problem isnât the gender thing. The problem is four words: she, her, he, and him. We got rid of stewardess and turned it into flight attendant. It doesnât matter if the flight attendant is a man or woman, so we got rid of it. We just need to get rid of those. I donât need to know.â
âYou donât need to know⌠peopleâs gender?â
âNo. I donât care, I donât need to know, and I donât want to remember it.â
So we can relax. Itâs just a continuation of his crusade to they/them the world. He doesnât want to remember anyoneâs gender. Heâs abolishing the genders.

Why is it revolutionary to know a person?
Someone I have worked with for a decade is retiring. He and I have been close- weâve traveled together, shared meals, talked about our families and our hobbies, spent time. We text. We talk. Weâve know each other for ten years.
I went looking for a gift for his retirement, and found a watch that relates to the specific kind of car that he works on as a hobby. I bought it, and then invited people to chip in if they wanted.
My coworkers are acting like this is miraculous?
âHow did you think of that?â I knew he had a hobby and I googled it?
âHow did you know he works on those?â I listen to people when they talk.
âHow do you always buy such good gifts?â I listen when people talk to me. Most people are dying to talk about their interests. You just have to give them an in. If your memory sucks, start a note in your phone and write down what people express interest in. Look at it every so often before you hang out to refresh your memory.
âI never would have thought of that.â I didnât, really. I just spent 20 minutes looking at eBay and Etsy and a few subreddits. Itâs easy if you try.
Honestly, if you want to make connections with people, express interest in their passions. Itâs easy if you practice it.
